For the non-Dutchies btw: A frikandelbroodje is not the same as a broodje frikandel. If I ask for a broodje frikandel and I get a frikandelbroodje I'm not going to be a happy chappy. :D
This has been an eye opener. I’m an occasional Netherlands visitor and my snack of choice has been the Vegan frikandelbroodjes from Albert heijn. Pretty much living on them alone. I’ve got to admit I hadn’t realised that they were a widely available product, thinking they were unique to Ah. I’ll be seeking out some meaty ones next time I’m over. Do give the vegan Ah ones a try though, even as a full on carnivore I think they are great. Great work guys. ❤
Definitely try the ones from AH in the frozen section sometime. Those are the ones the sell in the store, but you can make them at home. But when you get them right out of the oven, that just hits different. (they're called: "AH Diepvries frikandelbroodjes")
I prefer them warm. I usually heat "broodjes" like those from the supermarket up in the airfryer on low heat, 140/150C. my favorite is the saucijzenbroodje from Boon supermarket.
Ouderwets opwarmen in de gietijzeren koekenpan op laag pitje, geen haast, veel vet eruit 'gewarmd', broodje op keukenpapier (nog meer vet eruit), warm en krokant... 😋

Since you guys were in Dordrecht i'd reccomend getting a Frikandelbroodje from the Nettorama in Dubbeldam. I used to always go there during school lunches to get one as they were cheap and delicious!
I work at Spar, so I'm proud 😂😂 but I know another frikandel broodje. You can only buy them at Poiesz supermarket. That's a frisian supermarket chain. They have a special one with real oliehoorn curry sauce. And 'oliehoorn' is a special brand. Their curry is really famous.
as a dutchie I have compared many stores multiple times, especially supermarkets can be really different each time I think depending on oven time/type/time in the aisle. However I must say that albert heijn is by far the most consistent, together with their above average quality and not cheap but affordable price they stay the #1 for me taking everything into consideration
So this is the first video I've seen of yours, so I don't know if you've already covered this.. but one thing that is super good that you should try some time-- not a frikandelbroodje, maar, the Hema rookworst, and also the Hema hot dog. Both really really good-- from the hot food window, on (or in for the hot dog) bread, sooo good! I've lived here a year, and love both!
For Dirk (and probably others) whether you get them hot probably relies on when you walk in to get them. I know from experience with my local Dirk that I have like a 50% chance of getting them hot or cold: it just depends on whether they just came out of the oven, or whether they've been there a little while. It would be cool if they had a way to keep them warm though... In regards to sauce ratio, I think it depends very much on the location and the people preparing them. I've definitely noticed some variety in that regard. For as far my own favorites, I'm always happy with the Dirk one. (Same for their 'beemsterkaasbroodje'!) My biggest pet peeve is the huge hole or the feeling that there's a huge hollow on the inside or a comparitively small sausage like the Plus one had: it makes eating them so awkward while on the go because the frikandel keeps shifting back and forth.
Lidl is popular because its got a cheap but decent quality reputation.(unjustly so!) They do however have some good products from germany now and then until the stock empties, like the green curry paste I got from them once was really good.
Frikandel broodjes are difficult. I always warm them up. Jumbo is the biggest gamble. Almost all the supermarkets have that thick and superdry pastry. Jumbo also has that. But sometimes they have a warm cabinet and other jumbo also have other frikandelbroodjes. You recognise the good ones with the thin/less wide pastry on top of it to cover it. The broader ones are almost all the time superdry. The ones like the Kios are waaaaaay better. And sometimes some Jumbos have ones like that. Same goes for Albert Heijn. The Albert Heijn to Go always have it in a hot cabinet and they are also less dry than the ones in the supermarket. That ones also have the thinner lining pastry on the top.
@buncharted yesss sirr.... Also warmed up of course and the thinner pastry slides on top. The pastry is way crispier, more taste and less dry. More like the Kiosk one. Only bigger/normal size. Same goes for some jumbo's
The AH also has a vegan frikandelbroodje! I’m not vegan or vegetarian, but this one really surprised me! It’s really compact but i’d give it a good 4 stroopwafels! The same counts for the Hema vega saucijzenbroodje, 5 stroopwafels.
