i remember in the early 80s when when the els first took over from the milwaukee road they were still hauling ore from the groveland mine. i worked at the strohs warehouse on the bass lake road. many a time they would be coming up the grade from like bass lake to the area of the underpass culverts an couldnt quite make it to antoine yard where they handed the cars off to the cnw. they would back down the grade an come back with half a train an repeat.

You're so right! The tourist line on which I worked for a bunch of years had a spot where the line went down to cross a creek. In the fall and in the rain, a single engine (F-7, GP-7 or GP-9) couldn't get the consist up from the creek level. The train usually was 4 or 5 coaches brackets by one engine on each end. Even though we sanded all the way, we had to send the second engine crew memberto the engine on the other end to shove.
electric locomotives are good. Don't get me wrong, but they don't have the weight or the power like a diesel locomotive does. but they both have their pros and cons to them and their strengths and weaknesses like anything in life.

I have found out when the track is wet it is almost like grease on the track.a little slippery

I think there were 30 lpsiding loads
At 5:40 at least they stopped but yet still jumped in front of it nothing to see there
Don't forget that 1221 has about 250 fewer HP than do 501, 502, or 503.
The SD40-2s are 3000 hp, so the SD9 is 1250 less... and likely more as the generator is 69 yrs and tiring...
Sounds like 501 was shut down

The ELS DOES use diesel-electric locomotives.
It was 29 Smart Siding loads. There were Alter Metal gondolas and a few other cars also.
The long grade for Sagola hill on wet rails with leaves made for slippery conditions, they needed more footing (grip). This train ~4,400 tons.
Hoping that the line from Ladysmith to Escanaba re opens soon. Just a matter of when the mining begins.
The section from Ladysmith to Prentice is in pretty good shape yet, the Rhinelander to Goodman needs work with some crossings removed and overgrowth.
