I have to admit that Tirek scared me as a kid, i mean he threatend to decapitate a kid! Also, fun fact: In the Swedish dub Megan was named Mimmi, Firefly was named Silver and Applejack, Isabella.
Maybe in future a new Gen of MLP could bring back the Human charecters interacting with ponies again but ofcourse being more like G4 and being more action packed like this ^^.
Gotta be honest I myself never seen g1-3 but seeing this video inspired me to watch the og my little pony to see how these ponies got to where they are right now thanks for the inspiration Lightning bliss and DRWolf!
Oh, man. Loved this look back on this crazy thing. I remember seeing this when it first came out (yikes, dating myself there), and being terrified of Scorpan, let alone Tirac, but insisting I wanted to see it for the Ponies. They got away with some crazy-dark stuff in cartoons back then, even in the shows produced for girls. Looking back at it now, I agree that there's a lot of wacky, breakneck pacing and it has its flaws, but I imagine that for a kid, that kind of pace was needed to keep them engaged and quickly set up the plot and get the action rolling. I feel like that was just a hallmark of 80s and early 90s cartoons in a nutshell. Great review, thanks for the trip down memory lane! It'd be cool to see some more of these old school reviews, if you get the chance. I'd love to see your review of something like the original MLP movie.
The Brother-Sister relationship between Dr. Wolf and Lighting Bliss is truly enjoyable and I loved this review where it all began. Firefly is a daredevil than Rainbow Dash. And Scorpan is a badass to save and protect Spike. I would love to see them on *MLP G5.* BRING G1 OGs!
gosh i remember watching that. honestly i grew up with G3 and while G3 is more of "no fighting" and no conflict drama its like a eh maybe a slice of life like "chill". [plus im still like how the pegasai and earth ponies never knew eachother existed but ey]. I have watched the G1 film before and i had watched G1s episodes [or is it G2?] and those episodes are..interesting and have alot of drama and such depending what episode your watching, and introduce more creatures in it. like the sunstone episodes with the witches, and the episode i remember the most was when these goons try turning the ponies home into glass. im being hit with nostalgia with this holy moly-
Woohooo a review of my favorite episode of G1 of MLP!!!!! ^_^ By the way when the rainbow of light was used to defeat tirek and in the end destroy him, could that mean, in a matter of speaking, Be the actual holder of the elements of harmony? One little thing containing a rainbow that is small at first but was unleashed as a huge wave of Magical power to destroy evil? O_O
You know I have only seen one episode in g3 and I made sure never to go back and watch the rest this was before I was a bronie but after this one I might watch this myself once I have free time
Tirek's Rainbow of Darkness. you know, the one you learned about in school: Seal_brown , Umber, Xanadu, Onyx, Navy_blue, Indigo, and Taupe -CR (FamiliarFacesChannel)
There is actually a pink dragon character from the Spyro video games that is named Ember. She appeared in 'Sypro: A Hero's Tail'. One might say that she was Spyro's original girlfriend before Cynder came along. Spyro kinda shies from her overzealous approach somewhat, though, so she is basically the 'Amy Rose' of the Spyro series.
It IS Ember. Both these reviewers just misheard it. Ember & Amber DO sound alike. Also keep in mind that audio in the 80’s, while good compared to audio in the 20’s - 50’s, DID still have it’s problems compared to audio of today’s world.
I remember watching G1 pilot episode when I was little. It was recorded by my parents at the time, and my big sister seemed to have the dolls at that time (Most of them which still are in the attic even today). But to be honest, the names in the swedish-dubbed version were different at the time. Instead of Applejack being named Applejack, she was named Isabella, and even Firefly was instead named Silver (What??). Weird I know, but at that time the translator thought it would be hard to remember the original names and decided to experiment a little to give them suitable names. But man was it awesome to see the G1 Tirac again in this one, since the newer generations like Nowacking, ACRacebest and others need to understand that Twilight's Kingdom episode DID actually bring back Tirac as Tirek in that two-part episode. It is a must for the reaction crew to do a reaction to the G1 pilot to give them some perspective of knowledge here. All in all, a pretty good review once again, Bliss and Wolf. Hope to see more of you in the future. :-D P.S. for Dr Wolf: Shoo be-doo sho-shoo be-doo!