Most bapao's are terrible! The only good ones are from a toko. Amazing Oriental has some (most stores have their own homemade suppliers), or other independent tokos. Voorburg: toko Eddo, Roosendaal: toko Welcome, Arnhem: Amazing Oriental, etc. But those supermarket buns are 🤢 (the less worse being Aldi)
As a self-proclaimed frikandelbroodjes connoisseur, my favorite is Nettorama. Unfortunately they're not in the test tho. They do have a store in Dordrecht tho, so I'm hopeful they might make it into a video of yours at some point 😁
Those are really good indeed. I strongly suspect that the lunchroom close to my work actually get their frikandelbroodjes from the nettorama next door. Despite nettorama's reputation as a budget supermarket the quality of their products is not bad at all.
At our Lidl, the frikandelbroodje look much better and taste very good. You guys really tested a burnt frikandelbroodje Compliments for your nice videos.
With these grocery store sausage/bread snacks the issue is always the 'baker'. The person baking it in store makes a huge difference. Sometimes I hear the oven beep, and maybe 5 mins later the rack is still in the oven, because the personel is busy stocking other stuff. So it comes out really hard/tasteless because it keeps baking. Or underwhelming. While at other times they take it right out. So even in the same store (Same location) the quality or how deeply baked a snack is can differ alot each day. The same goes for baguettes and pistoletes. Sometimes its baked so hard that when I try to cut it open to put my cheese or ham on it, half of the outside litteraly crumbles off of it because its overly done. I don't know what the procedure is about taking it out of the oven, maybe it needs to stay in after the beep for x minutes, or maybe not no idea. But it's just an observation
The quality of this product is a little dependent on how the store locally does the baking finish, even differs from employee to employee. Another thing is, if you bake frikandellen, they generally should expand due to their composition, otherwise it is more of a suasage, but this also makes it shrivel up after the process, leaving a unstatisfying hole. Again, this depends on the temperature used.
I think buying a Frikandelbroodje at a supermarket is kind of the same as buying a lottery ticket: it doesn't matter where you buy it specifically, you will most likely end up with a consolation prize, but once in a while you hit the jackpot or just a slightly better prize. Jokes aside, it just mostly depends on the person that handles the baking process that day at that peticular location, there's not a lot of difference in between the different supermarkets. Other bakeries are a different story though.
To take the frikandelbroodje to another level is to heat it in the oven/air fryer for a bit just enough to heat it up right the way through. Then add a bit of extra curry sauce on the side for dipping. Trust me, you'll thank me later. 😁
And here I am watching you two eating what I used to have for a snack while poton-jalan in the city. But I hope to visit my family this year and will once again fill myself up on: Frikandel Speciaal, Kalfs Kroketjes, bitterballen, a ton of haring and patat met. Yum!! Oh ja, en hoop gebakken mosselen en scholletjes!!
Damn you mentioning the kids near broodjes is so funny to me, because that's such a typical thing for high school kids here😂we always went out to get frikandel broodjes for lunch 😂
weirdly i love the plus one but everystore has a different one you have the one you guys have it lacks flavor and sauce but they have one with almost like a butter glaze over it they store them in heated glass case separate from the other snacks and it just melts on your tong and there is so much flavor and sauce but out of the 10 stores around me only 2 sell them they are so good - also a tip if they are a bit tough put them in the oven for like 2/3 min they become super flakey again - its cus they lay there for a bit and can become soft or tough
in my opinion the best ones are the ones spar/co-op since the ones here have them in heaters, they are a little greasy, but oh my are they nice when warm (dont go get them at the end of the day tho cuz they are dry and burnt) but the normal ones i think alberthein is the best. both flaver and price wise, cuz they are one of the bigger ones and that how to enjoy them ;3
I like this video, and I like that you try out all kinds of interesting foods, and I also have strong opinions about saucijzenbroodjes vs. frikandelbroodjes, (when I was young, only saucijzenbroodjes existed). I'll follow along and see where it goes. [edit: typos]
As you live near Rotterdam, you should try a more 'unusual' specialty namely uierboord. You can get it in some specific butchers in Rotterdam. Spannend !
Great video. It would be nice to see how you make a frikadelbroodje (or saucijzenbroodje or worstenbroodje) yourself! I often make puff pastry snacks myself. Also one with "gerookte paling" in it. Mmmm. My friends love it!
Would you like "balkenbrij"? "Gebakken marinier"? "Krentenmik"? The Netherlands have these local dishes, perhaps worth your while for further cultural exploration. I'm sure others here could offer suggestions as well.
