    It always amazes me that so many people don't do this! Relishes like this only get better on the shelf, and are a delight to senses! This version looks especially yummy! Right now, I'm in an area where many of the locals actually garden, can and preserve, but a great many of the new residents and young people don't have a clue, or just can't be bothered. When things are tight, they'll wish to God they learned these skills. I have a family next door that are going through some hard times, so I've been helping them a little. Mom and Dad have two small children, and his mother lives with them. None of them have a clue how to preserve anything, but they are now asking questions about how to make some of the things I've shared with them. Let's hope at least someone there decides to learn and do!

      I was just thinking about how I.m glad my daughter has learned how to can and prezerve garden food. I made 11 jars of zucchini relish and 9 jars of dilly beans today.

    We did something similar that we called Rummage Relish as we would rummage thru the garden & find what was left.

    Reminds me of my Grandma's End of Garden Relish. Grandma was a thrifty farmer's wife and pickled anything that didn't go into a specific recipe.

    The Piccalilli that we can in the South is usually with green tomatoes and cabbage. Sometimes cauliflower. It is a southern tradition of putting food by, generational thing as well as being really good to eat. We eat it with everything, beans and cornbread, meats, sandwiches, you name it. Take care, God Bless!

    Pearl onions are not necessary. The whole point of Piccalilli orginally was to use up vegetables give them some different flavours to store. There are so many different recipes here in the UK because of that.

    I think the last time I had Piccalilli I was just a kid. My mom would make it. I also remember her putting melted wax on top of her jams and jellies to seal them.

    I've never heard of this before but it sounds like something I would like. I love malt vinegar ... now I have a new recipe to do with extra zucchini, squash & cauliflower. I love to try new condiments .... I hope if you think about it when you open a jar of it, you do a review on it on what it taste like & what you put it on. Thanks for sharing ... I always learn something new here!!!

    Hello, i don't have any clear gel, can I use arrowroot powder or KNOX unflavored gelatin? That is all I have and need to start right away and can't order anything in time. I am panicking now. How much do you think and how do I add it to it. Is there a certain way so it doesn't clump up and be chunky. Please very much if you could help me with this problem that would be so heavenly and gracious. I have all the vegetables all ready to start the project just need to cut things up. I have looked at recipes non stop for several full days and any of them that wants to thicken and can the products have all used cornstarch. But I have heard other years not to so that. You need arrowroot powder or clear gel, but I have memory problems and forget which way to use either of those products correctly. Please I need you expertise I trust and believe in your teachings. Thank you, thank you so very much of your support and guidance and appreciate all your teachings and knowledge and advice in all your videos. I do learn alot from you. Love you channel. ❤❤ 🎉 🎉 😊😊😊 God Bless You And Your Family, And Keep Everyone Safe And Healthy!!!!!🙏🏻🙏🏻🇺🇸✌🤘🤙👍👌💖 Sincerely Sandy, From Wisconsin Rapids , Wisconsin USA

      It's better to leave it out if you don't have any at all. Just make it like a regular relish without any thickener.

    I've been wondering for some time if you could make pickles from zucchini rather than cucumbers. It looks like it just might work.

      Yes, and yellow squash too.
      I bought Bread & Butter pickles, yellow squash sliced like coins and stacked in the jar. So pretty. Can do the same with zucchini.
      On my shelf, I have Bread & Butter pickle salad: cauliflower, carrot, onion, cuke, radish. 😊

    I’ve never pickled anything. What type of pickling spices can you recommend that I purchase? Thank you very much. I really enjoyed this video. By the way, I’m asking this question while you’re adding the pickling spice. Maybe you tell us the name of the spice at the end of the video if so, apologies.

    • @OurHalfAcreHomestead
      @OurHalfAcreHomestead  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is just a generic blend. " Pickling Spice" you can find it in the spice isle.

    🤔I wish you could give okra a try growing in your garden especially if you are having hotter days like we are...106°F for the next 10 days🤯 (it's not a raised garden bed veggie but would grow great in the ground...my 1st year gardening mine were 8ft tall!!! I had to pull the stalk at an angle to cut the okra pods starting mid stalk and just move hanging onto it as you walk away from the spot in the ground 😂😂😂it kinda catapults and sways if you lose your grip and/or need to let it go😂😂😂)🤗

    • @rennsea5865
      @rennsea5865 ปีที่แล้ว

      I grow okra in raised beds at work. As long as you "top off" the soil before and after growing, you're good to go!

    • @OurHalfAcreHomestead
      @OurHalfAcreHomestead  ปีที่แล้ว

    Bev… my hubs keeps talking about a piccalilli that his moms friend used to make when he was little. He’s 70yrs young now! He said it had fresh mustard greens, onions, cabbage, maybe green tomatoes, carrots(shredded), broccoli & cauliflower as best as he can remember. more like a end of garden type thing from what I’m gathering. I’ve found every “sweet” piccalilli recipe ever I think! This was dilled not sweet! Do you happen to have any clue what he’s talking about?! Do you think a body could just use a dill pickles recipe instead of a sweet 1? Thanks so much!
    PS… his mother is 96 yrs young but can’t remember the correct recipe either. Thanks again
