  • So i wanted to try some more Cast Iron and yes i know its an Alloy not an Element but they would look great on the shelf with all my other Cubes. I also thought why not do a Nordic Gold one aswell and if there is any metal left make some sweet Nordic Gold coins.

    HOW TO MIRROR FINISH A BAR
    I start with an 80 grit flap disc on my angle grinder then I use my drill with 50 mm round sanding discs . I start with 150 grit then go through the following Grits 240-400-800 Then once I get to the following Grits I use a small squirt of WD-40 1200-1500-2000-2500-3000. The WD40 helps to lubricate the discs and stops the sanding disk binding up with the metal powder . Then after that I use my buffer wheel on my bench grinder to get a perfect mirrored finish on it👌🏻😁.
    ****************************************************
    STEEL FOR MY FRIEND
    I keep all my steel and cast iron pieces and I give them to my friend and once he gets about a tonne from me and his own collecting he takes that to the scrapyard and sells it then he buys some beer and comes over to my house and we make a night of it.
    No My friend doesn’t have a TH-cam channel he just scraps metal in his spare time.

    Things I have learned by watching BigstackD.
    1: I want my own little Ingot
    2: The melting is not the hardest part, the after-work and preparations are key
    3: I do not understand why the metal come out of the mold ugly, but I really enjoy it when they are shiny.
    4: Friday is now BigstackDay

      in technicallity a furnace like that could melt iron. hell, it can even turn iron to steel.
      the problem is the amount of gas you will end up using, because to maintain that insane amount of temperature is madness, probably waste a whole propane or two.
      but the worst thing isnt melting iron, its the heat, fyi. human skincells destroyed at 100'c , imagine 1500'c right beside you, it is uncomfromtable

    Got the 4kg Devil Forge last week - WHAT A BEAST!!!! Only the sun puts out more heat.
    Thanks Bigstackd!
    Lessons learned (after pouring 11 copper bars): 1. Load up crucibe AS MUCH AS possible for efficiency sake (less gas usage). 2. Keep scrap below top rim of crucible so copper won't fall over and run down the outside and create puddle in forge which will dissolve kaowool (patched with the extra wool that came with forge) 3. Don't let hot stir stick fall on gas line! Had to cut 11" off and reattach. Installed heat resistant tubing over gas line.

    Hey Bigstack, just did my first ever aluminum melt today and it was successful! I was wondering if you had any advice for cleaning clay graphite crucibles after use? I was melting soda cans so there was lots of dross stuck all over the crucible that would not shake/scrape out very nicely while the crucible was still hot. The stuff remaining in the crucible doesn't appear to contain too much aluminum and mostly looks like crap that wouldn't melt nicely. Any tips?

    You can submerge the propane bottle in a bucket of water to keep it from freezing, that's what we do with our mobile glass blowing unit.

    Good looking element cubes. Was the cast iron lumpy because it didn't melt all the way, or just excessive slag. I usually melt my cast iron with the little 4kg furnace, a little more efficient. Need some good gloves with that stuff, it is like standing next to the sun. Great video, stay safe my friend. 🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺

      Kinda bro it was a combination of not skimming enough and not stiring properly before I skimmed But as I only needed one little cube I wasn’t too worried about it that’s why I come out like lumpy diarrhoea. But at the end of the day I got what I wanted & proudly put it on the shelf👍🏻.
      I’ve got your antHill casting on my watch later list I’ll be sure to comment once I’ve got time to check it out buddy👊🏻

    Good show mate. Melting the iron brought back a lot of memories for me. I worked in a foundry and we did many alloys. Our furnace had a capacity of about 29k lbs and was an arc furnace. we would tap out at about 3k degrees Fahrenheit.
    Watching you struggle with the magnet was priceless. An old trick, try if you like. Using a household electric cord, make a single layer wrap around any ferrous object like a screwdriver shaft. Plug the cord in and leave it overnight. It will be magnetic.
    Thanks again and be safe.

      I did a plain iron medallion I polished one side and when I stamped it, it shattered so I carefully super glued it together so it's fine, really. I'm not even sad well maybe a little 😢 🤣

    Thought i'd let ya know, he tilted his head back and forth, wagged his tail, and made a little whine type noise.

    I'm guessing you coated the iron with some sort of clear spraypaint sealant or a thin layer of WD-40, etc to keep it rust-free after polishing?

    Trick I learned when dealing with such high heats is dip the gloves in water so it keeps your hands from burning inside the glove

    • @christopherfranz1547
      @christopherfranz1547 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No! Water conducts heat through the gloves. If you've ever picked a hot pan up off the stove with a wet oven mitt, you'll know that it can burn you quick.

    • @codybrox4693
      @codybrox4693 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No not to grab the crucible itself if your grabbing anything with gloves that’s hot enough to burn your a idiot but I’ve found that when my gloves are over the furnace or I’m scooping out the slag from the glowing crucible the heat alone will penetrate my glove and start cooking my hands inside so I keep a bucket of cool water around to dip my gloves into not soak them through but enough that the material holds moisture and so it helps keep my gloves cool when I’m working near such extreme heat that’s what I’ve found when I melt with my furnace

    There's a good reason to put all the metals together to make Nordic Gold. The other metals will melt before copper, and will form a pool of molten metal which will allow the copper to melt easier.

    I've been watching your vids for a while now and I have 2 questions..
    1st Why do you heat up your spoon before taking out the slag?
    2nd Why do you heat up the molds before you pour the iron or copper in?
