THAT GASCHETTE OPEN LETTER !!!!! I COMPLETELY FORGOT !!! wild wild wild. I sometimes feel the industry so badly wants to grow that it's willing to compromise on so much - I also think there's been a huge shift of hands / power in how the old guard want fashion to be experienced, traditional formats like runways etc, versus us younglings who's viewpoints / awareness / urgency seems to be able to penetrate the pomp and gatekeeping of these events. I love what Lukhanyo Mdingi has done by putting on Provenance, his exhibition, and taking groups / students on a walk through of his process - intentions - fabrication - collaborations and community. This is an effective way to invite people into the fold, to encourage young designers to find their own blueprint or story telling arch. Fashion, all over the world, has lost much of its substance through capitalism and embedding toxicity within its social frameworks - now, the energy of fashion weeks seem to emanate this energy of a bygone format. We are over it, it doesn't impress or move us. I would love to see our fashion weeks consolidated, invested in, and used as an experimental space for workshops / think tanks/ engagements (with proper funding) like Helsinki Fashion Week for example, which launched itself as testing ground for cross-collaboration around sustainability. We have the potential to seed incredible frontiers on the continent. It cannot just be about the clothes, or being seen - as a world we have GROWN. LOVE your takes Khensani, your incisive mind and ability to communicate these things so well.
thank you, holly! lukhanyo is such a great example - and i feel like him along with some of the other local designers who do still opt to do fashion weeks, at least the global ones like NY and london etc, manage such a good balance with this old guard but really injecting their own perspective. and 100% agree with consolidation and experimentation. like i really appreciate safw's work with the mohair collective during the pandemic and the masterclasses/discussions they had with the designers and farmers were so interesting. we're like the 2nd biggest producer of mohair in the world but mmuso maxwell has to send those textiles to europe to get woven and knitted and there's this gold opportunity no one's been able to take to bring that production back here. i wish that was something safw could focus on as opposed to just the runway presentations. i'll check out helsinki fw, sounds like a really great model. and thanks for watching!
I couldn't agree more I'm having a birthday event soon and whilst looking at my Pinterest board I realised everything was by foreign designers so I thought I'd spend some Rand's and get something cute and looked to sa fashion week and local fashion publications for a jaw dropping high fashion piece I could wear and I found nothing, nothing inspiring, or unique, nothing WOW, it was really disappointing because I think we have enough cotton golf t shirts. I even contacted a few designers willing to buy the material with no budget and give them complete creative freedom to create something interesting yet everyone kept asking for a picture to copy or a screenshot of exactly what I want :( and it's possible in a third world country my favourite designers rn are from Indonesia and they are killing it they also present stuff so beautifully!
oh, i'm sorry no one was able to help you out. i hope you're able to get something in time. I'll definitely give indeonesian designers a check, I've never seen anything from there before! but what about something from bam? i really like their stuff and I've seen it up close and it's fantastic quality
As a designer I am so happy to read this comment this whole showing me a picture or coming with a specific picture thing kills so much creativity in this industry
As someone currently studying fashion in England but wants to break out in the african market. Your ideal fashion industry sounds a lot like want I plan to do in the future.
No Listen someone had to say it…Its so unfortunate how now one has a cooking clue whats going on with most of this institutions and shame at this rate we might end up no longer having SAFW
Thanks big brain Khensani!! Happy 2 see u back! fashionlover4 has a video on 90s designer W< and how he reinterpreted traditional runway shoes during the brands tenure without using super over the top expensive elements (one show was just the models square dancing) and I think that you made great points that it’s time to reinvent the context of how we display fashion outside of the traditional mega house pathway because it is boring lol
Please write an Open Letter on whatever publication to Lucille Booyzen of SAFW and Dr. Precious Moloi-Motsepe of AFI and tell them to squash the beef so we can have 1 Fashion week in 1 city with more resources. That 1 organisation in my opinion could then monopolise the fashion week in SA so could have Jozi Fashion or Cape Town fashion week nje so that our industry can actually look like it knows what it’s doing also at least enabling the designers to at least choose a venue of the choice to be able to tell a more interesting story that will resonate with their collection instead of just all designers showcasing in one place like it’s Paris in 1992, the answers are there but the people in charge are just not open to fixing the problem…there’s a lot more to say here but I’m trying not make this a whole essay about the obvious solutions we have but yeah, great video thank you for saying it out loud
It would be interesting to see the contrast with Nigerian fashion week. Not to start any wars, but I saw a lot of coverage from Okay Africa, and there was a lot put into the event Tshepo Jeans seems to have that more intimate presentation that was being suggested, which is also an example of a success story by taking a more personalised route
oooh lagos fashion week is a treat! i think it's fair to say that the nigerian designers really put their neck in it and the org seems to be doing a lot to really drive engagement and implementing programs to support them long-term.
an absolute delight lmao! everyone used to chat a lot more, now everyone's just kind of resigned to saying nothing all the time :( thanks for watching, lexi!
Don't worry, SA fashion week will be better 🔥🔥🔥🔥🖤💚🖤💚🖤💚🖤🇿🇦2023

from our lips to god's ears or something lol
Totally agree that there is no need to ferl beholden to the western model of fashion presentation
