These scrappage schemes have a lot to answer for! Parts availability for some 90s stuff is an issue for some and just the loss of so many 90s cars off our roads is disgraceful. Back in the 90's when I was still living in the Philippines, I owned a Kia Pride. One time I had 5 passengers and food. We were going to a party. Sudden downpour and Flash flood everywhere. My Kia never stalled even thru 2 feet of water. A lot of bigger,more expensive cars stalled. I was praying the whole time. Six people with food made it to the party. 😅🤣
I think the cheaper ranges of cars are important in a collecting sense because of the social history that goes with them. I'd be more inclined to go for a poverty-spec model because they're more rare. Everyone goes for the top-spec sporty models but the base model cars are practically disposable and rarely get the necessary care and attention needed for them to survive. This makes them an unusual sight on the road and at car shows and I like something a bit different. Great vid as always!
Just catching up with your reviews and impressed. I bought a Kia Pride in 1996 brand new and loved it - 5 door in Kingfisher green and it came new with TSW alloys (dealer fitted ) - I'd have another one - might have a trip to Iran 😆

idriveaclassic tell me about it I have 2 Mk2 Cavaliers and a MK3 and like you say the tax is just to much, but I just love the hobby so it’s what I have to pay at the end of the day. Cars is an expensive hobby at the best of times. I had one of these 1.3 lx from late 94 to late 96 bought pre registered on delivery miles.It was the last of the carburettor models after that they went to fuel injection.For the money it was superbly built and specced and a delight to drive with its 5 speed box and perky engine.It compared well to base metro or fiesta and was totally reliable over the 32k mls covered in the 2 year period.Traded it in for a larger car but remember it fondly and can understand the positive reaction that Steph is expressing towards this car.
Love the video. It’s interesting to hear a young persons take on ‘old’ cars. I remember these when new. To be honest they were ridiculed and a bit tinny. It’s great this example has survived. With young people like yourselves automotive history will stay alive. Well done!
What an interesting little motor, I remember seeing these all the time (mostly the Mazda 121), along with the original Micra and 205s, they've all but fizzled out. It's great to see them again. Fab vid as always Steph, very informative :D
Loved this video review Steph (as always) but this one was also a bit personal. My grandmother owned one of these Ford Festiva badged cars in Australia as a used car for 11 years. When she bought the car it had approximately 107,XXX km and it did the job very reliably until 431XXX km when my grandmother was t-boned turning into her street on the way back from the shops. She was alright but the car was written off. It is the only car she seriously wants again but they are very few and far between now so it might be a long hunt for one...It was very interesting seeing the differences between your feature car and my grandmother's one too!

I owned a 1999 pride and had it for 9 years, loved it to bits.. Only got rid of it because my kids grew up and we couldn't all get in it. I got a Fiat Marea 110 jtd Weekend which I have had for 10 years and still own :) thats is a rare car now! Unfortunately it failed MOT this year so I got a Honda Jazz and think its a great car, but one day want to get Marea on the road again.. I Got the Kia brand new straight out of the show room with 5 miles on it, still wish I had it as always started what ever the weather was like etc.. Love the Vid
I am an English guy living in General Santos Philippines, there are many of these still in good condition and in daily use. A saloon version was also available. There is another Kia which was not sold in the UK that looks similar to a 90s Toyota Corolla. I do not know the model as all the ones I have seen are owned by younger drivers and are modified. Most of the older vehicles still running in the Philippines are Kia's.

You confirmed something I have wondered about for a long time. Many years ago I was looking for a used small car to buy with an open mind. I would have a good look at them to just see how roomy they were and the Kia pride was a model I considered as a possibility. One day I saw one parked so I stopped to look around it. I was surprised to see it was an automatic. Then as I walked around it, I spotted the familiar blue oval Ford badge on the front instead of Kia. I know it was not sold as a Ford here or as an automatic. Now you have said it was sold as a Ford in America, it all makes sense. Obviously someone had imported it from the USA, hence the auto box.