As a 90s kid, I remember renting this and the movie over and over again and even went and bought the original complete series dvd set for G1. I adored it so much as a kid and I still watch them even as an adult. I saw noticeable flaws and quirks Gen 1 had but still loved it all. This special was amazing to watch even with the errors you pointed out during your review and yes DR Wolf...…………..I have that Shoo Be Doo song stuck in my head and it has never left my mind. I'd like to say that Gen 1 will always be one of my favorite gens of MLP much like FiM and it was this cartoon and Rainbow Brite which will always have special places in my heart forever.
I grew up with the the VHS of this special so when the season 4 finale came out and I heard Lord Tirek I was like WHAAAATTT????!!!!!!!! 😱🤯🤩. Admittedly, when I first saw episodes 1&2 of G4 I couldn’t help but think the plot was very similar to this g1 special: villain with the goal of night that never ends. A character that is new to the area and key to defeating the villain, going through a forest to get to a castle, a rainbow defeats the villain, crossing turbulent water with the help of sea creatures, not to mention Spike and AJ are almost carbon copies of each other visually. Yeah, I was scratching my head to say the least. Add to all that the fact that I came across G4 because I was looking for this special on TH-cam! 😆
4:17 someone should have warned the doc about the 80s it was the dark times for children shows every kid's show and movie had to be at least little dark.
doc: did you know this was the same animation team for dungeons and dragons? Lightning bliss is shocked And then she says, woah woah woah are you telling me that I was addicted to dungeons and dragons before firebrand brought me into those season she years later!? For comedic timing, firebrand comes in out of nowhere singing,"what can I say except you're welcome?" That was perfect comedy I wasn't expecting that
nice review lightning and doc, it was interesting to see how G1 cast of characters are before G4 like tirek and scorpan are brothers in G4. Just seen few like applejack and twilight look so different or seen spike is helping the villeins it was shock to see just how spike once started out as villein and nice artwork at the end of video by the way, for me it would have been nice to see scorpan in last season of mlp but maybe he might show up in G5 as hero or walk on roll character something along those lines
Thanks for reminding me, I need to catch up with Dr Wolf's DnD sessions... which will take forever with my luck. (I also think it'd be cool if you all end up doing an MLP based DND session someday in the future. Of course, it may take a few years at best.)
I grew up in the late 80s-ealy 90s and my family would record any cartoons for me and my siblings to watch. I remember seeing g1 mlp and at my young age I would watch it not knowing or caring that it was for little girls. It was because of g1 mlp, that I gave g4 mlp a watch and I'm glad I did.
I am curious if Josh ever put the lines together when this video was in script writing process and it made him decide to take Bliss in more Dungeons and Dragons all thanks to MLP.
Now I picture them working on a collab, when a third party, from off camera, declares "Oh, How cute and adorable!" Bliss eyetwitches, preparing to let loose the fury, but whomever that 3rd person is rushes past to abruptly hug up Wolf.
G1 Scorpan was a human prince turned into a gargoyle by the evil Lord Tirac. G4 versions of these characters have a slight change in relationship to being actually brothers but their titles are still the same Lord Tirek and Prince Scorpan.
Fun Fact for the animation, I beleive the studio behind it was Toei Animation, or Toei Doga as they were called back in the 80s The same company who animated: Dragonball, Sailor Moon, One Piece, and for MLPs sibling series ...Transformers G1 Also another fun fact G1 Tirek is voiced by the same person who narrates the G1 Transformers series
Whenever I get bored. I watch Rescue at Midnight castle, or My Little Pony Tales. I like all the older MLP. The original has bad things happen, epic battle scenes and characters to give kids nightmares. With just a hint of BUY OUR TOYS. The characters are fun, though the pace is fast, it's pretty fun to watch. My Little Pony Tales actually has kid characters (maybe around 10 or 12) And the plot honestly is just a day in the life for kids. It includes school, bullies, just things kids could relate too. And the lessons in it are honestly pretty good. And I really don't think there's too many "BUY OUR TOYS" in it, if there even is any at all. G3. Wow. The show is for sure meant for a pretty young audience. It also has a pretty strong "BUY OUR TOYS" and nothing bad really happens, well, not like G1 or G4 that is. I think all the older generations are pretty interesting, some better than others, but in the end, I love all of them!
