    This video covers the step-by-step process of turning one of our unique Crushgrind Mills on your lathe.
    Crushgrind Mills are one of our most popular kitchenware projects. They allow you to grind pepper, salt and dry spices.
    For additional information, view the companion article on our blog: blog.woodturnerscatalog.com/20...
    You can adjust the coarseness of the grind by turning the wheel on the bottom of the mechanism, and with the adjustment knob on the bottom the shaft can be cut to any length. This creates all kinds of design possibilities making the Crushgrind one of our favorite mill kits!

    Loved the video. I turned out 6 sets for Christmas presents. I found a useful tip on the 3rd or 4th set; that is boring a hole in the mill part from the bottom end with a 3/16" x 8" drill bit. Seems to speed up the process of boring through the maple.

    I enjoyed the video and followed instructions to make my own mill. One question...at what stage is the tenon removed from the top of the body. This is used for all of the bottom-up hole machining and the body then turned around to fit on jam chuck and revolving centre for finalising profile - but you don't mention removal of the top tenon (see video at 5min 9 secs. Thanks

    • @CraftSuppliesUSA

      Thanks for the feedback. Drilling speeds are very slow, 400-500 RPMs. Turning and sanding is much faster, somewhere around 2,500 RPMs. Hope that helps!

    Awesome video, quick question about the finishing method. How long you let it dry between coats? I understand it will depend upon temperature but I noticed that it feels dry to touch within a couple of minutes.

    • @CraftSuppliesUSA
      @CraftSuppliesUSA  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question and sorry for the late response. We typically recommend letting the 50/50 Deft dry for about an hour or until it's dry to the touch. If you do have the time, letting it sit overnight won't hurt. The drying process allows the Deft to harden in the wood fibers, creating a barrier that prevents oil finishes from penetrating the wood.

    I am using your crush grind mill kits and love the product. I have turned two mills where the mill is slightly shorter than the rod in the mechanism. I have cut the rod to shorten it but can not get the cut end flattened enough to stay in the grinder. Any suggestions on how to repair this? I keep hammering the end on a vice but so far no luck.

    Ok, now it is time to make a Video of a "Snap-in" Crushgrind mechanism using a shaft of PVC. This enables one to use the snap-in mechanism and turn an identical mill as the shaft mechanism. I have made 4 of these and they work as well or better than the shaft. Note: It is technically different than making the shaft mill, but not more difficult, just different.

    Do people normaly coat the inside of the wood grinder? I want to make one but I'm worried that there would be wood dust mixed into the seasoning. How can I make it work?

    • @CraftSuppliesUSA
      @CraftSuppliesUSA  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Start by selecting a wood that's not prone to allergies. As for the inside, you can clean out the debris with some sand paper, then wipe it clean with a rag. If you want to coat the inside, spray some sanding sealer inside and let it dry before you add any seasoning to the mill. Here's a link to the Sanding Sealer. www.woodturnerscatalog.com/p/42/2405/Masters-Magic-Sanding-Sealer

    • @CraftSuppliesUSA

    • @CraftSuppliesUSA

      The chuck jaws we used would not have fit the recess in the peppermill. However, that would be a good option if you have the appropriate jaw size.

      I agree. Could never understand why these sizes were chosen. I had to order a 1 1/16 bit off amazon. Imported from Asia and the bit shaft won’t fit the ⅜” Strongbore holder. It’s too big. Their manufacturings tolerances don’t measure up. Would have been way simpler to go with a more common 1” size which can be sourced from virtually any tool retailer made by higher quality manufacturers.

Until I reordered about 13 sets, and all of them the top Friction pieces would hold the shaft. I tried adjust the shift with a hammer. No luck. Oh also the adjustment know in the bottom , for coarseness takes two hand and a tool of sort to unlock. So they useless for me and a waste of money. Very disappointed , I sure the the kits where better than woodcraft's. I was wrong. So dissatisfied
