Outstanding. A great practical, usable clear lesson. Showing us groovy ass new wrinkles on a popular beat rather than just a chop to try to shoe horn in some place like you see so much of online. This is one that the guys I play with will appreciate. It never occurred to me to try train beats as double strokes. As soon as I heard it, I clicked pause and then off to the shed. Really fun stuff. I started messing with doing one single train, then one double train .. then two, four .. Ideally it would be awesome (and do-able) to be able to more or less vary those two train styles at will. Well, It's about an hour later and back at the video I see now that we have paradiddles and hands in unison. Good stuff. Best online lesson I've had in months. I have a New Year's eve jam tomorrow. Let's see if I can maybe get the double stroke thing good enough to take it out of captivity tomorrow night. I got more sheddin' to do.
Fricken Great! I absolutely love these short, well articulated, awesome tips for drumming! I'm a guitar player (check out MrSyCoe channel), but if I was the boss in a working group, I'd make the drummer watch every single one of these!!!
Jim Riley is a fabulous teacher, very good at articulating grooves to his students.
Thanks for demonstrating these different methods. Sometimes I prefer the dynamics of these alternative methods vs. the single stroke roll.

Great lesson!! And an incredible drummer Mr. Riley is.
Great vid! Not sure how bored you’d have to be to use a parradiddle though! 😜
