If you're curious about the origin of the "hoe dichter bij..." phrase: historiek.net/hoe-dichter-bij-dordt-hoe-rotter-het-wordt/110480/ (It probably had nothing to do with Dordrecht itself being "rotten".) Also, we know that Alex mispronounced "de wereld". Unfortunately, we make mistakes sometimes (well, often). 🥲
Fouten maken is toch niet erg? Jullie spreken het al erg goed. Ik ben nu Japans aan het leren (duolingo momenteel) en de fouten die ik daarbij maak... Komt vanzelf goed.
Historiek is very woke. Nearly all the time in the last 800 years Dordrecht was rich, but not in the period between roughly 1780 and 1820. People very extremely poor, many very hungry, many diseases. Poor people died. No trade because 4th English war and the revolutionary and Napeolonic wars. Government in Dordrecht was very bureaucratic and sclerotic, lots of nepotism, high taxes. The proverb goes back to this period.
the building you pointed out as the Dordrechts museum is actually Het Hof, where the dutch independance from Spain was signed, and thats why we call the park t hofje. i used to have outdoors PO here in Elementary/ middleschool
Officieël heet het parkje Kloostertuin, en Hof is het pleintje aan de voorzijde. Beide locaties werden gebruikt door leerlingen van o.a. de Statenschool in de pauzes, althans in mijn tijd daar.
@@buncharted I suppose so, judging from some old achived footage from the 60's-70's. It's likely that there have been multiple stages of development that I'm not even aware of. I only remember the layout from the 90's and onwards, from right before the constuction of the Drievriendenhof mall started and current day.
The best thing about a bakery nearby is the fact it always a pleasure to enter. Just the smell of it, mouthwatering. The second reason, so, so many breads to try. Sure, just 2 nearby for me, but that is the drawback of living near the edge of town, exactly 90m from it. 😂
I went to Dordrecht as a tourist and arrived on the train with no sense of direction - nice station building, shame it's not used. i wandered up the busy road past Dirk into the centre and had a wander. istr i went in Hema and AH and headed back to the station, as it was a cold December afternoon. NS did wonders they cancelled one service, and the next one was short formed. :( sounds like i need to come back on a nicer day and find a different way to get to the centre, avoiding that busy road
I plan another long walk through the centre of Dordrecht for tomorrow, and I know now that I do not have to take food with me, Do I?😋 Groeten from Zwijndrecht
No kidding. Seen you guys in other people's reactions. Never realised you're locals. How extraordinary. Until real life, I guess. You know how it is in smalltown Dordt. 😉
Been in Dordrecht many times, last time was last Saturday 😂 I always go for red velvet cookie from Coffeelicious and the 'bagijn' from Van der Sterre. But now I will check out the cookies at Foodnerd too. Salted sounds awesome! It could be baked softer for my liking, seeing yours from the inside but I'll try it out next time, and probably batbot too. Never had it but it looks delicious. Thanks for the recommendations!
I feel like a foodtour in Dordrecht without mentioning Bakkery Konditorei van der Sterre V.O.F. is a crime. Also, if you wanna have real authentic focaccia, I would highly recommend La Focaccina on the Scheffersplein, Tolbrug 3. The owner is from the region where focaccia originated from.
Were it not for you two, I don't know that I would ever make a point of spending time in Dordrecht. Now I can't wait to visit. Guess I should book a flight, eh?
Next time im in dort or close i have to eat that broodje the soft cookie i can leave that one cookies are supose to ne crunchie! But i only eat christmas cookies those tast always special for some reason.
Here's another source...Wiki could be wrong or right, depends how you look at it. "The first city to receive city rights from the Count of Holland was Geertruidenberg in 1213. Dordrecht followed in 1220. The inhabitants of Geertruidenberg profited from the rights granted. Trade increased enormously, because the Count granted the inhabitants freedom from paying tolls and at the same time imposed the obligation that certain goods could only be traded in Geertruidenberg. In this way, Geertruidenberg was able to grow into a regional centre and an important Dutch city, which, together with other cities in the county, had a say in the administration of the entire area. Representatives of the Dutch cities met in Geertruidenberg several times. The Count built his own house in Geertruidenberg, but also owned similar houses in other cities. However, the centre of gravity of the County of Holland shifted to the north, so that the importance of Geertruidenberg decreased considerably. Geertruidenberg remained part of Holland until 1813. In that year, the provincial borders were redefined. Geertruidenberg, Holland's oldest city, was now part of Brabant".
My favourite saucijzenbroodje is the one from “Bakker van Breggen” On the Reeweg Oost. A colleague brought these once as a traktatie and I was like BEST ONE EVER. But now I would love to try this one. 😄
I really should visit Dordrecht one of these days. I hear there is a waterbus going between Rotterdam and Dordrecht, that sounds like fun. Have you guys taken the waterbus before? Do you recommend it?
@ That sounds like a great idea, but I'll wait at least till spring before doing that. Unless we get snow and ice maybe. I just don't like this grey misty / rainy weather we've been having the last few weeks.
I went to Dordrecht for a few hours late one afternoon and apart from the pretty harbour I didn't rate the place so it was interesting to watch this. Surely it's pee-atsh-er-ey by the way - it's Italian...
Yo guys! All your videos are amazing and I revisit some of them a lot. This one is also very fun to watch. 😊 But I have a question that every viewer is dying to find out... Ahum... Alex, what's with the grey tuft on the front side of your hairline? Is it natural or you painting it for Michelle?
At 2:25 I definitely get how the bakery got his name, but I really can't stop singing this song while watching your video further on. 😉 th-cam.com/video/9c5yPIQ3LQI/w-d-xo.html
Okay, need to ask. How are you people not 300 kilo each? Are you starving yourself in between posts?🧐 Anyhow, always a mixed bag watching food footage, as a vegan😏 but love the way you are eating and enjoying your way through the Netherlands. You’ve been to places I’ve never been as a native dutchie. So living vicariously, cheers❣️
Nijmegen is the oldest city in the Netherlands, that is correct, but the oldest city of Holland is Dordrecht. Dordrecht is located in Zuid Holland. I should know. I was born there.
Love to watch your channel, But i Don't hope you get sick. The excessive amount of Wheat Gluten what you eat with all of those foods can be a problem over time. Looks like you're not Gluten Sensitive, Well i'm jealous, i can't eat that, not a single crumble of it.