This video brought back many great memories, especially seeing the fabric on the door cards. Would love to see you review a MK1 Fiat Punto, but maybe that's too modern being a 1993 car (?). I bought my first Festiva (1993 model) back in 2008 when our fuel prices were reaching the highest ever here in the US at the time. That car has been gone for several years now but I currently have two more. One I picked up over last Christmas and is a completely rust free Florida survivor with 304,000 miles (Amazing the difference in driving environment between the US and UK) and cold AC, and I use it as a summer daily driver. The other is a bit more rough but I've turned it into a budget circuit racing car and is featured in my channel.
Yes you pronounced Festiva correctly! The Ford Festiva was only available as a 3 door and actually saw a red Festiva L being driven by an original owner a few days ago.
My wife had a 1.3 LX 3 door from new on a "K" plate. Mica blue metallic with white walls (reflecting USA being a big mkt for them?). Brilliant little car, really quite powerful - the engine was actually something like 1324cc when most 1.3's are slightly under 1300cc. Really well built & nicely finished inside, lovely comfy seats. Took it up to Orkney loaded with camping gear, brilliant economy even fully laden - got nearly 60mpg!. When buying it she had considered the Micra 1.2 (she had a 1.0 Micra at the time) - nice car but not as well equipped, slower & a lot dearer - no brainer! You mentioned Iranian built ones, in Syria they were prolific, nearly all yellow as used heavily as Taxi's in 4 door booted form (UK only ever got the h/back).

'Pride comes before a fall'. I remember when these came out they had whitewall tyres. I have a weird admiration for the bug-eyed Shuma II that was sold by Kia in the late 1990s/early 2000s.
I nearly bought a Shuma a few years ago for, yes, you read correctly, hillclimbing and sprinting!! (wanted something utterly obscure!). I ended up in a Mk1 Rio which was as weird...
Kia Pride is also called people car in the Philippines 🇵🇭! They also use Hatchback and Sedan in Taxi Cab 🚕 in 90s until early 2010s, because of the popularity many young generations modified or Customized today it's easy to maintain a Kia Pride
I worked at a Kia main dealer at the time of the Pride they were incredible reliable never had to do any warranty work on them. When the 1.3mpi version come out Kia never changed the claimed BHP from the carb model of 64bhp but we could tell they had more power so tested one and found it had 76BHP. We also tested the 0-60 claimed was 11.2 but we had no problem getting a 9.8. These figures don't look that exciting these days but in a car that only weighed 800kg it was pretty lively ... oh for the nerds it works out as 95bhp per ton

I actually own a 1990 Ford Festiva it's a wonderful and reliable little car. Kia also produced the Ford Aspire maybe you can do a video on it but I'm not quite sure what it was called over there
My wife got a 1993 pride as a cheap runaround in 2008. It was a white 1.3 lx K515LNG. It had a carburettor and catalyst! A great little car it was called into front line service and was used on a Holiday from Suffolk to Wales and didn't miss a beat. It circumvented the M25, went up to Yorkshire and just went on and on. Lovely to drive good comfy velour seats peppy little engine it was great. Unfortunately terminal underside rust killed it off. One of the best things it had was the remote boot release next to the drivers door such a good feature. I did get used to the indicators being on the other side eventually. Great review glad you liked the pride. The UK pimp my ride did a phase one kia pride on their programme I wonder if its still about...

