First Puppy Visit to Our New Border Collie

- This was our first visit to get familiar with 5 week old border collie puppies. We had first, and most difficult, pick. Even the best adjectives are not enough to describe the beauty of these lovely puppies!!!
And it's not just beauty, it's brains too! I had a bumper sticker that my mother put on her car: "It's Hard to Be Humble When You Own A Border Collie!" Though all my BCs are over the Rainbow Bridge-my last 2 passing in '18, I still want another female. Tess had figured out how to tell me my blood sugar was too high or low in '93, even before I was tested in '95. They told me I didn't have Diabetes 2 and that it was foolish to rely on my 3 yr. old dog-BC or otherwise-to tell me I had it. I asked them how else did dogs predict seizures or cancer? They had no answer. Tess turned out to be right and I wished then that I had her registered as a service dog. She also trained Gypsy before she passed away in '08 at 16.2 yrs. He passed in '12 at 17 yrs. She was a busy girl, keeping everyone happy and herding various animals around my backyard as well as ducks and geese at a local park. Tess and her family are probably herding St. Francis around now-just for fun-like she did when she played soccer w/Jack.

My first girl was an Aussie/BC mix (Gem) and then I had Tess, her son (JackBNimble), and his girlfriends (JillComeTmbling After, LittleMissMuffett,LittleBoBeep, and Gypsy Rose Lee) 4-and their puppies. Love the music! The parents of Tess, Gypsy Rose Lee and her cousin, LittleBoPeep,lived on 2 farms (not the same one) and got out to watch their parents herd cows and sheep and interact with us.

@@dylanmagoiofthethalasso4032 My niece and her mother and stepdad-my brother-liked the Nursery Rhyme names. JackBNimble had 2 other girlfriends named JillComeTumblingAfter (she'd get scared during thunderstorms and escape from the yard so they gave her to a lady with a farm) and LittleMissMuffett (she and JackBNimble got out one day when some kid-not my niece-left the gate open. He knew to watch for traffic, but she was just a wee pup then and was hit by a car. He was very unsettled and they decided to try again. Fortunately, it worked out this time and LittleBoPeep lived 13.11 years. Gypsy, Bo Peep's cousin, passed away 8 months later the same year.I think she grieved too. Being last, she had no puppies to train.

I remember the first time when I met a litter of border collie puppies at my uncle's house. The puppies were so happy to see us, and they licked me like crazy! Good times!

I will have a 2.5 month old border collie in 15 days, after 15 days, because it needs to be weaned, we don't get it before weaning because it's a sin.
How could you pick just one! They're a family - so take them all.
+Guy Habeck How could they afford thousands of dollars for all the shots the dogs have to do all at once. Would you be able to afford that?

@@korilakkuma1801 it doesn’t cost thousand of dollars. It cost only $5 for each shot. I paid $15 for my border collie to get 1 shot, 1 deworm and 1 heartworm prevention. It’s not expensive if you get the shot at humane society. They charge $5-10 each only.
@@mathildaapril1175 Yes, I got surprised by seeing thousand of dollars, may be pet food he can say monthly more expense for all the puppies.
The type I would love to have would be from those parents. Such beautiful, traditional Border Collies. Beyond a dream.

Daddy and Mama dog are beautiful too. When JackBNimble saw his babies-4 girls, 2 boys-for the first time, Bo growled at him, then later let him play with them before they were adopted by families wanting to use them for herding or helping special needs children and adults. He gave Gypsy 4 girls, 2 boys a year later. Tess, Bo and Gypsy were both spayed after their 3rd and 1st litters. Gem was spayed from the first.
No way...it is impossible to leave...I would officially have to move in right under that tree. There is nothing like a fluffer waging his tail and a puppy belly is irresistible. I would just feel I am in heaven. They are all adorable...my blood pressure just went down.
Having a pet helps you live longer, especially if it's a dog that leads you to get out and exercise, socialise with others. More people talked to me when I had Tess with me than when I was alone. Fewer people were afraid of my BCs than if I had a more protective dog; but never underestimate a BC either. My Tess wouldn't let let this lady sit next to me at a Kroger grocery one day. I thought she was just jealous. I waited til she went inside the store as I finished my lunch and gave her some water and a little bit of chicken from my sub and we left to go home. The next day, we heard that she'd attacked an elderly lady and stole her handbag. It was the same lady who wanted to sit next to me.
I love that song by Enya. The style sounds just like her. Silky voice.
What beautiful babies! We lost one of ours over a year ago. Our precious Belle a short haired Blue Merle. Unfortunately our breeder passed away and can’t find any close by. I’m dying to find another baby girl our other Border Collie Blue misses her so much.

I appreciate that this is a huge loss for you and one which will likely resonate for a long time. When we lost our previous border, Smudge, the pain went very deep and prompted my video called, "Smudge LaMartina Tribute" @ th-cam.com/video/m3pKS3LYlnI/w-d-xo.html. I have to tell you also about the fact that we acquired a border called "Jack" recently. Last October we were driving through Missouri and a dog, near death at that point, came up to us at an interstate rest area. He'd apparently been wandering for some time and it was difficult to get him to eat or drink. Jack eventually gained strength between now and then as we treated his two types of GI worms, his heart worm and had a tennis ball he swallowed surgically removed. Finally, a few weeks ago the vet said it was ok for him to run and so we hit the trails as I like to do with my other border: th-cam.com/video/wn3VWhExBDI/w-d-xo.html. I wish you well, Maynard, as you cope with your loss.
Lost our sweet Jaxx after 14 years June 2020. It took 6 months before being able to get another, but we did and now have our 5 month old Winston, my first smooth coat border collie since having them the last 40 years. There’s no replacing the last one we’ve lost, but you can benefit your next with your families love for them. They’ll appreciate you and that love for them as Jack did.
@@J1mInOH thanks for the kind words and encouragement. It will take time before we start thinking about a possible replacement..it seems so unfair to expect another dog to be as half as good as Jack was ....he simply was 1 in a million. He was our third child.

