      I tried this salad in Thailand. I was totally in love with this salad.I remember it having chicken. Does this salad also be made with chicken? Or would it be better with dry shrimp?

      This looks wonderful. I'm going to make this for my wife's birthday next week. She already loves grapefruit and Thai papaya salad, so I can't wait to try this one. Unfortunately, we can't get the wild beetle leaves in the Eastern US, so I'll probably use lettuce leaves.

    I like that you taste the pomelo before deciding how to season it, instead of just following the same recipe each time. The sign of a great cook :-)

    Pomelo's are my favorite period. We have 2 pomelo trees. One is pink and the other is yellow, when our trees are full that's all I eat for months til they are gone lol. I grew up eating them when I was a kid and eating freshly picked pomelo is awesome :) I've never eaten pomelo any other way so why not try it this way, it looks delicious and flavorful.

    I love pomelo so much! Just discovered it last year. Luckily I live in an area (Vancouver) where people appreciate pomelo and can acquire them fairly easily in season. (I get them at Crystal Mall in Burnaby and City Ave. Market in New West). Love them in a salad but lately I eat the whole thing fresh over the course of the day..😋

    One of my favorite dishes! I miss the Pomelo in Thailand. One interesting fact about the "wild betel leaves" is that they are essentially the leaves of a close relative of the Black Pepper vine (Piper nigrum), chaplu is Piper sarmentosum. If you think about it kind of explains the unique and interesting flavor of the leaves (really it's kind of indescribable, but there are some fresh pepper notes).

      Grapefruit is more bitter and juicy. Pomelo is drier, sweeter and has a different fragrance. I suppose it may work, but you'll need to add more sugar to adjust the taste.

    Pailin, we don't get many sweet pomelos here in Minnesota so what my mom does is peel the skin and leave it out for a couple days. The peel will dry up but the flesh becomes very sweet. Maybe you can try that the next time you get pomelo in Canada! 🤗

      zucchinigreen From pos as well. There's a Chinese supermarket on the corner of broadway & south quay that sells fish sauce, probably not the best brand but it does the job.
      They also have some Japanese and Korean products but it's mainly Chinese. There's another Asian supermarket somewhere in south with Vietnamese, Filipino, Thai products but again I believe they specialize in Chinese products fresh, frozen & dried.
      I've been to the restaurant in Curepe/ Valsayn it's pretty decent.

    You said that this isn't worth doing in Canada because the pomelos aren't very good, but you don't give any hints as to why. Like, I know in general fruit is better, sweeter, and more flavorful in the tropics, but I didn't really think that applied to citrus.

    • @emilyc8958
      @emilyc8958 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      In a very specific few weeks in the early growing stage of citrus, if they are exposed to a cold snap they will become sour rather than sweet- a country with a milder winter improves the flavour of citrus. I would be curious to know whether the fruit in canada is imported as well

    • @PailinsKitchen
      @PailinsKitchen  7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Canada does not grow pomelo, the ones available are from China (at least ones I've seen), and I can only get them during Chinese New Year where people buy them as symbol of good luck. So most people don't care that they taste terrible (sour/bitter) because they are not buying them to eat but rather as gifts.

    those leaves are used in my country to make "paan"

    • @Vogeln
      @Vogeln 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The leaves used for paan are a different species. It is called "betel" leaves but is related to the ones shown in the video. Betel leaves are much thicker than the wild betel leaves in the video. I remember watching my grandmother making "chaw" with betel leaves, areca palm nuts, lime paste, and tobacco. She would chew it to release the stimulant chemicals and it would stain her teeth blackish/red. Not the most attractive look.

      For Paan, it's 'betel leaf' which is not the same as 'wild betel leaf' as she said in the video.