Not bad little cars. There used to be lots of Ford Festivas & Mazda 121s on the road in NZ, but they have mostly disappeared. I have a 91 Festiva & am finding it a struggle to get some parts now
You're getting to drive some neat classics Steph. Last Sunday, I went round the ring at Wragby show in Brad's Moggie. I recorded it incar on my phone, and his brother filmed from the ringside. For some reason I can't get the video off my phone. And, had to mute some of the audio because of a band. However it's still worth a look, and there's a good shot of it. That's his last show this year, and it's soon going to get some work done.
these where the Mazda 121 and Ford Festiva in Australia, in fact, the update Kia was was very popular in this part of the world as the Ford Festiva, the update ran until about 2000, when Ford Asia Pacific was trying to find a small car to replace the yen fuelled Laser (Mazda 323) they tried to sell the Euro Ford KA before finally giving us the MK 4 Fiesta in 2004
My first car was a Kia pride, was a great little runaround! I sold it when I went to uni but saw it driving around still until a few years ago! Think it must have been scrapped now as a number plate search doesn’t bring anything up.
Here in Oz we had this one as the Mazda 121 first, then as the Ford Festiva, but that was before any Kia had ever been sold here. From ‘94 I owned the next model of 121 which had the same gear stick in that Kia Pride - Mazda used exactly the same gearstick in 121s right through until the early 2000s! Haha
I first saw the Kia’s round about 1991, I think they were sold along side the SAO Penza which it self was a rebadged Mazda 323 from a previous generation.

Maybe some other time you want to make a video about the Vauxhall Zafira, that car is rebadged (original Opel Zafira) as Vauxhall, Holden Zafira, Chevrolet Zafira and even as a Subaru Traviq! I think the oldest version of this car is the 1986 Ford Festiva Canvas Top from Japan. I have a red 1988 Festiva 3 door 5 speed manual and my grandma has a light green 1993 Festiva 3 door 3 speed automatic. They're both great cars but the 1988 feels more solid in terms of looks and quality and the 1993 drives a lot better because it's fuel injected.
The speedometer is marked "unleaded fuel only" due to that being the law in the only other country that would tolerate a speedo that reads in miles. Also, Mazda and Ford were so conjoined they were only technically different companies at the time. Whichever the badge, all of these cars exported to Japan or the West were stamped and assembled at the Gwangmyeong plant near Seoul. Even at the time, this was regarded as a surprisingly competent vehicle for its size and class in the US. Didn't help the image though.
121 Mazda which was replaced by the jelly bean shape then Ford Australia imported them as the Festiva. The coolest model was the Mazda Funtop convertable .
I had a Kia Pride 1.3LX three door in metallic dark grey with white wall tyres ! Only problem was if you had the window open at 40 mph or above you couldn’t shut the window fully as the air pressure pushed the window in a bit ! It had a hopeless automatic choke that would idle at start up at about 3000rpm no amount of adjustment at the garage would alter this as the carb adjustment was sealed as they had a catalytic converted but still a carb - no fuel injection! I remember after 3 years it was worth bobbins as a trade in ;-(
I had a Asia rocksta 2.0 petrol it was great fun to drive the roof did leak in rain and it did drive better when pulling a little trailer but I loved it's stylish design and bonett clips

Here in NZ we had the MK1. It was a festival or a 121. We had not even heard of Kia. They are really good little cars. I know of one with over 140000 miles on the clock. Sadly rust ate most of them. When they introduced the Mk2, they were different body styles for Ford and Mazda. The 121 was way cute. The ford ugly. We also got the MK1 and Mk2 "Funtop" which had a full length folding sunroof. We didn't get Kia badged cars until the early 1990s. The Sportage 4wd. Which was horrid. Now in NZ kia are a huge competitor in the market and make some great cars. BTW, after the MK2 Escort, the next small engine Ford we got was the KA. That never sold well here even though they were fun to drive.
Not many left indeed but still found some cars for sale in a Dutch online market. I have noticed that there are plenty of new part for sale. If you want more choice you probably will find a Pride on a Polish marketplace online

