On top of that, the fact that this song was written by Puth, who never knew Walker and just wrote the first version of this song just because it was his job, then put through a hypothetical meat grinder by a bunch of nameless producers, executives, and editors, takes what very little emotion was left in this song out. Paul Walker was my favorite actor. I grew up watching his movies and idolized the man. He was a great guy who not only was cool, but also did lots of humanitarian work and loved to help others. He was my hero and role model. To this day I don't mourn any dead celebrity more than Paul and every anniversary of his death for the past 3 years I've been paying my respects. Most people fake sympathy for a fallen celebrity, pretend to be sad for maybe a week at best and then everyone moves on. That's not how I remember Paul's legacy. I will never forget Paul Walker and the impact he had on my life. I cried at the end of Furious 7 and I cry every anniversary of his death. He will never be forgotten in my heart.
You sound like me and the death of Chester Bennington. I wasn't Linkin Park's biggest fan and being brutally honest, I don't even know the names of the other members aside from Mike Shinoda. But I loved their music regardless, even as everyone else drifted away from them because they no longer sounded like their first two albums. They were the one group I always kept up with for when they released something new. As Chester wrote the song "One More Light" about a friend who committed suicide the same year he took his own, I was very angry he would be such a hypocrite. The song is about valuing your life and how you think others won't miss you when you're gone but that's absolutely not true. I still cry when I hear that song. It took me a long time to even be able to listen to it at all. I switched stations or listened to silence if it came on the radio. I've probably made it through perhaps two times without sobbing. Maybe I didn't know everything about his life and work but I definitely feel his absence.

It's hard. Every time I revisit this song, I can see how much of a cash grab tribute it really was and its bland pop sound with a slap of rap on top of it didn't help. But it still gets me almost every time I play the chorus simply because literally right before the movie came out one of my friends was killed in a car crash. We were both still in high school and it just so happened that Walker died during the same time. The song brings me back to the moment where I remember how human we all are even if it sounds like every other industry-made song that makes it way to the top somehow.
The Fast and the Furious movies aren't all shit. Especially once you get to the more recent ones, they realize exactly how rediculous they are and embrace it, while wearing a big heart all the same and choosing to be sincere with letting the audience love the characters. It's like Lasanga, it's comfort movies that are going to satify. and make you not regret eating it.

In order to earn some money while in Seattle, the cast members had to film and edit an anti-"unaliving" (ugh) PSA that needed to feature the song "Jumper". That episode burned the song into my brain. It was then released as a single 7 months later and hasn't left radio since. So it too was used in a commercial, though it was advertising staying alive instead of a tablet.
I played this song at my brothers funeral because he and his friends loved the movies, so it fit. That's the only reason I got attached to it. Before that it was hammered into every day radio and playlists until I couldn't stand it.
I don't care that much about the FF movies, and I was a little sad about Paul Walker dying but not like, super torn up or anything. But god damn, watching that clip from the end of the movie when I first watched the video clip, it fucked me up. Okay, so... I like this song. Okay, put the pitchforks and torches away and hear me out. I do the school musicals, and it's tradition to have everyone circle up and sway and sing it together during the cast party. It's the cast and crew's final send-off to the seniors. It's not that the song is good, it's that it reminds me of all of the seniors that I looked up to. So I'm not the best source on if it's good or not, it's more of a guilty pleasure if anything.
you know what a good goodbye song is? for billy by highly suspect. its meant to be a celebration of their friend’s life so it’s more of an upbeat song than this one but it’s still great. it’s probably my favourite song from their boy who died wolf album. another great grief project is mike shinoda’s album post traumatic, which is about processing the grief of losing his friend (chester) to suicide. it’s a heart wrenching album, i can only listen to it once in a while but it’s a great album

One AMAZING example of a song that is made for a movie and centers around death is Kate Bush's "This Woman's Work". Like, the first time I heard it I wanted to cry. Sure, it's not about a real person's death, but at least it makes me feel something and I don't hear in a commercial all the time. Kate is also amazing at writing outside of herself (most of her songs are from someone else's perspective) and Charlie Puth isn't.