There are only two supermarkets in my village. I dislike the frikandelbroodje from Plus, the pastry is strange and the curry gewürz sauce tastes weird. The ones from Albert Heijn are amazing! The curry gewürz sauce in them is perfect. They are also very often "in de Bonus".
I think Kiosk is good, also for 'kaasbroodjes', and 'saucijzenbroodjes', the only better options are from local bakeries. I would never touch any of these from supermarket chains.
Oh, do I miss a good frikandel as a Dutch man in the US( 30 years+) didn't have these kinds of brootje this is something new.I make my own kroketten, bitter ballen etc, (retired chef)cannot copy the flavor of tasty frikandel good videos watching for about two year's keeps it going
5:43 the dirk curry sauce has been too sweet for years but apparently they sell loads of the frikandelbroodjes and the meat pastry sauce percentage is normally better
The word 'spicy' is always a little confusing to me in english. It ms used for something thats hot in flavour, mouth burning. And when something has a lot of spices or herbs in it.
The broodjes at our Lidl are very different looking and probably tasting, since your was stale and/or burnt. Even your frikandel looked pale, like it was almost a chicken frikandel? At one of our Lidl's they sell almost another kind of pastry. Also the sauce from Dirk over here is not sweet! We also have more stores were the broodjes are sold hot and cold, Jumbo, Plus, Albert heijn hahah🤭 Next time, take them all home and warm them up a bit, also if you guys are maby going to do a kaasbroodjes test, those need to be eaten warm in my opinion 😅
Try kaasbroodje next time. All stores got a diverent one and it is my favorite pastry. Most of them are very good, but they can be a bit greasy sometimes.
I often eat a frikandel on bread as witpuntje, casinowit or Surinaams broodje with Ketchup and frietsaus, Mayo if it's the only option FRIKANDELBROODJE only if it's the only choice and I want to eat something fast
You should try to find frikandel broodjes at specialist bakeries and not the big chains or supermarkets, as you noticed with Backwerk, that's not a super big chain, and it was the best. Specialist bakeries are 200% better than supermarkets.
I just like a snackbar frikandel with lots of mayonaise and ketchup with unions its the best way to eat bad the best way😉 but honestly , i never tried a frikandelbroodje so , thanks , i will try it tomorow. ! PS : In my new home in friesland i am gonna try Poiesz supermarket and will let you know. Thanks for another fun video.🌷🌷🌷
Yeah, I never really liked frikandelbroodjes, because I generally find the sauce way too sweet. Made me think of BBQ sauce, which I don't like as well. And then one day I had to wait an hour on my next train, and I didn't have lunch with me because I thought I would be back before lunch time (thanks NS). So I went to the Kiosk, because it was the only thing in the station. And they had warm frikandelbroodjes and the rest they were still heating up. I didn't want a snack so I bought it. It was literally the first frikandelbroodje I ever liked, because the sauce wasn't so overly sweet. To me it's by far the best one. Granted, I haven't been to Backwerk yet, so maybe I like that one as well.
The one from the Train station shops looked nice I never had one from there and I don't think there is one on the train station in my city I will have to check
It really depends on the location if it is good or not. Albert Heijn is the most consistent, but if they are almost sold out you see the worst ones there.
Taking a bullet for the team! I've been vegetarian for some time and I can assure you that the vegan equivalent is not a great option. Even when you drown it in curry sauce.
I don't like to eat them cold tbh....can imagine that you would rate some of these a bit differently if they were warm ? Do you like them better cold ??
we rated them based on how they were served to us :) kids on their lunch break aren’t buying them and taking them home to warm them up, after all i do think they’d all be better warmed up but i also think some of them were fine room temp, so 🤷
For the non-Dutchies btw: A frikandelbroodje is not the same as a broodje frikandel.
If I ask for a broodje frikandel and I get a frikandelbroodje I'm not going to be a happy chappy. :D

Amusing video! Next time try the 'kipsaté broodje' from the Plus, one of my favourites!
long time ago when we would go for a walk during our lunchbreak, we always bought them at the gasstation, I think it was probably a Shell
Spannend !
I only like puff pastry stuff warmed up.
Nailed it.