Hey Jude , see what I did there. You've got pride in you're pride so If you catch those rear arches and sills now and have them cut out and sorted you'll have a spot on car, this is what kills most. KIA is two Korean words which translates, "to come out of Asia". My brother is a mechanic and he tells me Hyundai and KIA are actually good cars and good value for money.
Parts are increasingly getting difficult to get not only for Kia's from the 90s but I can't get dust shields for a 2007 Kia no pattern or OEM by contrast I be can still get virtually everything for my K11
These were very reliable little cars but unfortunately they were very rust-prone in the UK (I lived near one of the first Kia dealers so there were quite a few of these and the larger Mentors buzzing around, and even the 2000 cars were looking very rusty by around five years old), and this coupled with the scrappage scheme did for them unfortunately - a LOT of these were swapped for Kia Picantos.
Kia only gives you a five year warranty in Europe? In the late 90's or so the Korean cars had a well earned reputation for poor reliability in the US. So they started offering a 10 year 100k mile powertrain warranty in the US. This was a time when 3 year 36k mile warranties were common. The story I heard was that the Koreans really upped their game on reliability during that time as they had to use their own dime to fix all of the problems with their cars for the first 10 years in the US. My wife had a Kia Sephia from around that time. Ford was invested in Kia back then so the car was based on a previous generation Ford Escort. I remember the car being a bit crude but it didn't seem like you could kill it even if you tried. I guess the fixes they made for the high warranty were starting to pay off. What I like about Hyundia and Kia is that in a time when everyone keeps trying to make all of their cars more and more up scale and up market, the Koreans don't seem to be afraid to make a good honest inexpensive car. And they still have a 10 year 100k powertrain warranty with a 5 year 60k bumper to bumper warranty and roadside assistance.

Early KIA and Hyundai's in the United States were exceptionally cheap but well equipped. They have good initial success but they quickly devolped a reputation for poor quality. Their sales really didn't recover until they introduced their 10 year 100 thousand mile warranty. They are still sold on their value but really aren't most buyers first choice. I remember seeing the FORD Festiva being given away free if you bought a Mustang or F-Series pick up.
Not really sure why the early cars had a bad reputation as they were literally Mazdas which Kia just kept producing. Mazdas have always been good solid cars (other than the Wankel stuff but no-one was ever able to get those engines right). Some of the later cars built between the Pride/Mentor and the Hyundai takeover were a bit questionable but even those weren't disastrous, especially when compared to the tat Chrysler were farting out at the time.
Well in iran there are billions of prides driving on the streets normally they are making these prides every single day the korean engine is really better than the persian one but persian's body is so stronger than korea because lot of its body part is made with strong plastic so if a 206 crash into a pride the 206 will become a toaster i have seen this kind of crashes 3 times that im saying this

Multiply your amazed reaction by a few million fellow consumers....and that's pretty much the story.
Tbh I'm not a fan of Kia cars to me they look a bit plain I've been a fan of Ford's , Vauxhall , British Leyland , peugot , Renault ,skoda , BMW and mercedes mainly because I know what I'm buying ie comfort and quality .

Brilliant little car, really quite powerful - the engine was actually something like 1324cc when most 1.3's are slightly under 1300cc. Really well built & nicely finished inside, lovely comfy seats. Took it up to Orkney loaded with camping gear, brilliant economy even fully laden - got nearly 60mpg!.
When buying it she had considered the Micra 1.2 (she had a 1.0 Micra at the time) - nice car but not as well equipped, slower & a lot dearer - no brainer!
You mentioned Iranian built ones, in Syria they were prolific, nearly all yellow as used heavily as Taxi's in 4 door booted form (UK only ever got the h/back).

I remember when these came out they had whitewall tyres. I have a weird admiration for the bug-eyed Shuma II that was sold by Kia in the late 1990s/early 2000s.

I nearly bought a Shuma a few years ago for, yes, you read correctly, hillclimbing and sprinting!! (wanted something utterly obscure!). I ended up in a Mk1 Rio which was as weird...

