We will unfortunately not be making changes to the existing MIDI features in MS4... but will most certainly be adding them shortly afterwards. It would be very useful to have a chat so you can give me a sense of everything else you'd like to see. Thanks! Edit: we will be using MIDI 2.0 with MIDI 1.0 as a fallback, if you're interested
I really like the way you explain. You don't waste time talking with all sorts of unnecessary details. Cheer!! You know the important details well and that makes you an excellent teacher. Well done again! I just learned about Musescore. He is great. I tried DORICO, but there is so much hidden in this software. The learning curve is long and sometimes you even have to guess where things are. I wonder if it is possible to make your own Expression Map or Program Change with Musescore? Thank you very much for your precious help. roger
An excellent video, my friend. I'm changing my workflow this year and this is the information I need to make that happen. I migrated to Pro Tools to handle the heavy lifting of my sound design, so I'm switching to using MS with Sibelius to design the instrument patches in Alchemy, the Sampler, etc, so I don't have to load a Logic file.
This was a really helpful tutorial!! I'm a MuseScore user (on a college student budget) and ran into some weird choppy playback issues after adding the instrument list and outputting to the IAC bus. Is there any way to remedy this?
Man, this was incredibly helpful. One question: when I'm entering notes on a non-Mainstage staff in Dorico - e.g., piano, guitar, etc. - my controller plays the Dorico-specific sound AND whatever patch is active in Mainstage simultaneously; only in note-entry, not in playback. On the Mainstage staff the sound is Mainstage only. How can I keep Mainstage from being heard while I'm entering notes on other staves?
I'm not a heavy user of Dorico so there might be a way to do this in there. But the easiest method for me would be to click the speaker icon on the top right of the MainStage concert to mute the main output. Then unmute it when you're ready for the full playback.
@@CatherallAudio Fix: Mainstage setting on primary keyboard in Workspace was set to Input = All. Switched it to IAC 1, problem solved. Thank you so much!
@@CatherallAudio Do you have any insight as to why the IAC Driver channel doesn't show up in the Dorico mixer? Playback sounds fantastic, but Mainstage is absent in the MP3 audio export from Dorico.
Hey James! This video was super helpful for me. Very easy to understand, especially with what seems to be a very niche audio situation. I had a question, though. Would I be able to run Mainstage, Sibelius, AND Logic (for samples in Mainstage) at the same time, but on a Macbook Air? Would this be too strenuous for a laptop (say the M2 Macbook Air with 16 gigs of RAM)? Thank you!
Hey Ethan I’m glad the video was helpful! 16GB of ram should be fine but it’ll depend on how many instruments you have loaded in MainStage and Logic. The more you have the more issues you might run into.
Hi James. I have Dorico 4 and want to use my sounds in Logic Pro X to playback my scores. At 1:37 when you say the rule of thumb is to "have as many buses as "keyboards" in MainStage, would "keyboard" in my situation refer to the physical hardware (such as the midi keyboard I'm using for a midi interface) or the software collections of sounds (in my case the Logic Pro X sounds)? I ask this because MainStage (in Layout/Hardware Input) in the MIDI Port drop-down shows my KOMPLETE KONTROL M32 (midi interface), LOGIC REMOTE, and the 3 IAC Driver buses I created via Audio Midi Setup. I wanna make sure I don't start off on the wrong foot with this setup. Thanks.
Hi James! I've run into an issue integrating mainstage into musescore. Since I have no midi controller, I have no other midi input BESIDES my IAC driver. In other words, I'm forced to create a midi loop. Do you have a quick fix or do I have to purchase a midi controller?
Hi is it possible that you make video about connect MainStage with your Lyrics software and specifically ProPresenter, because that is a software widely used for screen projection and lyrics. Right now I am trying to connect MainStage with ProPresenter so when I change Lyrics slide automatically sound get change on MainStage, or opposite, when I change the sound on MainStage, the Lyrics slide get changed on ProPresenter. That also will help me somehow to use my foot pedal to change Lyrics on ProPresenter, the time of playing. Because it is hard to connect pedal directly to ProPresenter. If you do Video about please let me know, I really need help on that. Thank you.
I'm using Musescore 4 and the only MIDI information I'm seeming to get in Mainstage is the metronome? I'm not sure if you've messed around with MS4 yet but I would definitely appreciate it if you have a solution for this. Thanks!
Seems to be a bug where the MIDI info is sent but registers the velocity as either a 0 or 1 depending on the dynamic. That's on Musescore's end, so not much can be done. For what I'm using it for (triggering samples for synths in indoor perc) it's not a huge deal. Unfortunately, I'm still getting the metronome MIDI data as well and that's messing stuff up.
This is going to sound absolutely bizarre or like some voodoo magic, but... to get rid of the popping sound on Mac: 1. Go to Preferences > Sound and then Sound Effects. 2. By default, Funk is selected. Change it to Blow. 3. Close MuseScore and reopen the score with popping. 4. Play. There is some strange conflict with the default sound effects on Mac.
Honestly speaking, how does this video not have more views...incredible! Thank you!

Hi James,
Thanks for the great tutorial! Did I miss the instructions for getting the mainstage sounds to export with the other sounds in Dorico?

I’ve found the playback to be pretty choppy in general.
You could try the tip that Daniel post lower in these comments.

Hey Ethan! As long as the MID input and output are different IAC busses then it should be okay.