I also loved this episode I saw when it aired and fell in love with mlp. It was odd for me a briny before we were a thing. I must ask what did you think of the witches and the smuzz, or the g1 flutter poneies
Admit it doctor wolf, you like the mermaids. Also my most emorable G1 episodes are: The prince & the ponies (ponys+newborns are invited to a sleepover but it turns out its a trap so the babies can be enslaved by the usurping maids entitled daughhter) the wannabe dragon slayer (the ponys try to help a bumbling boy who wants to be a knight but keeps screwing up) and escape from katrina (ponys discover a evil tempered sorceress that has enslaved an entire race to feed her potion addiction)
I saw this review a while back but I had to watch it again, I love this review, great video Lightning Bliss DRWolf001 😊 (imagine if someone remade Escape from the 'Midnight Castle' animation in the G4 art style or perhaps in G5's but with the original audio?)
It's actually Posey who is the inspiration for Fluttershy in G4. BTW pretty fun fact about the voice of Posey she's voiced by I kid you not Nancy Cartwright the voice of Bart Simpson. And Russi Taylor RIP also did voices in G1 MLP.
This special was part of my childhood too, but the message I took from it wasn't that even a small rainbow could do great things, it was that sometimes someone could really be a good guy despite looking scary. I loved seeing Dr. Wolf's reactions to the insane stuff that I just calmly accepted as a kid. Could you guys do "Escape from Catrina" (and "MLP: The Movie") next?
You guys should review the ten part special "The End of Flutter Valley." Now that's an.... interesting special. Also, I loved G3 as a kid and I still do. Gen 3.5 is the one you don't wanna touch.
Now I know why Shoo-Bee-Doo, Shoo-Shoo Bee Doo was so popular. They are outright so catchy, vibrant and fun. Couple with bright flashy colour of the video, it is sure addicting despite the whole scene is quite jarring. Come to think of it, the Smile song sang by Pinkie Pie back in Season 2 has some similar elements indeed.
The episode of the D&D cartoon is called Cave of the Faerie Dragons, Lightning Bliss. It can be viewed on wcostream dot com. Though do take note that the users mislabeled the episodes so it'll be on "The Winds of Darkness". I also recommend watching the final episode "Requiem" on TH-cam because someone made an impressive fan made production of it as well as give it an additional piece at the end of the episode.
G1 was quite popular in the UK, i means theres a song called "whos a sillly pony, applejack" yes the MLP stories were on cerssett tape. I was between G1 and G2 when i was a child. Even remember having G1 on VHS since G2 did not have a series (if you don't count pony tales)
7:00 Note this As an Animation fan this was the entire reason i would watch this girls show. THE ONLY REASON AS A BOY i would watch it. An its because i loved Venger`s voice. I literally want a Skyrim version of Venger. This is why after Season 2 of D&D i wanted more!
Dr. Wolf just pulled off a Looney Tunes joke where the character pop out of the TV, Computer or any other entertainment set that cartoon character pop out of!
It was so great to see where the mlp universe first started I personally am growing up on the G4 mlp show and am very excited to see G5 mlp though I am sad to see G4 mlp go
Glad I waited, by the way Bliss I have Ember Pony with the Star cutie mark. And I did have the story tape too, I still love her. I was waiting for the Rainbow of Light in G4 and I was not surprised. The truth is the G1 series was my childhood favorite and my mom was a bigger fan than me and SHE was the adult. I still love MLP and also suggestion, LAST UNICORN! You have to, it's part of mine and your childhood.
one interesting thing is that Scorpan's face turn doesn't come out of nowhere, as is typical of the trope, but instead there are LOTS of hints of him being a good guy (such as him saving megan and trying to warn her away, as well as how he acts towards spike) and even his initial scene could be him trying to subtly warn the ponies abotu what's going on, or at very least put on a false persona, but that could jsut be me reading too deeply. If there's one thign G1 did better than G4 in this one instance, it was Scorpan's redemption compared to CERTAIN redemptions, but that's just MY hot take.
