  • Trials in the UK are currently assessing if dogs could be used to detect prostate cancer at an early stage. One study shows that specially trained dogs can pick up the presence of such cancer in urine samples in 93% of cases. Politician Iain Duncan Smith's wife Betsy was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009, and became involved with the charity Medical Detection Dogs.
In an exclusive film for the Victoria Derbyshire programme, he says he wants to see it rolled out across the UK’s health service.

In 2008 I was awakened by my Rottweiler pawing at my chest and whining. She looked so distressed that I went to find a mirror and check myself over but didn't see anything unusual. However the next day when I checked my breasts I found a lump. The surgeon was amazed that I'd found it at all as it was so 'subtle' she had a hard time finding it. I had surgery to remove the tumour and subsequent treatment and am now in excellent health. If it hadn't been for my dog alerting me so strongly that something was amiss I might not have found it until it was too late.
I had to have her put to sleep while I was undergoing chemo because the discs in her neck ruptured and paralyzed her. We were so close, that was as bad as getting the cancer diagnosis. Everyday I miss her and thank her for saving me while she could.

So many unwanted dogs in this country. I wish we can train them all with this purpose. ❤️🐶

Dogs who haven't been trained but sniff out owners cancers must know the cancer is malignant and harming their owner.

mary shaffer Yes pretty much any dog can detect the subtle smells they just don’t always know that the owner is interested or unaware.

Yes, they say animals can even sense bad people. It’s insane but they are more in tune with their instincts and they’re sense of smell is SO much greater than we can even imagine.

Indeed it's a bit of a mystery, possible that it is related to dogs being one of only a handful of known species to be hosts to transmissible cancers

Agree to TheGreatScott, and want to add that I believe this is why only a few owners get warned by their dogs. You have to habe a special relationship, very close, of course, and such that your dog feels comfortable in telling you their mind. Note that the doctor whose own dog warned her had a whole bunch, but only one showed concern.
I wonder if it's usually older dogs who do that.

I knew about dogs being able to do this. I didn't think I could be even more amazed. I stand corrected. I didn't know that the dogs could detect the problem from another floor in the house, or from the sidelines of a football pitch.
As to the reluctance to accept dogs to do this job. Just tell them that there is a mobile lab available. You don't have to add that the lab is a Labrador Retriever.

Brilliant! Dogs are amazing animals and truly are a person's devoted best friend. We should couple this with immune system modifier treatments that destroy cancer without surgery. *A person has to be absolutely determined to be prescribed it yet it works perfectly*

Animals are amazing and a dogs sense of smell is truly impressive. I had a pain in my breast and my sisters dog completely buried her nose into my chest and kept sniffing that one very specific spot. Freaked me out because I know what a dogs senses are capable of detecting.

Funnily enough, there is actually some research out there now about WuFlu detection dogs. In the study I read, their accuracy ranged from 76% to even 100% depending on the dog. Pretty wild

Dogs have a sense of smell thats 150x stronger than that of a human there is almost no limit to what some breeds can pick up with their nose.

We reliably use dogs all the time for police matters, why wouldn't we use them more commonly for this? It would take an obscene amount of both time and money to develop something that could replicate a dog's sense. I have recently started working in cancer research and will be keeping tabs on this

What is wrong with some of you people?
This is a report about how people, who have a serious illness, can be helped and there are people, who have nothing better to do, then spew filth against BBC, feminists and liberals?
How about, instead of being a lousy excuse of a human being, you go out and try something useful like Dr. Guest and the other people in this piece? It may even make your life more satisfying as a really nice side effect.