@@buncharted Both the Statenplein and Kloostertuin got complete overhauls in the past two decades. Kind of liked the old designs better personally.
wasn’t the statenplein a parking lot for the V&D?

The amount of food you are eating, and both so slim..... mindblowing! 🤣

My wife was born in Dordt! And I know about the 'Hoe dichter bij Dordt ..' thing, was the first thing I heard when I met her!
Bij Foodnerd zag ik de blikken Snert staan. Dat is met afstand de lekkerste erwtensoep die je kunt kopen!
You missed The Neushoorn in de Voorstraat !
Love this kinda videos best of you two. Visiting a place or area and taste all kinda food. Thanks!
That's a looot of good food! The Iranian/Dutch bakery looked interesting. Don't think I've ever had any food from Iran
Hoe dichter bij Dordt hoe gezelliger het bij buncharted wordt.

the ´secret´ place is called kloostertuin. translated monastery garden
Xuan's spring rolls is what I'd go for. 😜
Hoe dichter bij Dordt, HOE rotter het wordt... Obviously a pun from 'rival' ROTTERdam;)

the waterbus from rotterdam is great but it takes like 5x as long as the train, haha
IMO, the waterbus trip from dordrecht to the biesbosch is best :)

Dordrecht oldest city in “Holland”, Nijmegen the oldest city in the Netherlands going back to roman times.
It is an endless discussion if dordrecht is the oldest city or nijmegen
Have you met the "Kloostertuinkatten" yet? 😆

Well, de 'Kloostertuin' isn't that much of a secret. You should go there on Kingsday ... packed with children selling their toys and junkstuff ...

Doordrecht isnt the oldest city in the netherlands, its not even in the top 5
it’s the oldest city in holland, not the netherlands
