Q from non off road guy - I have seen others refer to short course set ups with both a traditional bypass shock and coilover mounted to the axle, but having one less 'upper' link but then it has the pan hard bar across. Is the term 'short course' a loose term that just means something other than a traditional 4 link set up?

could be entirely wrong but I think what your referring to is just an alternate way of linking a truck while keeping the stock fuel tank. normally the upper links run right in the way of the stock tank so the way to get around that is with a pan hard bar.
I think (and as I said I could be wrong) "short course setup refers more to the location of the rear shocks in relation to the axle. Like mentioned in the video most "short course setups have the shocks mounting directly to the axle where as the more traditional desert setup with have the rear shocks landing midway to 3/4 down the trailing arms. Both give different motion ratios.

Short course links are typically a little less travel than a traditional link. With a short course the shock/and or coil over mounts directly on or very close to the axle. With a traditional link the shocks mount about half way down the link which multiplies the travel. So short course mounts the shocks on or close to the axle traditional mounts the shocks on the middle of the link.

Also, short course refers to stadium type truck builds vs prerunner/TT style trucks. Short course there are a lot more turns where cornering and being closer to the ground matters, where traditional links shine more in big big bumps like you would see in Baja. So a truck you would also drive on the street would handle better eith a short course setup and have less body roll and be more like an RC car instead of a desert truck. Make sense?