I've been a frikandel addict for as long as I can remember, for me the best frikandellen with mayo are the snackbars owned by Chinese people
Oh, do I miss a good frikandel as a Dutch man in the US( 30 years+) didn't have these kinds of brootje this is something new.I make my own kroketten, bitter ballen etc, (retired chef)cannot copy the flavor of tasty frikandel good videos watching for about two year's keeps it going
Kiosk is always good even the ones on the train platforms. Especially kaasbroodje is delicious.
5:43 the dirk curry sauce has been too sweet for years but apparently they sell loads of the frikandelbroodjes and the meat pastry sauce percentage is normally better
I also really like the variant: Kroketbroodje
From all the supermarkets in my neighborhood I like the one from Dirk the best, so it also has a lot to do with the specific store
I’m Dutch and I have never had one, but I really wanted to see which one you would choose!
FRIKANDELBROOODJEEEEEE
In my experience the ones from local bakeries tend to slap the hardest!
I've had many from the Lidl, but they were never that dark
The word 'spicy' is always a little confusing to me in english. It ms used for something thats hot in flavour, mouth burning. And when something has a lot of spices or herbs in it.
Just buy a frikandel at your local snackbar, fold it in a white soft bun. Add your favorite mayo and ketchup, some union flakes and there you go !!
Geen fsn van dit broodje . Heb liever de kipsatebroodje meer smaak aan . Maar heerlijk om weer dit soort video's van jullie te zien.
I often eat a frikandel on bread as witpuntje, casinowit or Surinaams broodje with Ketchup and frietsaus, Mayo if it's the only option
FRIKANDELBROODJE only if it's the only choice and I want to eat something fast
You became famous on the Dutch youth news channel🎉🎉🎉
datum?
You should try to find frikandel broodjes at specialist bakeries and not the big chains or supermarkets, as you noticed with Backwerk, that's not a super big chain, and it was the best. Specialist bakeries are 200% better than supermarkets.
U guys r hilarious 😂😂❤❤
I just like a snackbar frikandel with lots of mayonaise and ketchup with unions its the best way to eat bad the best way😉 but honestly , i never tried a frikandelbroodje so , thanks ,
i will try it tomorow. ! PS : In my new home in friesland i am gonna try Poiesz supermarket and will let you know. Thanks for another fun video.🌷🌷🌷
Try out the ham-kaas croissant from the jumbo!!
Albert Heijn perhaps the sweet spot. Very tasty and still very affordable.
Great spreadsheet, although it was hard to pause in time 🙀 My OCD kicked in because the sheet was not sorted on ANY column 😡
haha sorry, it was sorted in the order they appeared in the video :)
Finally you are going to a PLUS Supermarket.
haha i know right 🙈
Honestly there is no good one anymore. Every store gimmed on the quality years ago. They were much better.
The Frikandel was invented in Dordrecht in 1954. So you live in the right place
i am a baker at plus and tbh the frikandel shrinks in the oven ._.
Nice vid. I do think the Lidl variant isn't as bad as you guys rated it. My teenagers love those. Perhaps you caught a bad batch.
yeah it was burnt, will have to give it another shot sometime
It really depends on the location if it is good or not. Albert Heijn is the most consistent, but if they are almost sold out you see the worst ones there.
in a nutshell don't go to a supermarket besides AH to get a decent one and pay less than a bakery, i need to check that out 😊
I'm kinda curious what made you want to move to the Netherlands?
the frikandelbroodjes
😅
Taking a bullet for the team!
I've been vegetarian for some time and I can assure you that the vegan equivalent is not a great option. Even when you drown it in curry sauce.
really?? that’s a bummer. the vegetarian saucijzenbroodjes are so good
This should be shown at every high school in The Netherlands. You should test them in combination with a redbull tho
no, an albert heijn brand energy drink 😂
it's a shame HEMA doesn't do frikandelbroodjes, cause their sauzijzenbroodjes never disappoint!
i know!! i’m surprised they don’t have one tbh
I don't like to eat them cold tbh....can imagine that you would rate some of these a bit differently if they were warm ?
Do you like them better cold ??
we rated them based on how they were served to us :) kids on their lunch break aren’t buying them and taking them home to warm them up, after all
i do think they’d all be better warmed up but i also think some of them were fine room temp, so 🤷
de lidl did you dirty man, usualy they are so good
Plz leave some fricandelbroodjes for us dutchies ! We like them too , guess that's why we have them
😂😂😂😂😂
