- I made this video about my new to me 1989 Ford Festiva. I wanted a Doug Demuro Style Episode about a festiva so i decided to make one in his honor!

I bought a '93 in 2002 with 12000 miles on it. It now has 152000 miles on it and is still proudly parked in my driveway. It has seen better days, but always starts and goes. LOVE IT!
Wow only 12,000 miles. Was probably good for the energy crisis in 07 and 08.

My mom bought it and loved it. She had a Cavalier before that. The cavalier could not handle being driven all the state. But that little festiva could go anywhere with no problems. I wish I could find one for myself. Mom let me drive it. That car was smooth and quiet. We could go a month without filling up. It was great. I miss that car.

I had a low end 1988 Festiva for 10 years. I'm 6'4" and drove it some days over 100 miles each way for work.
Everyone said it looked like a clown car when I got out of it, with me in the driver seat, tool case on the passenger seat, a hand truck flipped over the passenger seat and belted down, and 4 boxes of equipment in the back, each costing more than the car itself.
I averaged 40 MPG in New Jersey and needed to turn off the AC when pulling out from a stop, or I would get creamed on a ramp.
Very economical, and a deathtrap all in one. It was the first car I bought that was not a hand-me -down.
i currently have a 1993 Festiva L , bought it in november 2003 , for $ 600.00 , with 79 ,000
original miles / 1st owner , it now has " 222, 800 miles on it in oct. 2020 , & runs like a swiss watch !!!!!!
you have to maintain a vehicle whether it's $ 60,000 or $ 600.00 , pound for pound / dollar for dollar it's the best " damn car i ever owned " and i have had some expensive rides !!!!
change the timing belt & water pump every 50,000 miles religiously , and it will never let you down !!!!!!!! it takes a lickin & keep's on tickin !!!!!!!! my timex Festiva , lol, lol, lol,!!!!!!!!
In 2004 I drove from 1 hour east of Winnipeg to West Edmonton AB...a 15 hr trip. 3 tanks at $15 fill or 57 cents a litre...
I bought one new in 87'. Bottom line: 40+ mpg regardless of how hard I drove it; and I kid you not, this was and still remains the roomiest car I've ever driven in terms of driver space (leg, arm, head...etc...). An absolutely addicting car to drive and own. Sadly, I ended up trading it for a truck a couple of years later. A buddy of mine bought an 88', also new off the lot, and he drove it for like thirteen years. Great little car.

I found mine on the showroom floor. I drove it till electrical issues drove us crazy. Most memorable moment was fitting a full size stove in the back from Valparaiso to LaPorte Indiana. We moved our household; no moving van needed. Cept for the bigger furniture.
Mine was a 1989 Festiva L Fuel Injected Automatic. I added a transmission cooler, split rear seat, side mirror, CD player and better speakers and also cup holders to mine. Mine also had a rear defroster. My grandparents had one that was fully loaded with every option you mentioned.
I had two, an L and a LX. My parents had one with an auto. Loved them!!!
There was one just like this in the salvage yard yesterday. It was an L and had an automatic transmission. The body was perfect! But the interior was rough. It was an 89. I should have bought it.
I just found your channel searching for the Ford Festiva and I'm glad to see we all loved this car. I had a 1996 and it was a big part of my life. It was easy to keep clean and got great gas mileage. The only surprising thing was that the seats folded down I didn't find that out until two years after I bought it used. I also liked the sound of the engine when I had the windows down. It was a great car while attending college and I could attend class not worry if I had enough gas to get there. I had mine for ten years. One day I'm going to buy one as a second car and just drive it for fun. Happy you have this channel.
if you are stateside you didn't have a 1996 unless you had an aspire.
I always made my own rear cargo cover. Can never go wrong with adding speakers. 😂
I love your videos on my kia pride, errrr. ford feistva. I've owned one since 1997, and still own it today. It's not my daily driver anymore, but still love how it still sipping gas today in 2020. keep up the videos. .

I am an original owner of a 93 L model, and I still drive it all the time. I've had three offers in recent years to buy it on the spot by complete random strangers. Sorry folks, it's mine until I die. :) (I still have the window sticker)

@@paulwilliams4274 this whole video was inspired by how doug does his videos. I wanted him to review my festiva but i wasnt close enough so i just made one myself.
I currently have a 1989 Festiva LX. It is in pretty good condition. Looks similar to yours except it has fuel injection and we had to replace the 12" wheels with 13" ARs due to the fact that we could not find 12s anymore. Also ignition switch has been replaced with push button. Replace motor with one with only 140k on it a couple years ago. Was (still is) one owner car. Mom bought it off the lot back then. She loved that little thing. Forgot to mention mine is automatic.
Your 89 is an auto. In 89 only the autos got efi. In 1990 they all went efi but not tbe same efi used in 89

I had a 1993 LX. One of the best cars I ever owned. 45 MPG on every tank. AC on or AC off didn't make any diff. Wish I still had it.
Random find - I had this model of car in my university years, 2000-2003. Bought it for $200 CDN, ran it until 380000km on the original transmission. Only needed to replace the alternator. What a car. I sold it to another guy for $400 who wanted it for a parts car. Memories...
Excellent video. I saw a Festiva in our Walmart parking lot recently and looked it over. If I had known about the Festiva in the 1980s and early 1990s, I would certainly have bought one...maybe two.