It took Years for me to sit and watch this Entire MLP Special, and I honestly wish I had done so sooner. Even with some Glaring flaws, there's actually a lot to enjoy. I really miss how kid's shows weren't afraid to get scary :)

Spike falls in with a band of sociopaths running a protection racket? Check.
Characters turned into glass or frozen in ice? Check.
Megan nearly falls into lava? Check.
And one _Tales_ short actually included an imagine spot of a Donner party!
BTW, I'm certain that in "The Revolt of Paradise Estate" Beezen was looking for the Flash Stone, not realizing that the search would be fruitless.
This was a great review Blissy. I definitely wouldn’t seeing a lot more G1 reviews for My Little Pony. This was actually fun.
A truly enjoyable and superb review Blissy and Doc i love it.
The one Pony you called Amber is actually named Ember. I know this because I’m the original Brony. I grew up with Gen 1.
Gotta be honest I myself never seen g1-3 but seeing this video inspired me to watch the og my little pony to see how these ponies got to where they are right now thanks for the inspiration Lightning bliss and DRWolf!
Wow, I'm pleasantly surprised! Might wanna give it a watch too! Good review Blissy and Doc!
I have watched the G1 film before and i had watched G1s episodes [or is it G2?] and those episodes are..interesting and have alot of drama and such depending what episode your watching, and introduce more creatures in it. like the sunstone episodes with the witches, and the episode i remember the most was when these goons try turning the ponies home into glass. im being hit with nostalgia with this holy moly-
I actually like G1 despite some moments
Also, you didn't mention Tirek would behead Spike?
To quote Doug “Like seriously how did we get a TV-Y out of this?!?”
Me:*Sees G3*
Also Me:*Grabs Flamethrower* Im about to end this generations career
lol
My sister got g3 pony toys years ago that came with a DVD of the g3 show. I can't say I was thrilled with it.
12:18
Those eyes look exactly like what I’d expect to happen when Doc somehow snaps
When the sea pony’s appear and start singing
Dr wolf- internally screaming
Bliss- joins in with the song
You know I have only seen one episode in g3 and I made sure never to go back and watch the rest this was before I was a bronie but after this one I might watch this myself once I have free time
Tirek's Rainbow of Darkness. you know, the one you learned about in school:
Seal_brown
, Umber, Xanadu, Onyx, Navy_blue, Indigo, and Taupe
-CR (FamiliarFacesChannel)
10:29
"DIE AQUATIC SPAWN OF EVIL!!"
-Silver Quill, with a Machine Gun, controlled by King Sombra.
I laugh my paws off
I thought the pony was being called _Ember_ , not _Amber_ ... and Ember is also a very fitting dragon name.
Dragon lord Ember anyone?
This was one of my absolute favorite movies to watch as a child. I couldn't get enough of it.
Boi... I need my Boiled Toast... And my Fresh WEED 👍 BTW Happy Eggster! 🐣 (Easter)
P.S. for Dr Wolf: Shoo be-doo sho-shoo be-doo!
Legend says Dr.W0lf still has the sea pony song stuck in his head.
*Shoo Be Do Be Do*
10:29 Enter one of Silver Quill's worst nightmares: the G-1 Sea-pony song. For evidence, I suggest watching the the video "After the Fact: Bats!".
There are so many hilarious moments in this review! I know this is a relatively old video, but KEEP IT UP! 👍🏼
Don't deny your happiness, Blissy. Whenever your schedule isn't disturbed, you enjoy time with your friends.
6:12
Come on Lightning Bliss we were both there. That is the universal theme of all 80's cartoons.