Kia Pride is also called people car in the Philippines 🇵🇭! They also use Hatchback and Sedan in Taxi Cab 🚕 in 90s until early 2010s, because of the popularity many young generations modified or Customized today it's easy to maintain a Kia Pride
I worked at a Kia main dealer at the time of the Pride they were incredible reliable never had to do any warranty work on them. When the 1.3mpi version come out Kia never changed the claimed BHP from the carb model of 64bhp but we could tell they had more power so tested one and found it had 76BHP. We also tested the 0-60 claimed was 11.2 but we had no problem getting a 9.8. These figures don't look that exciting these days but in a car that only weighed 800kg it was pretty lively ... oh for the nerds it works out as 95bhp per ton
If anyone wants one there are quite a few for sale in Europe for £1,000 or less and they even did an estate version which we never got in the UK

I actually own a 1990 Ford Festiva it's a wonderful and reliable little car. Kia also produced the Ford Aspire maybe you can do a video on it but I'm not quite sure what it was called over there

My wife got a 1993 pride as a cheap runaround in 2008. It was a white 1.3 lx K515LNG. It had a carburettor and catalyst! A great little car it was called into front line service and was used on a Holiday from Suffolk to Wales and didn't miss a beat. It circumvented the M25, went up to Yorkshire and just went on and on. Lovely to drive good comfy velour seats peppy little engine it was great. Unfortunately terminal underside rust killed it off. One of the best things it had was the remote boot release next to the drivers door such a good feature. I did get used to the indicators being on the other side eventually. Great review glad you liked the pride. The UK pimp my ride did a phase one kia pride on their programme I wonder if its still about...

Not bad little cars. There used to be lots of Ford Festivas & Mazda 121s on the road in NZ, but they have mostly disappeared. I have a 91 Festiva & am finding it a struggle to get some parts now
You're getting to drive some neat classics Steph. Last Sunday, I went round the ring at Wragby show in Brad's Moggie. I recorded it incar on my phone, and his brother filmed from the ringside. For some reason I can't get the video off my phone. And, had to mute some of the audio because of a band. However it's still worth a look, and there's a good shot of it. That's his last show this year, and it's soon going to get some work done.

these where the Mazda 121 and Ford Festiva in Australia, in fact, the update Kia was was very popular in this part of the world as the Ford Festiva, the update ran until about 2000, when Ford Asia Pacific was trying to find a small car to replace the yen fuelled Laser (Mazda 323) they tried to sell the Euro Ford KA before finally giving us the MK 4 Fiesta in 2004

My first car was a Kia pride, was a great little runaround! I sold it when I went to uni but saw it driving around still until a few years ago! Think it must have been scrapped now as a number plate search doesn’t bring anything up.
Here in Oz we had this one as the Mazda 121 first, then as the Ford Festiva, but that was before any Kia had ever been sold here. From ‘94 I owned the next model of 121 which had the same gear stick in that Kia Pride - Mazda used exactly the same gearstick in 121s right through until the early 2000s! Haha

I first saw the Kia’s round about 1991, I think they were sold along side the SAO Penza which it self was a rebadged Mazda 323 from a previous generation.

I think the oldest version of this car is the 1986 Ford Festiva Canvas Top from Japan. I have a red 1988 Festiva 3 door 5 speed manual and my grandma has a light green 1993 Festiva 3 door 3 speed automatic. They're both great cars but the 1988 feels more solid in terms of looks and quality and the 1993 drives a lot better because it's fuel injected.

The speedometer is marked "unleaded fuel only" due to that being the law in the only other country that would tolerate a speedo that reads in miles. Also, Mazda and Ford were so conjoined they were only technically different companies at the time. Whichever the badge, all of these cars exported to Japan or the West were stamped and assembled at the Gwangmyeong plant near Seoul.
Even at the time, this was regarded as a surprisingly competent vehicle for its size and class in the US. Didn't help the image though.