I got my border collie from a breeder who sells them for $1,500 because they have eight males and six females and they're all Champion bloodline and the only reason I got my border collie was because he was a runt and the people that did the breeding told me you always said you wanted one well here's one you can have for free you have to take it early because we don't want anybody to know that a runt happened in this litter don't tell anybody where you got it just keep your mouth shut and enjoy your dog and he is the best dog I've ever had in my life his name is Jethro he can take a frisbee out of my hand and six-foot-five and I can reach eight feet tall and he can take it out of my hand if I hold the Frisbee over my head. He sleep right next to me every night goes everywhere I go he is never more than Pi feet away from me at any time unless I throw a frisbee he is the most loyal dog. He is like no other dog I've ever had I can put food out he will not eat it until he wants it. All other jobs will wolf it down immediately no matter if they're hungry or not he will just look at it and walk away and then sometime during the day or go take a few bites here and there and that's just the way he is. He amazes me everyday with subdue and take it that he comes up with. I challenged him everyday by hiding stuff and making puzzles for him and make him think he loves it. When he figures out what I have set up for him he starts barking and jumping in my lap like I did it I did it. People need to understand when you own a border collie you have to exercise then six hours a day you have to make them think you have to challenge them with mind games and physical obstacles or they will not be happy. I have never loved a dog as much as I love this one and I have loved every dog I've ever loved this one is super special. I do not know what I will do if he crosses Over the Rainbow Bridge I will truly be lost. I am on disability and I would never been able to afford to buy one thank God I got him for free and I love him to death. I am 60 years old and he is 7 so he'll probably die in the next 8 years. That would make me 67 years old and not sure if I could allow myself to buy another one because I don't know if I can outlive him and I would not want to have one if I died before he did
I would hate having to choose between border collies and golden retrievers. What a bind!
On a wait list with our local breeder of champion border collies that are not bred for hearing but agility/fetch/obedience/family dogs

I’ve had them since 1980 except for a few short years in the Army. Great video, watching it here with my 5 month old BC that I’m wondering whether he might actually be a BC/Velociraptor cross. Sweet, but he’s fiery!

What a cutie, but she could be so naughty and a brat at times. :) lol I tell people think of the naughtiest kid you ever knew...then multiply by 5 and you have a BC puppy!!

I had a tricolour border collie called Ruby she lived for nearly 17 years, god do I miss her, she came before the wife and daughter, such was the bond..first time I saw the monkey she was on a farm in wales running with the horses and covered in dung but she was so happy with a big smile….I wouldn’t allow her in my new bmw, so se travelled in the wife’s ford ka, god did it stink after lots of growing and two baths, she smelt nice…my wife grew up with border collies me labradors so I wasn’t happy..so took next day off work to bond with the proviso no bond no border collie…wife went to work as school teacher and left, I picked the urchin up and held her high…I said I’m the boss want no crap from you little shit….next thing she smiled and pissed on my face… I couldn’t chastise her, I just gave her a big kiss, and that was the start of the best relationship I’ve ever had..many a memory camping with her in the Lake District in a tent waking up where she had sneaked into bed to get comfy….the times I took her flying with me, the wife hated that…so always sent a pic of Ruby scoffing a burger at an airfield……a true bond in life I will remember till the day I die…rip…ruby

I thought the same thing but you have to be rich and have acres of land, after all they do get big, but they are so darlingly delicious, Gotta love the one with the black spot on it's head, that is the one I would have chosen, I think that is the one they picked. the one with the black stripe across its white leg is cute too, but wow someone needs to keep a better eye on them they are chewing on those branches and could choke on them, that is very dangerous, wow the mother is absolutely gorgeous and so sweet that she would let perfect strangers touch her while she fed those babies

Charley continues to enjoy running, going on our daily walks and traveling with my wife to see her clients as a life coach. In that way he's a working dog, even without sheep.

Great to see pups outside .These days so many breeders keep them locked inside,They need to know outside.
So many breeders have nosy, jealous neighbors who want to get all in your business because a dog barked. I’m actually shocked that anyone is able to breed anymore & it’s a crying shame. Dogs rule!! And as for people, let’s just say I’m not impressed.
Kim Lassiter ikr I had a border collie staffy mix litter 6 of them (1 died) and I set their play fence thing out in the back and my neighbour reported me because I had atleast 7 grown dogs howling and barking all day when in reality I had 6 pups and 2 dogs who don’t even howl
@@kimlassiter8904 I was accused of being a breeder too by one lady on FB. My 1 yr.old Gem was spayed because I had just been accepted into NGC-now UNG-and my parents were going to take care of her so I knew they didn't need any surprises. Tess had 2 planned-but agreed with her former owner, a vet and cow/sheep farmer-pregnancies. The 3rd one was because the vet would not accept the Humane Society 1/2 off coupon I got to get her spayed after the 2nd. Fortunately, her 3rd boyfriend was a healthy BC friend who lived near-and played with Jack. Hers Bo's and Gypsy's babies went to 2 people who needed them for herding, but mostly they went to elderly or special needs kids. A son of Tess went to a little girl with CP who named him Maxwell Smart, Max for short. He helped her balance and walk with her CP and predicted her seizures til he was about 16 then became her friend and helped train a new female to take over his job.
