  • Karan Johar talks to Baradwaj Rangan about how Aditya Chopra introduced him to the cinema of Mani Ratnam. He talks about how different things would have been had he presented SS Rajamouli’s Ega in the North.
Talking about 2.0, he says it’s going to have one of the biggest openings of Indian cinema and why it was a no-brainer to choose to distribute the film.
Calling Bahubali a ‘beautiful and creative slap on our faces’ he explains why South Indian films have always been the pioneers of new technology.

If they had talked about Arjun reddy or C/o Kancherapalem then I wouldn’t mind but they are literally praising the mainstream shit which has been plaguing the industry for so long. It’s almost like they are saying “It’s amazing how they even think to do that” in a condescending way.

I would disagree with you. I know there is some masala that Telugu films can avoid but as a Tamilian, I sometimes get tired of watching serious movies they make in Kollywood. There aren't many films you can go watch with your entire family. Yes they are great to watch but sometime we want to watch movies about a guy next door. I watch a lot of Nani and Sharwanand movies but throw in Prabhas, Allu Arjun and Ram Charan here and there, you get all that Indian cinema has to offer. I like Hindi movies as well but it is again for the elite audience. I like Telugu cinema because strikes a balance and it is for everyone.

I wish the film Hindustani by Kamal Hassan was mentioned in this interview. It was a fantastic movie. First dubbed south Indian movie that I ever saw and it was perfect in every way. Not to mention that it had the audience cheer for a very old protagonist which almost never happens in movies.

There's so many reasons to love Karan Johar. Listen to him talk and feel his knowledge. The guy is a chameleon, he can be the funky shoe wearing judge or host of a TV show and gossip like it's none of your business and then he can be this encyclopedia of cinema who can make you feel stories and the visuals... I mean look at his part of Lust Stories... He understands human emotions. Thanks a lot FC for bringing forth such wonderful interviews.
