    I am VERY sorry about uploading a day late. The power flickered off for half a second during the render and my computer shut off, the render crashed/corrupted and I had to start again. Since my Rig is a hamster fueled potato this took another 7 hours of rendering which meant it was already 11pm by the time the video was ready to go and i was in bed.
    Also SCI has a discord now i guess?:

      Amun Ra is about 110 meters high (long). Look at its hangar bay (for stealth shuttle). Just can't be 60 meters EVER. Addirionally, all those PDCs are 40mm (like Bofors), each of those 6 barrels is about 10cm outer diameter, makes 6 barrel assembly about 45 (and +) cm diameter, which in proportion with length of guns makes the one smallest, most compact (MCRN PDC) 4-4.2meters long, thus when add a dome turred behind the gun (like UNN does) it goes over 5 and up to 7 meters. As for Knoshu class shuttle, there are photos made by studio with human scale. It is about 12 m tall if we consider human being 1.75-1.8 meters tall (unless wearing space suit that makes average human 10-15 cm taller in average).

      the boarding pod thing is actually very possible, you match V, remember in space its relative velocity, so if you match and come alongside you can decelerate over dozens of meters, might make for a rough landing but very do-able. a lot of math, but real life spaceships intercept satellites all the time.

    The boarding pods do make a degree of sense on this ship. There are plenty of stations and similar it might want to board and for anything that can move fast enough to make boarding difficult it's very capable of knocking out their engines (probably most of the time before the target even knows they're there) before they deploy their boarders like they did to the Donny.

  • @johnclark3531
    @johnclark3531 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    Boarding might work better with a stealth ship. If aiming at a station just crawl in slow, sync up movement, then the pod doesn't need to rush. It could pull up like the ISS docking. THEN go loud when they breach.

    • @EGRJ
      @EGRJ ปีที่แล้ว

      If you're that close, the station might be able to see you. You'd also have to avoid any station traffic.
      And it might be easier just to use a regular ship with your boarders on board.

    • @PSC4.1
      @PSC4.1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@EGRJit's still feasible, after all the Knight, which was the closest to a stealth ship in comparison to the Canterbury couldnt see it, shipyards have advanced sensors yes, but when a ship runs cold and all of the stealth panels are angled in such a way that the radar wouldn't catch it, you would need to be using electro-optical sensors and someone to watch those sensors, for example if the stealth ship wanted to, it could have nuked a station, the station only seeing the missile and the ship that launched the missile, the ship would probably only appear for 1/4 of a second then dissapear unless it's using its engine.

    • @mastershipstreamarchives4159

      Radar is exponentially more powerful the closer you get to the source. It would be seen by radar and possibly LIDAR in railgun range, and PDCs would already be able to respond before they got close.

  • @blackc1479
    @blackc1479 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    A good visual example for the stealth scatter effect would be in that pic of the 117.
    You can see one panel on the nose and one on the starboard engine housing reflecting the light at about the same brightness.
    All the other panels are reflecting at different angles.
    If the light was radar, it would look about 5-10% of its actual size.

    Just wanted to say something about the boarding pods and when they where used in the show. The Donnager fight was in reality tactically sound for boarding. First the stealth ships closed distance and concealed there numbers with that line ahead maneuver using the drive of the first ship to mask the rest. Second stage of the fight was the overwhelming missile and railgun barrage to both close distance further and take out/ occupy the PDCs of the Donnager. Third and most crucially was the plasma torpedoes focused on the reactor sections of the ship to cut the engines. This part is very important because with the engines shut down the ship is essentially free floating in space meaning if the attacking ships match that velocity, the Relative velocity of the ships would be zero meaning the pods could easily fly over and attach at slow speeds before the drives where relit being covered by any active PDCs by floating space junk from the battle itself.
    Its crazy that a VERY realistic tactic was used in a scifi show. In modern warfare its almost impossible to disable a ship to the point where it can be boarded without outright destruction of your target. Or the target scuttling itself to avoid capture like the Donny did.

    Personally my biggest issue with boarding pods is that the enemies have the PDC's which are meant to take out fast, small and maneuverable missiles that come near them, and they are very good at this. So when you launch a boarding pod which is slower, bigger and less agile, I imagine it wouldn't go well for them, even if they themselves were stealthy as well.
    This makes me think the boarding pods would be used only for civilian targets or otherwise disabled ships, something that isn't going to be moving very fast when you finally launch them, or very likely to counter them once you do. I don't really see these being used as an offensive move during combat where weapons are blazing in every direction and ships are constantly maneuvering, making it hard for a pod to match the movements without becoming a tasty space pancake.