Love it! I once visited a customer where my host had a Festiva. When we went out to lunch, he admitted that their family's "big car" was an Escort Wagon. I enjoyed the Festiva. I test drove one once, it was pretty well worn and the sales guy asked me "Why the hell do you want a Festiva?" I like cars like that...
I loved mine. My brother was riding with me one winter and slid it into the ditch. We got out and picked it up out of the ditch one end at a time of course, lol. Probably saved me a hundred bucks at least . I want another one.

I test drove a Festiva when it first came out....just for the heck of it. I wasn't shopping for a car at the time, but just wanted to check it out. I loved it. I love simplicity. I love non power steering in a lightweight car.
I saw a 1992 Ford Festiva in São Paulo, like the one in the video, but with 4 doors.
As it didn't have the car's name badge, after much research, the license plate and chassis number, I found out that it was a unit manufactured in South Korea, named Festiva. Great video!
I've always liked these little cars. Just bought a 2000 Chevy Metro. Can't wait to get all my parts in and get to work on it.
I have a 93 geo metro, these cars have the same spirit. I definitely understand loving it for its simplicity.
I had one but I never got 50 mpg on it ... but then when I was on the freeway I always drove it 65-70 mph, or more. But like you, I loved the car. Got rid of it when another car drove into me head on. Totaled the car but I survived unharmed. Replaced it with a Ford Fiesta.
It was about $6300 and just verified it was 63hp as I had thought. After just getting my license I would peg the speedometer, probably going about 95ish-mph, pass every slow American driver and be 300 miles away by the night's end all for about $8. Then $8 would bring me home the next day. Good car for a kid just starting out exploring the world. Never got pulled over in it. They just wouldn't see it. Edit: I forgot to mention since it was carbureted and probably didn't have an ecu, it will be one of the last cars being able to get over 40mpg after the bombs go off before the nuke/zombie apocalypse.
my father had one of these got it b4 i was even 1 year old, its a amazing lil car... my grandfather on my moms side kept trying to buy it from him for 12 years, sold it in 06... one day went boating with my mom and uncle and while getting the boat attached to truck my grandfather fly's by the house at high rpm like wtf.... mom looks at uncle "was that dad?"

My dad has one and won't sell it to me. He bought it new and has loved it since. He used it as a locksmith vehicle for years with the back seats removed and an inverter. I still want that dam car!

Bought my first Festiva new in 1990. It was a surf blue LPlus and while I don't own it any longer, It's still on the road and looks almost like new. I have also owned 7 of these since 1990 (4 at one time and all running and street legal). I currently own only one, a yellow 1990 LPlus with 116000 original miles on it and it looks almost like new also.

I had an 88 Festiva, and have nothing but fond memories of it. I am a firearms person. It is said that Americans definition of reliability is things not going wrong, and the Russian definition is that when things go wrong they are easy to fix. I was miles away from home when her clutch went out. or I'd have fixed her.
My dad had a 90 5spd in white! Remember it well, was my first car to practice and learn how to drive stick VERY EASY
Had one of these as my first car. Great gas mileage and an overall great car. Had the same trim package, but mine didn’t have AC.

I have a 1991 Ford Festiva GL that at 73 years of age I am going to drive from Myrtle Beach South Carolina to Seattle Washington in about a week. I love this damn little car and I drove it to South Carolina from Seattle 10 years ago. Yes. I am going to run the damn thing back to Seattle! It is noisy inside and the heater doesn’t work. But this little car is great on the highway and even the freeway and will cruise at 70-75 all day long. It has a 10 gallon gas tank. You can start out in second gear and take off faster than anybody can believe. Not much room in it but great mileage!

Oh wow, my sister had an 89 Festiva, blue, base model that was purchased from a neighbor of one of my aunts. This was probably in 98 or 99, and it was pretty low mileage and in great condition because it was just a "grocery car" for that elderly neighbor. I drove it for a year or so when my sister went off to college for her first year. Even with no power steering, it was fun to drive. Not fast, but took corners well at speed, ha. The friends that had to cram in the back seat had no room, but the two front seats had decent head and leg room.
I also have a Ford Festiva, although in Iran they call it Pride Saba, it is a good car.