Funny how G1 Tirek sounds like the narrator from G1 Transformers.
I also believe that the narrator from the original Voltron was the voice for the original Optimus Prime, although I've yet to research that.
SAME VA
4:17 someone should have warned the doc about the 80s it was the dark times for children shows every kid's show and movie had to be at least little dark.
You wanna talk about a theme song that will never leave the theme song for the 1994 fantastic 4 cartoon. It will never leave my head.
I think the show is awful but I have to admit that I like the theme song.
doc: did you know this was the same animation team for dungeons and dragons?
Lightning bliss is shocked
And then she says, woah woah woah are you telling me that I was addicted to dungeons and dragons before firebrand brought me into those season she years later!?
For comedic timing, firebrand comes in out of nowhere singing,"what can I say except you're welcome?" That was perfect comedy I wasn't expecting that
Poor doc had a hard time keeping up with this one
Hey Blissy, I was curious if you remember the Care Bears movie that had a villain also defeated by a rainbow, but it was called the Care Bear Stare.
nice review lightning and doc, it was interesting to see how G1 cast of characters are before G4 like tirek and scorpan are brothers in G4.
I would love to see a review of Dungon and dragon with Josh or Silverquile heck why not both..
This is amazing. No other words, it's amazing.
I used to watch “escape from flutter Wally” at a friends house growing up. Love that special ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thanks for reminding me, I need to catch up with Dr Wolf's DnD sessions... which will take forever with my luck. (I also think it'd be cool if you all end up doing an MLP based DND session someday in the future. Of course, it may take a few years at best.)
4:54- Huh. I did not expect to see that meme on Dr. Wolf. Interesting.
God this brings back memories! I'm 26 years old and I feel old just watching that show and I still love it!
I am curious if Josh ever put the lines together when this video was in script writing process and it made him decide to take Bliss in more Dungeons and Dragons all thanks to MLP.
I often forget how teeny Dr. Wolf is.
Now I picture them working on a collab, when a third party, from off camera, declares "Oh, How cute and adorable!" Bliss eyetwitches, preparing to let loose the fury, but whomever that 3rd person is rushes past to abruptly hug up Wolf.
One of my favorites was the "Bright Lights" special, and the "Somnabula" multi-episode.
Hahaha... It will be far more than weeks Doc. I have been trying to get that song out of my head for YEARS!
G1 Scorpan was a human prince turned into a gargoyle by the evil Lord Tirac. G4 versions of these characters have a slight change in relationship to being actually brothers but their titles are still the same Lord Tirek and Prince Scorpan.
Fun Fact for the animation, I beleive the studio behind it was Toei Animation, or Toei Doga as they were called back in the 80s
The same company who animated: Dragonball, Sailor Moon, One Piece, and for MLPs sibling series ...Transformers G1
Also another fun fact G1 Tirek is voiced by the same person who narrates the G1 Transformers series
G1 is my favorite gen of all the cartoons. It had some of the best villains the series ever seen.
Amazing review!!
May 'Ah mention that Megan William's "Escape from midnight castle" design likely served inspiration for Gen 4 & EqG's Applejack?
While I was watching this, I got an ad that was literally a full episode of MLP gen 4, I didn't even know that was possible
7:56
Uh oh....Doc is getting psychological again. Brace yourselves everyone.
Well i did had a wonderful time watching this review.
and i hope that song as well the Duck Tails theme song don't get stuck in my head.
it was fun.
I always liked D&D even when I was 4 and didn’t know until years later. Now that I’m older, I’m a dungeon master of my own stories, Mwah hahaha!!
Great video I love your content that makes me smile and don’t forget to take breaks I love your channel because it always makes me smile
It's fun watching TH-camrs collaborate to review media.
It was so great to see where the mlp universe first started I personally am growing up on the G4 mlp show and am very excited to see G5 mlp though I am sad to see G4 mlp go
This was a special I would watch at my babysitters house when I was little.
I find this MLP G1 special a really fun for the past pony fans and future pony fans, like us, it’s like me watching All New Popeye episodes
