HELP No start after fuel filter change

  • What to do to get a common rail started if you run the rail dry after a fuel filter change. The common rail is self venting but sometimes it may need a little help. The biggest culprit is getting air out of all the fuel filters so it does not make its way into the rail. No damage will occur if this happens it just has to get solid fuel again and your good to go

    Hey I have a 2010 international with cummins isx, the truck was staring and running fine i did an oil change as soon I started at the shop it idle a little rough but I though it may got some air and it will go away but it being giving me problems to start, the rough idle never went away until I tie the top cap in the fuel water separator, but the hard time to start keep happening, like 2 days ago I crank it 5 or 6 times for over 15 secs and would not start I took fuel out of the tank and put it in the fuel water separator and It did start and ran fine any idea what it may be?

      Your fuel is draining back to the tank. Somewhere you have air getting into the suction side system. If it was ok and you changed fuel filters(oil change) take a hard look at that filter assembly on the frame. There are many styles of frame filters and it is usually an oring. The plastic housings or bowls can develope small cracks after time and not seal overnight but are ok once running. Your symptomes of rough running and hard start are typical of suction side fuel system issues allowing air in. The fact that you filled that filter and it then started tells you the fuel system is having issues with air entering. Find and fix that air problem and your good to go.

      @@ENGINESHOPJOE i just put the new filter i the fuel water separator. I clean it and checked really good everything seen fine, changed then O ring but notice I didn't have O ring in the top cap fill it all the way up with new fuel, prime it (turn ignition on) once with out the top cap and the fuel it went down re fill it put the cap and prime it again did it 2 times with cap and 2 times with out the cap one of each (first with out cap then with cap then again with out cap then with cap ) fill it all the way up in the last one and started and then did started. It started just fine but now the fuel water separator Is almost full with a brand new filter is this okay? Or it will go down once the truck is moving ?.... BTW thanks hopefully this does fix my starting issues.

    Man, you're a diamond !
    Been puzzling over restarting my WJ Jeep today after a filter change... came indoors, watched this vid and got back to it.
    Third cycle the lift pump overflowed the filter, wound it back up and gave her some cranks.
    Job done.
    Cheers, buddy !

    If car doesn't start after fuel filter change, just spray easy start or brake cleaner into the air intake pipe afte the air flow sensor and start her up with full revs at the same time, you will need help. She will will fire up, hold the revs and she will be good again 👍

    Hello Joe, your advice on this video just saved our Volvo 2021 today from extensive work. The air got to the fuel lines and my truck gradually lost its power and stopped. It could not start despite the fuel filter change and priming. I did what you teach in the video and I was able to start the truck and deliver the load. I am extremely grateful for your expertise and that you share your knowledge with all of us. Thanks again.

    My car performance was low so I made my mechanic change the fuel filter and it worked my performance is better by my car which usually take 1 sec to start now its taking longer cranks and literally I’m so sad about it because now the car feels new again but the cranking won’t. Also I never heard belt sound while my engine runs but now there’s also belt sound coning from engine. HELP

    Hey mate I changed my fuel filter yesterday on my vz commodore Ute and now the fuel pump only whines up every couple of minutes and it still doesn’t work wanna start unless I crank it several times

    • @ENGINESHOPJOE
      @ENGINESHOPJOE  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not sure what engine that has but in general if it was fine before the filter change it sounds like you are getting air in the fuel and that is why the pump winds up and it is hard to start.

    I had a John Deere 300d rock truck in the shop and I did not dump out the old fuel in the separator started it up, ran shitty turbo was boosting then it shut off, will crank but no start, figured it was air in the fuel lines and now it is having troubles cranking any tips?

      Does the starter spin the engine fast enough?
      Generally speaking if you have to push it to get it going look for something that becomes more efficient once the engine is spinning at normal running rpm.

      Any engines with electric priming / transfer pumps running that pump a few key cycles will prime the fuel system low pressure side. But some procedures are engine specific.

    Whats a Pressure filter?

    • @ENGINESHOPJOE
      @ENGINESHOPJOE  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There are primary and secondary fuel filters. The secondary fuel filters on Common rail engines filter to 4 microns. That is dirt invisible to the naked eye. The filter media is so fine you really cant "suck fuel through the media or filtering element" So they push it through by making the filter assembly pressurized. Most have between 65-200 psi in them when the engine is running. The filter on the frame or primary filter is somewhere between 10-30 microns and those have fuel pulled from the tank through them. That is done by a mechanical gear pump sort of like a hydraulic pump works.