This car was produced in Iran until 2020. Its engine injector in 2003 and was produced under the Saipa brand After 2006 with name Saba(sedan) and Nasim(hotchback same design festiva) I have the 2017 sedan model of this car, and here we Iranians use this car a lot.
I had a used one. I think 1988 or 89. The year before fuel injection & 5-speed manual but I still got 44 mph highway. It was fun to drive because light cars are so responsive. This reminded me a little of my 1977 VW Rabbit. Not as quick but nearly as nimble.

I miss cars like that. Today's small hatchbacks, the few that are made, don't have as much loading space in the back and don't get as good gas mileage unless they're electric or hybrid.
I have a Mazda 121 LX 1.3 5-Speed, it was made in Japan. It has heated seats, rear washer/wiper and rear foglight. It doesn't have a tachometer but it still has original 1988 Pioneer Casette player with original 4 speakers. Only 180 121s were sold in Finland, most of them were 1.1 LS 4-Speed

I inherited one of these with less than 20k on it from a family member who died. It was practically brand new . I drove it for 7 years. I camped in it got laid in it and traveled to different states. I got a lot of shit from my friends cuz it wasn’t a status car. They used to call it “the limo” but I didn’t care. The gas mileage was incredible. I took back bench out . Fitted with alpine stereo and good speakers. Could take my dog in it on trips with plenty of room for him to stand or stretch out. I put a bike rack on back as I did loys of mountain biking. I never had to do more than breaks tires and muffler on it and finally transmission bottomed out and I decided to buy another car which I truly regret as I’ve never had a better gas and reliable car except for my current Toyota Tacoma . The front wheel drive on that little thing got me through many New England winters

I used to have a 1994 Ford Aspire. Got it in... 2001 or 2002 for $100. The inside was dirty (not disgusting... just dirty) because the guy who had it before me hauled around landscaping. But that and it needing new tires, brakes and needing to restore it as much as I could from a dull pink back to red? It was otherwise PERFECT. Loved the hell out of that little thing.
I remember my girlfriend at the time dragging me to a Black Friday thing, and couldn't find anywhere to bloody park. So? I parked in one of the cart stalls. :P
Came back out to the car to find 7 or 8 carts behind it of course. Fair enough. I moved them out of the way, put them all together and brought them inside the store. hehe

The only way you could've successfully run from the cops in this car is if they were chasing you on foot. They could've called in a bicycle cop and ended that pursuit quickly, or just keep running after you until you had to drive up a hill.
great car... i had 2 of them my last one was a 1988 with only a 4 speed rough on the highway....when i had the oil changed they could never start it until i told them you had to pump the gas 2 times to start...lol also love the flat dash you could put a cup on there like it was a table...
The five speed models were much less noisy on the freeway!...That 5th gear should have been standard from the start!
Ford festiva was my second car owned and I have been trying to get one for the last 15 years, it was the most simple car I have ever owned.

A bit of a long story, but when I was little, there used to be a faded yellow one with a lightning bolt on the side in my town. That was my first experience with them. A strange fasination with it stuck around for a while.
Forgot about it.
Fast forward to the movie Idiocracy. Reminded of them by the one in the monday night rehabilitation scene. Gained a newfound humor towards festivas. Ended up wanting to buy one if even possible.
Skip a few years, found out that they're labled as horrible cars, just because they're not fast, strong, or pretty, and were treated as disposable temporary transportation. Not a "real" car. Did research, found out they're unrealistically durable for their cheap pricetag, many hitting 400k miles all original.
Searched for a few months, and finally found one for $900. I bought it three years ago, and i have no regrets. It's been nothing but perfect.

I just scored one of these absolutely identical to this one for 650$ with new tires on it with 80k on the car. I’ve owned so many cars in my day and honestly I’m more excited about this than any of them lol. I do tile work and plan on hauling my tools around in this baby.
2010 I gave $300 for my 1988 Festiva. My only vehicle that Ive kept track of all repairs, insurance.....etc costs. I changed out the OEM carb for a Weber. Changed the 12" tires/wheels to 13". One of the previous owners changed out the manual 4 speed transmission with a 5 speed. In 13 years Ive put 80K miles on it. It currently has 223K+ miles on it. All costs including fuel, insurance, repairs, upgrades..etc I still average 15 cents/mile. Very Very fun car to drive. Depending on how I drive it, my fuel economy can rage from 35mpg to 50mpg.