    • @ledocteur7701
      @ledocteur7701 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yup, I would imagine boarding pods more has a mean to take control of a disabled ship, it's easy for the crew inside to protect the airlocks, but if you don't know where the boarding enemy is gonna enter from, it's a lot harder to pick them out at a choke point when they arrive.
      This could also be useful to quickly enter a damaged ship in need of rescuing, if the airlocks are unusable.

    • @carloshenriquezimmer7543
      @carloshenriquezimmer7543 ปีที่แล้ว

      Manuvering in space, at orbital speeds, in a ship like the Donnager, is letal to the crew. The size of it makes any small motion into a wirlwind of angular momentum, that could liquifie a human body.
      And during the missile and railgun barrage they concentrated the fire in one side of the Donnie, eliminating the PDC coverage. This, plus the PDC's minimal effective range to be able to cover the approach, alowed them to close in for the kill.
      Also, the drive went out during the assault, so the pods were able to do theyr thing.

    • @TheThingInMySink
      @TheThingInMySink 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      And yet, there are plenty of boardable targets in the expanse, targets you might be forced to board, say a ship gets ''appropriated'' by a bunch of pirates, and they're holding the crew hostage, what do you do? I'll tell you what you don't do, shoot the ship into a thousand pieces, because that'd be insane. You need to have a way to board ships, and you can't always rely on your ability to do so via more conventional methods. To no one's surprise helicopters don't work in space so that counts out our current day boarding methods, so why not boarding pods? Everyone always obsesses over the peer to peer scenarios, but there are so many jobs for warships that don't include slugging it out in an even fight.

      The OPA were smuggling stealth composites in the very first episode, long before Marco Inaros was in a position to work on his grand plan. Breaching pods are not meant to be used against ships still under power - they are meant to be used when the enemy ship is crippled and dead in space. so smashing into a pole is not a thing here yes its risky but that is not the point - the entire thing of space combat is dangerous to begin with - and if you want to capture enemy ship then you simply must board a breaching pod makes new doors for you to enter thus making defence that much harder because the enemies will not come from the already known airlocks - and if the ship is already cirppled then you might not even know where these additional entry points are located thus making reliable defence that much harder.

    The breaching pods are deployed aftern Dony's main drive is disabled and she doesn't seem to be able to maneuver anymore. Also, the crew are unaware of the capability of the stealth ships, meaning none of them might not have thought about being boarded. As you said it yourself, boarding action on a speeding space warship is hilariously stupid so noone in the right mind is going to do it. Apparently, Protogen's merces are hilariously stupid enough to do so.
    The stealth ships have quite advance weapon systems to supplement the lack in number of them, but only to certain extent. The ship can fire more torpedoes and railgun rounds for the same amount of time to other ship also means it will runs out of ammunition quicker. Given that the ship is not designed to be the pure attack ship, it stands to reason that they wouldn't be heavily loaded with ammunition.
    I believe those pods aren't ment to be used against warships but the pack of stealth ships still don't have enough firepower the totally blowing up the Martian warship from outside so boarding the ship and try to blow it from inside is needed.

    • @thomass2505
      @thomass2505 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      This is just my guess.
      The heat doesn't really dissipate into space, so it would cling to the engine. So as long as the engine doesn't point at then no one is actually going to see the heat signature.
      Plus, if you're far enough out it's going to be a fairly small heat signature and they're only going to see it if they're looking for it and know what they're looking for.
      They say basically the he same thing at the end of the video too.

      @@thomass2505You fail to understand that ships in the expanse universe use fusion power plants, fusion power generates literally higher temperatures than anything in the universe, the engines don't matter the hull of the ship would light up like a giant Christmas decoration, and yet somehow the ships manage to radiate all that heat into space while being stealthy.
      The only sci-fi tech stealth I have meet that would actually work is the cloaking devices from Star Trek, by bending light (and thereby other emissions) around your ship you could theoretically achieve stealth in space, this is the only way that would actually work, other Sci-fi explanations like the expanse or Mass Effects stealth have no chance of working.
