  • Thanks to mark from DextersTecLab for restoring my Quantel HAL for me. now i can build an intro for his youtube channel on it. the music credits for the intro also go to him. the Quantel HAL was used for tv-design and promos in the 1990s.

    I ran various Qantel hardware for a number of years back in the day. Cutting edge stuff at the time. The menus bring back fond memories

      @@studiopaeper2877 No I am only an admirer of the tech and the artist who use it. I knew some people in the broadcast industry who talked about Quantel hardware with reverence. Here in California I saw two for sale in the early 2000's on Craigslist LA for really cheap. I regret not getting one. I'm sure they went to scrap heap.

    After the graphics were done on devices like this, they needed to be transfered over to either a Betacam SP videotape, or a Digital Betacam videotape, in order to get their graphics done on things like this to air on television.

      yes, i also have a DVW500 connected to it. so i can inport and export footage into HAL. i also use a direct sdi-cable to my mac with blackmagic-card to record from HAL.

      @@studiopaeper2877 Oh. A Sony DVW-A500P Digital Betacam recorder that is connected to the Quantel Paintbox. I get it.

    I have some ideas to replicate similar graphics on old hardware, but never had experience working with Quantels... We'll try it on the Amiga) Thanks for inspiration!

      @@studiopaeper2877 Video toaster is an old dream, but now I have only have A1200 but with Scala and a Deluxe Paint, this should be enough. There is also a Snell&Wilcocs Magic Dave video mixer for special effects. Heh... good old days )

    So cool!!! Glad you can keep this beautiful old piece of lost tech going!!! It's not obsolete if you can still do awesome stuff with it! Is it UNIX under the hood?

    • @studiopaeper2877
      @studiopaeper2877  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      thanks, that you like it. and yes, i like the system very much! its his own software, i think there is nothing like UNIX in it. but good question. we should ask @dexterstechlab?

    • @DextersTechLab
      @DextersTechLab ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Under the hood is it Quantel's own multi-tasking operating system written in the late 1980s it lasted through until the 2000s. It was used in all their products from Paintbox to Henry!

    • @wernervanpeppen4873
      @wernervanpeppen4873 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It used to run it's own operating system designed by Quantel called Peanut. It's not really separate from the graphics software as such as in a modern context

    Amazing video! just to understand more, Each of the frames with thumbnail (the ones with name DTL-) is like a scene with all the elements or like a layer? Another doubt. Can you Undo?

    • @studiopaeper2877
      @studiopaeper2877  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      hey, thanks! good questions. you can only save single clips, so each thumbnail is a clip and not a pack with layers. you need to save every layer and keyframes separat to rebuild your composition. thats why you need to organize your work good. also with undo, you have only one undo step and not in all menus! ;)

    It looks like HAL is more powerful than the current After Effects

      its limited in disk-space and resolution - but i got better tools to touch an image. its like having a bit of photoshop , illustrator, premiere and after effects in one tool.

    So cool! It always amuses me when I try to explain 'hicons' to Photoshop babies >D / Also you said DVE. Do you have a separate DVE or did you mean the built in Hal one.

    What is the purpose of the smaller video monitor (under the waveform viewer) in addition to the main monitor?

    • @studiopaeper2877
      @studiopaeper2877  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      good question, this monitor is set to 16by9, so i can easily check how the output intro looks in 16by9. i dont like to set the main monitor to 16by9, because the HAL-menu look wired then! ;)