I had a 89 Festiva. Great car. Basic but roomy, fun to drive. I worked at a Ford Dealership Parts Dept. We didn't stock parts for Festivas except brake pads. They didn't break like other Ford's. It saved my beacon because my Toyota died and I needed a car now. General manager said $2800 for a 89 Festiva with 40,000 miles, 5 years old. Excellent shape. I jumped on that deal. Escorts were $4500. The one thing I didn't like, what if I got in an accident? Very small so would be bad for me.
I bought a 1989 4 speed manual in 1994 . WFO it did 168kmh+(104mph), I got a ticket on a downhill for 164 in an 80 zone in 1998. It did 240k before I got t boned in it, luckily hit the passenger side with no passenger. My passenger would have been dead. It was really good in the snow with 4 full snow tires: it rode up on the snow it was so light! I was doing 130kmh on the 417 in Ottawa at night on the unplowed fast lane, I was in the fast lane all the time. Everybody else was at 60kmh in the right 2 plowed lanes doing surprised pikachu face.

The rear seat "Flip" trick.
Even with the split bench roll it forward like you do, then lay the backrest rearward. Seat lays completely flat. I learned this trick and scooted the passenger seat all the way forward and reclined it as well, then I was able to haul a full size refrigerator inside the car (hatch closed)
On the frontal collision thing, "if the car were heavier you'd be dead" my ex hit a 98 Grand Prix 4dr parked under a bridge At Night in the Left Traffic Lane at 70mph, She barrel rolled. Over the center devider then was struck by a Navagator which skittered her a half mile back the way she came on the opposite side of I-60, seatbelt bruise, and whiplash was all she got. The car despite being 4ft shorter drove onto the flatbed, and the doors still opened and closed normally.

I had an 89 subaru justy 4x4 back in the early 90s. It was the same size, only 3 cylinders, but it was still fun to drive.
Ive wanted a justy for years. But could never find one that wasnt a cvt trans and rusted out completely. I used to live in the north. Rust was much more common

I have two. A 1990 and a 1993. Paid $200 for each of them. The 1990 I bought 20 years ago, and the other one last year. I have put about 100K miles on the 1990, and the 1993 was a one owner car. Both have around 250K miles on them, and are still running great. I removed the rear seats from the 1993, and its great transport things. I tagged both of them antique, which is only $31 for a ten year tag! I have had countless people stop and want to buy one of them, but I won't part with either one. Both are five speed manuals, and I average over 40 miles to a gal. Very cheap and reliable transportation. Of course in 1994, ford discontinued the festiva and brought out the aspire, but I don't like them as well as the festiva.
Oh, one more thing. 12 " tires and wheels are sometimes hard to find, but you can use 13" Mazda wheels on them.

The rear wiper looks bigger than the one that's on my 2006 Honda Element.🤣 I think these old Festivas had a bigger battery too. My great-aunt did have an 88 Ford Festiva which eventually ended up with my father. We didn't have the rear wiper. The separate rear washer fluid Reservoir when's coming on Ford's with rear wipers even into the 90s. We had a 94 Ford Taurus wagon with the same feature.
I bought a rental return in 1993 with automatic and A/C. I lived in San Francisco where parking was difficult and the hills were too steep for a stick. It parked between two driveways in my neighborhood. When I looked to the right and lined up the passenger door lock with the tree trunk on the sidewalk, I was perfectly parked. No one else could fit there except a motorcycle. I actually kept it until 2013 with 209,000 miles, then donated it to PBS.

I have a 93 I drive daily, I have a spare 1 I need to get on road, but its a love hate affair, previous owner neglected so much, but it is so fun, I love mileage, and its used within a 50 or so mile radius of my homes, but mine only gets 42-44 mpg, but has 285K miles, my other one is a 91, it gets 38mpg, and had 455K miles. but is also automatic
Nowadays this car produce in my country and i have one of them.😉😉 i'm from iran.and after 20 years it is very good and some times drive it with 140 to 150 km per hour😎😎😎
Do newer models come with fuel injection?
In the united states i believe they started using fuel injection in 1990.

They're a tough little car.My sister bought one new in 1988 and put 200,000 hard miles on it,then sold it to our mother,who put 150,000 miles on it with her paper route in rural Maine.Rust ended up killing it.

I've had 2 of these awesome cars in red and white. If I ever get a chance to buy my 3rd Festiva, I'm going to have it painted forest green with a black strip so it looks like the "Starksy and Hutch" Torina but in a different color!

Thanks for reviewing this car.I have 1998 carburator 5-door model which called Kia Pride CD-5 with no AC,manual mirrors,no rev meter,no dashboard clock but with different front and backseat headrests.Altough there's better model which called DM back then.Actually it's called Saipa Nasim in Iran and after 2010 it facelifed by Saipa company and called Saipa 111 and it's still produced in my country!!!!

I have one of these. A four-door version. I live in Iran and my country is overrun by these cars. Iran stopped producing them just this year.
