ARD-Logo »Eins« recreated on Quantel Paintbox

- in this video i recreated the ARD-trademark (first german television). it was originally used from 1984 till 2003. in the early days it was produced in 3D and rendered in california. i used my 30 years old Quantel Paintbox to recreate this 3D-logo.

I remember this and how expensive it was to make. Everyone I knew talked about the new ARD logotype.
yes, the logo was created by stephan boeder and than it was animated in the us by cranston/csuri.
Later installments of the logo, as well as of the Tagesschau news intro, have been designed and animated on the Commodore Amiga, with a VideoToaster card. It was much more affordable.

Holy crap! You made a logo for a German public broadcaster (which has split into 9 broadcasters across Germany)... on the now-discontinued device known as the Quantel Paintbox? How on Earth was that possible?
yes - correct! but its only a recreation on the paintbox. originally it was done in 3d from a company in california.
@@studiopaeper2877 That "3D company in California" thing might be Cranston/Csuri Productions. BTW, Cranston/Csuri weren't based in California. They were based in Columbus, Ohio.

@@studiopaeper2877 Of course. The storyboarding for an ID for ARD with the broadcasters at the time, by Hans Bacher, the designer of the 1984 logo, which was sent to Cranston/Csuri, in order to animate it ENTIRELY in CGI, in the NTSC frame-rate of 29.97 FPS, despite the fact that PAL, uses 25 FPS.

Vielleicht haben die das damals auch schon damit gemacht oder ab wann gabs das Quantelsystem?
also quantel ist mit effektgeräten seit den 70ern auf dem markt. ab 81 kam die erste paintbox. ich weiß dass die ard-EINS in amerika in 3d gerendert wurde und dann mit sicherheit bei uns in deutschland weiterverwendet und modifiziert, man sah oft intros, die die vorgerenderte EINS in 2d weiter genutzt hatten und das mit sicherheit auch in quantel-systemen.
@@studiopaeper2877 In den 90ern konnte die ARD einen Commodore Amiga verwenden, der selbst auch in Westdeutschland hergestellt wurde, und dann nur mit VideoToaster ausgestattet werden musste. Dem VideoToaster beigefügt war LightWave 3D als 3D-Animationsprogramm. An den Reflektionen hat der Rechner sicher trotzdem eine Weile gearbeitet.

Did the 80s Paintboxes allow a still image (a captured video frame or photo) to be made into a lower third banner background that text could be written on top of and then repeated throughout a video?
I’m trying to recreate 1987-era graphics and can’t find any examples of 80s designers doing this, so does that mean it couldn't because of some technical limitation.
I know what I describe was being done with the 90s generations, but I never see it done with the 80s generations.
hi, i try! ;) i'hope i understand it right. even with the first generation of paintbox from 1981 there was an option to move or place a cutout over a live video-input. so you could use the paintbox as a little »video-mixer« or type-generator - with limitations. is that helpful for you?
@@studiopaeper2877 Hi, thank you, but was it possible in the 80s generations to layer text on top of the cutout (when the cutout was made from a photo or video still image)?
Because I can't find *any* examples of it being done until the 1990s.

Is the Paintbox only capable of SD resolution? Or did they ever get to HD?
the normal paintbox is only capable of SD-resolution, so you need to create elements as big as possible (sometimes rotated by 90° to use maximal screenspace). quantel produced also paintboxes for print, called graphic-paintbox or printbox with higher resolution and CMYK colorspace i think. and they produced a few HD-paintbox for the japanese market.

@@studiopaeper2877 I’m in the US. Been in the video business a long time. I was into the Amiga pretty heavily but always hoped to have a chance to use the Quantel stuff, but it never happened. These days Im just using Mac M1 and DaVinci Resolve and enjoying it a lot. A friend of yours posted links to one of your videos on Facebook. Do you do much freelance? I love your work

@@studiopaeper2877 Die sind natürlich auch super. Probier das ruhig mal! :) Man kommt nur nicht an gute Versioen ran wo der Ton ordentlich ist. Sky sendete schon seit Anfang 90 in feinstem Stereo! :)
@@magermunson ich glaube ich hatte eine gute version bei TVARC oder wie das heisst. weiss aber nicht, wie da der ton war, bild war auf jeden fall super.