It's hard. Every time I revisit this song, I can see how much of a cash grab tribute it really was and its bland pop sound with a slap of rap on top of it didn't help. But it still gets me almost every time I play the chorus simply because literally right before the movie came out one of my friends was killed in a car crash. We were both still in high school and it just so happened that Walker died during the same time. The song brings me back to the moment where I remember how human we all are even if it sounds like every other industry-made song that makes it way to the top somehow.

The Fast and the Furious movies aren't all shit. Especially once you get to the more recent ones, they realize exactly how rediculous they are and embrace it, while wearing a big heart all the same and choosing to be sincere with letting the audience love the characters.
It's like Lasanga, it's comfort movies that are going to satify. and make you not regret eating it.

Funnily enough, my first exposure to "Jumper" came from an episode of MTV's Road Rules 5 that aired back in January 1998. In order to earn some money while in Seattle, the cast members had to film and edit an anti-"unaliving" (ugh) PSA that needed to feature the song "Jumper". That episode burned the song into my brain. It was then released as a single 7 months later and hasn't left radio since.
So it too was used in a commercial, though it was advertising staying alive instead of a tablet.
I played this song at my brothers funeral because he and his friends loved the movies, so it fit. That's the only reason I got attached to it. Before that it was hammered into every day radio and playlists until I couldn't stand it.
I don't care that much about the FF movies, and I was a little sad about Paul Walker dying but not like, super torn up or anything. But god damn, watching that clip from the end of the movie when I first watched the video clip, it fucked me up. I dunno what it was, maybe the visuals reminding me that above all else, Paul Walker was Vin Diesels best friend, and that for him, all of this was to say goodbye to his dearest friend, I dunno man, it just got the water works going.

Okay, so... I like this song.
Okay, put the pitchforks and torches away and hear me out. I do the school musicals, and it's tradition to have everyone circle up and sway and sing it together during the cast party. It's the cast and crew's final send-off to the seniors. It's not that the song is good, it's that it reminds me of all of the seniors that I looked up to. So I'm not the best source on if it's good or not, it's more of a guilty pleasure if anything.
you know what a good goodbye song is? for billy by highly suspect. its meant to be a celebration of their friend’s life so it’s more of an upbeat song than this one but it’s still great. it’s probably my favourite song from their boy who died wolf album.
another great grief project is mike shinoda’s album post traumatic, which is about processing the grief of losing his friend (chester) to suicide. it’s a heart wrenching album, i can only listen to it once in a while but it’s a great album

If you just listen to Charlie's part, you wouldn't know it was supposed to be a tribute to Paul Walker, because it's so bland and generic it can be slotted into any song about death and make as much sense. Wiz's part I the closest this song comes to a Paul Walker tribute.

I didn't like this song when it came out, either. But since I had to do a video memorial for my uncle who passed away, this was one of the songs that was used and it made me cry anyway. Without Wiz Khalifa on the track massively improved it. On the "One Sweet Day" song, I can't get through it without crying. T^T As for the song "Airplanes," I like to think of it as a time during war. It seems to give that vibe. But noooooo... being a rapper is _hard_.

I actually cried listening to this song, mainly because the visuals of the tribute to Paul Walker, I admit, it loses value with Wiz and Charlie surrounded by Dodge's product line
I can understand why the rest of the film seems so different. Paul died midway through filming. According to the director, a completely different ending was planned,but the real life events caused them to retcon the ending. That's why it's so different

One AMAZING example of a song that is made for a movie and centers around death is Kate Bush's "This Woman's Work". Like, the first time I heard it I wanted to cry. Sure, it's not about a real person's death, but at least it makes me feel something and I don't hear in a commercial all the time. Kate is also amazing at writing outside of herself (most of her songs are from someone else's perspective) and Charlie Puth isn't.

While I do agree with this review, the *hard* 90s bias kinda saps some credibility from it. I feel like it comes across a bit too much as some bitter 90s kid complaining about "music these days," which for me ruined an otherwise salient critique. However a counter argument to this could be that there's a lack of recent similar examples to compare this song to, so there's that.
