  • I finally got around to doing this simple yet effective modification. It's almost so simple that I just kept looking over it. It always seemed like a no-brainer that my fog lights should work anytime I want them to, but from the factory I have to have 1.) The key turned on or the truck started, 2.) the headlights on, and 3.) they only work as long as I don't turn my brights on, because, you know, common sense when you turn your brights on you want your fog lights to go out. NOT!! Now I can have my fog lights on anytime I want including when the truck isn't even turned on! YESSS!!
    As mentioned in the video here is the kit I purchased and even though you can get a fuse tap by itself for less, I figured hey I can get 2 extra fuse taps and 3 add-a-circuits plus a whole box of fuses in a box and it comes with a fuse puller...why not?
    Muhize Fuse Kit with taps 120 pcs Amazon $9.98:

    And here's the female quick disconnect style connector just for reference on Amazon in case you need it:

    I like the simplicity of the this mod. Just curious, with this setup you state the fog lights work without the key and won't this drain your battery if they aren't manually turned off? I know at night it's easy enough to see, but what if you bump the button while cleaning the car during the day, you wouldn't necessarily notice them being on.

      @mikeberecochea2020 yes you run the risk of leaving it on and running down the battery. The other option is to run the power for them off an ignition-switched power source so you could still have fogs anytime you want as long as the ignition is turned on, and still not reliant on the headlights being turned on (and not canceled out when high beams are turned on as well). It's a mixed bag just depends on how you want to do it!

    Damnit! I just ordered the "anytime fog" kit from cali raised led a few hours ago. It only cost 10 times this and i gotta add a damn switch.😂

      @@ShawnMartinNCBIRDMAN no worries. I'm trying to see a down side to your version vs the bright box and I'm really not seeing anything. I'm going to confirm this will work on my 2010 Limited 4x4 and then call them and see if I can cancel before they ship it. Great video by the way. To be clear, the tab on the relay being bent over is the 12v supply to the relay correct? It's difficult to hear you when you're standing by the truck.

      @@rupertcornelius8924 once you go to do the mod you'll see which tab gets bent based on the orientation of the relay in my hand. It's easy to tell. Thanks!!

      @@ShawnMartinNCBIRDMAN well unfortunately the fuse box in my 4runner is totally different. I'm not even finding a fuse or relay labeled "fog lights". Oh well. Great idea though. Way to think outside of the box. I'll definitely be sharing your video with my Tacoma friends.

    Nice! I just got a set of the SS3 max fog lights for my 4th gen 4Runner. This is what I've been wondering how to do.
    Now, i wanted to ask, is there a way to connect it so it doesn't draw power when the car is off?

    • @ShawnMartinNCBIRDMAN
      @ShawnMartinNCBIRDMAN  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You can run the tap to a IGN powered relay instead of all time power. There are 2 other common places that people route these to, one is into the little box on the firewall sode of the bigger relay box and the other is through the sode of the box towards the passenger fender I to that smaller fuse area, but I don't know exactly which they ran to, I just know those are some other options. Mine is for ANYTIME, whether the truck is on or not. The mod you might be looking for is anytime the key is turned it gets power so you can run the fogs unlike stock where they turn off when the headlight high beams are on, so at least when you high beam they stay on!

      @Life's short. Live now. I do know on any 2016 and newer Tacoma it's actually much more difficult the only info I've seen on them you have to tap into a harness behind the fuse box and pull connectors and add relays and resistors it looks like a big job. If your fuse box is similar to mine with a fuse and relay separate for fog lights then it seems doable but I don't know the pinout for the relay legs to know if it's the same routing to use the same leg that I tapped into on mine. If that makes sense.

      @@ShawnMartinNCBIRDMAN Yeah. I’ve seen write-ups for the complicated method. Yours looks much easier. I’ll look into it. Thanks for your videos and reply.

      @@lifesshort.livenow.8704 I've seen 3 other versions, one taps into an ignition switched location so the key still controls its power, one was drilled and routed through the right side of the fuse box into the adjoining space and the bare wire end of the tap was jammed down into a power wire, and the other was drilled and routed out of the main fuse box casing behind the case and into the little box sitting behind it for a power source. Way overthought when the fog fuse and fog relay are right next to each other. Too easy.

    Hmm...Mine Tacoma is a 2014, which should be the same (Gen 2). The fuse is still in the same place, but my relay is labeled "AI VALVE". Apparently that is "air injection valve" and doesn't sound like something I would want to jack with. I don't see any other ones labeled "FOG". Any ideas?

    • @ShawnMartinNCBIRDMAN
      @ShawnMartinNCBIRDMAN  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @robkreisel your gen 2.5 has the secondary air pump which mine does not have so that's the relay yours is referring to. I don't know why yours wouldn't have a fog light pickup spot unless yours in a base model SR, which doesn't come factory with fogs like mine did. You can tap into a source that gives power with the ignition being turned on as well, its not technically an "anytime" fog mod since the only time it works is if you have the key turned forward but it can be a nice safety feature if you feel like you might forget to turn the fogs off and drain the battery, but I'm not worried about that. You might need to look at the fuse diagram I linked for your 2014 below and see where you can pull from for yours since it's not the same as mine but it's basically the same concept:

      @@ShawnMartinNCBIRDMAN Mine is a TRD Off Road and came with factory fogs. I just replaced them with Baja Designs Squadron lights. Super bright. I actually used ChatGPT to dig in a bit and think I have some ideas. There is a relay labeled "HEAD" which AI suggested may incorporate the fogs, and another relay labeled "DIM" which is for high beams. Since the fogs typically go out when HBs are on, I bet I could use that relay to bypass that function and keep the fogs on. I kind of like the idea of the fogs only being on if headlights are on, but want them to stay on with HBs if possible. But I don't know the wiring details of either the DIM or HEAD relays.

    • @ShawnMartinNCBIRDMAN
      @ShawnMartinNCBIRDMAN  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @robkreisel it's way harder to figure those out without wiring diagrams. I've done some more complicated aftermarket wiring for things like automatic master switch, and plan to do 4Runner mirrors which is gonna take some doing. I hope you're able to easily figure it out and sorry I don't have a better idea on your wiring setup!