121 Mazda which was replaced by the jelly bean shape then Ford Australia imported them as the Festiva. The coolest model was the Mazda Funtop convertable .
I had a Kia Pride 1.3LX three door in metallic dark grey with white wall tyres ! Only problem was if you had the window open at 40 mph or above you couldn’t shut the window fully as the air pressure pushed the window in a bit ! It had a hopeless automatic choke that would idle at start up at about 3000rpm no amount of adjustment at the garage would alter this as the carb adjustment was sealed as they had a catalytic converted but still a carb - no fuel injection! I remember after 3 years it was worth bobbins as a trade in ;-(

I had a Asia rocksta 2.0 petrol it was great fun to drive the roof did leak in rain and it did drive better when pulling a little trailer but I loved it's stylish design and bonett clips

Here in NZ we had the MK1. It was a festival or a 121. We had not even heard of Kia. They are really good little cars. I know of one with over 140000 miles on the clock.
Sadly rust ate most of them. When they introduced the Mk2, they were different body styles for Ford and Mazda. The 121 was way cute. The ford ugly.
We also got the MK1 and Mk2 "Funtop" which had a full length folding sunroof. We didn't get Kia badged cars until the early 1990s. The Sportage 4wd. Which was horrid.
Now in NZ kia are a huge competitor in the market and make some great cars.
BTW, after the MK2 Escort, the next small engine Ford we got was the KA. That never sold well here even though they were fun to drive.

Parts are increasingly getting difficult to get not only for Kia's from the 90s but I can't get dust shields for a 2007 Kia no pattern or OEM by contrast I be can still get virtually everything for my K11

These were very reliable little cars but unfortunately they were very rust-prone in the UK (I lived near one of the first Kia dealers so there were quite a few of these and the larger Mentors buzzing around, and even the 2000 cars were looking very rusty by around five years old), and this coupled with the scrappage scheme did for them unfortunately - a LOT of these were swapped for Kia Picantos.
There is just one for sale on autotrader only 22,000 miles, I drive a newer KIa, good cars.

Kia only gives you a five year warranty in Europe? In the late 90's or so the Korean cars had a well earned reputation for poor reliability in the US. So they started offering a 10 year 100k mile powertrain warranty in the US. This was a time when 3 year 36k mile warranties were common. The story I heard was that the Koreans really upped their game on reliability during that time as they had to use their own dime to fix all of the problems with their cars for the first 10 years in the US. My wife had a Kia Sephia from around that time. Ford was invested in Kia back then so the car was based on a previous generation Ford Escort. I remember the car being a bit crude but it didn't seem like you could kill it even if you tried. I guess the fixes they made for the high warranty were starting to pay off. What I like about Hyundia and Kia is that in a time when everyone keeps trying to make all of their cars more and more up scale and up market, the Koreans don't seem to be afraid to make a good honest inexpensive car. And they still have a 10 year 100k powertrain warranty with a 5 year 60k bumper to bumper warranty and roadside assistance.

Early KIA and Hyundai's in the United States were exceptionally cheap but well equipped.
They have good initial success but they quickly devolped a reputation for poor quality.
Their sales really didn't recover until they introduced their 10 year 100 thousand mile warranty.
They are still sold on their value but really aren't most buyers first choice.

Not really sure why the early cars had a bad reputation as they were literally Mazdas which Kia just kept producing. Mazdas have always been good solid cars (other than the Wankel stuff but no-one was ever able to get those engines right).
Some of the later cars built between the Pride/Mentor and the Hyundai takeover were a bit questionable but even those weren't disastrous, especially when compared to the tat Chrysler were farting out at the time.
Well in iran there are billions of prides driving on the streets normally they are making these prides every single day the korean engine is really better than the persian one but persian's body is so stronger than korea because lot of its body part is made with strong plastic so if a 206 crash into a pride the 206 will become a toaster i have seen this kind of crashes 3 times that im saying this

Despite my biases I try to always give a fair review
Tbh I'm not a fan of Kia cars to me they look a bit plain I've been a fan of Ford's , Vauxhall , British Leyland , peugot , Renault ,skoda , BMW and mercedes mainly because I know what I'm buying ie comfort and quality .
Kia represented a very cheap entry point for owners and the car was lovely. Definitely a great first car.
