That was my take. This is all going to be dated as hell in 5 years. This is just pushing buttons that might speak to certain young people who may or may not care about comic books. It’s a desperate, scattershot attempt to generate revenue for the here and now with no regard to establishing something long-term.
This is literally in the video, they don't care if it will get dated. Also, everything is dated and most of comics are dependent of their context, althought people fail to understand it.
If the most important thing about your character is their age, sex, race or sexual orientation then they are not important. Those are physical traits not character traits.
Some of the biggest writers say that they write their character without gender and when they continue writing they realize that their character has more female or male behaviors. And that's how you write a character with reasonable feelings and not something like snowflake and savepace
"this character has a tick tock. This character inherited a backpack. This character is nonbinary" You've just told me absolutely nothing about these characters. What do they want? Why do they want it? What do they fear? What are their obstacles? What obstacles are self inflicted and why? Why do they want to be heroes? Who are they really? You don't become a hero just for having a superpower.
@@ZackAleksandrowicz yea i think that would be better for what they wanna do... the characters would still need a personality tho but if its like a short series meant to be specificallly about this part of their lives i could see it work... There are so many other aspects and so many writers hit and miss horribly.
Exactly treating just the fact that character is gay as a whole his personality is even more homophobic than not including them at all, same for the race, gender and anything else

I feel so bad for Stan lee and George Lucas, imagine spending so many years working on your passion just for some idiots to come and ruin you work for good reviews from other idiots
George Lucas chose to sell his Star Wars property to Disney… nobody forced him to do it. If he wanted his characters not to be ruined, then he should have kept control .
Them trying to “diversify” the XMen when they have ALREADY been a symbol for the outcast and the mistreated since day 1 was so fvcking funny to me what are they even doing
I wondered at that, too. I loved the New Mutants (X-Men 2nd gen.) because Ororo was such a strong leader; Wolverine grew on me, but it took years. Nightcrawler was QUITE different, being small, "black" German, and having a tail. And he was so tender and perceptive! But I HATED what happened to Angel, when he lost his wings.
To be fair, Claremont, possibly the greatest X Men writer ever, made the good point that the original X Men team being an all white team that was supposed to represent diversity, was a bit of a problem, and that affected a lot of his writing decisions. And Claremonts run was GODLY, probably the greatest single X Men writing run.
Superhero’s then: We’re here to elevate the viewer and make them feel better about themselves, and give them something to strive for. Give a great story, and to push the viewer into something better, and represent the better side of the human race Superheroes now: Let’s try and make crap stories and lie to people to make them buy and read our stupid stories Like, I’m fine with characters being gay, black, white, idc. I just want superheroes to make me feel good about myself. I want superheroes to save people with their hearts, not their powers, not their beliefs. Their heart
It's really fine if a superhero character is black, white, or any colour. The problem is, they're forcing all those "quirky" stuffs to make them look different, which could ruin a part of the franchise.
Exactly, in Young justice for example; I didn’t mind that much that they made Aquaman gay, however, they also put poli marriages and spend a lot of time talking about how Halo was non binary and making it sort of “virtuous” when it add no heroic traits to the plot. WHICH IS THE REASON I WATCH. It feels like they just want to push to our throat the diversity ethos…
My biggest problem isn’t that they are trying to write characters of different races, sexualities, or genders, it is that it’s the only personality of them. I have huge respect for Spider-Man Into the Spiderverse for taking Miles Morales, a character which I didn’t care for in the comics, and making him super endearing and full of personality. Miles is from the Bronx and is African American / Latino, if this was a modern DC comic that would be his whole personality, but although he is shaped by his background he is also so much more, he’s self conscious and creative, a real character moving and growing, not a mouth piece. I could not tell you a single other word about Snowflake’s personality other that “they are non-binary”.
@@Eosinophyllis I hate to say this and put you down but *what the hell was that webtoon description.* it feels like you're trying TOO hard for a personality to the point that they'll have everything at once and have no way to grow or change and will just end up as "personality confused pansexual jealous that best friend loves their boyfriend and not them. Oh and also an evil swan" when it drops. Now maybe if they started negative showed that caring side but was spiteful around that boyfriend although ultimately doing something stoic for her best friend and maybe the boyfriend despite her emotional judgement that could pose growth over episodes of understanding and acceptance while now keeping the spite of the love subtle instead of "guard dog best friend everyone finds annoying except friends" levels... As for that swan idk what all that is about. Maybe it could go along the plot or save it for another toon but it does seem like it's splitting the attention of the story 50/50 not in a good way but a out of place sore thumb way like i mentioned before But it ain't my story I'm just putting my 2 sense in cause i want any better story than I'm Not Starfire or this xmen comic. "...he was exposed to his grandfather's experimental internet gas." Those are words I thought I thought I would never hear put together but here we are in 2021 and this exists.
Honestly, I now understand why some people say “Just don’t shove it in my face”. This isn’t representation, I’d more so like if none of the characters were LGBTQIA+ than this. Is this honestly what comic book writers and older generations think we like? They are so obsessed with being relatable that they forget to actually make them feel human instead of a sad excuse for a trendy character.
Fr,like this is my main issue with usual comics these days,we don't need LGBTQ characters or any of that, what most matters is a good story, you can add pieces and everything but making a well flexed story and interesting characters that feel relatable instead of a annoying political agenda, but you know that's just my thoughts, but ye good comment👍💯
@@SpookyHost ok but that isn't fair. You may not need lgbt representation becuse you aren't lgbt but not everything is meant to appeal to you. There are real lgbt kids that would love to finally see someone that is like them. A big part of comic book heroes or characters in media in general is they're most of the time supposed to be relateble. I still remember the first time i saw a piece of media that had male same-sex relationship that weren't either one-sided tokens for diversity or the butt of the joke from their straight peers...i was 16 when i experienced that. While i've never had problems consuming media made by and for straight audiences, it does bring that extra oomf when the characters in question are relateble with a big part of your psychology and identity. Lgbt youth deserve that in the form of lgbt characters. Heterosexual and cisgender characters are everywhere, so i understand why alot of people don't understand the need for lgbt representation but cishet people would feel the same as lgbt people if almost every single character was lgbt. Im not saying the writers of these stories are doing good by making the stories like in this video, far from it. Lgbt people also do not want half-baked tokenisms of characters. We are not 2 dimensional beings with a sparkly label. What the writers are doing wrong is they're making them caricatures rather than characters. If you're going to do this, you might aswell not try to write queer characters. And if you still want to include lgbt people regardless, do not try to write lgbt unique experience like coming out and facing homophobia/transphobia if you do not know how to. Just make it so that they're viewed exactly the same as straight people but with an opposite sex partner and viola, easy gay character. Leave the more emotional and granted more realistic parts of growing up/being lgbt to people that know how to do it. Im not saying make every character gay ofcourse. But for the lgbt being about 10% of the population, there's a serious lack of us in alot of media let alone ones that are well written and not just a token side character. It doesn't help that content created by lgbt people revolving around lgbt characters are pushed against in alot of companies and media and outright censored in alot of countries.

I always felt like comics were a way to escape reality, imagine different worlds, be inspired and get creative. The last person I'm gonna 'relate' to is a tiktok influencer, that is not the everyday person or what everyday people want to become. We want our kids to dream of being smart and strong, inventing new things and helping people, talking up the use of social media is not the way to do that. I'm inspired by the OG comicbook heroes/vigilantes and will continue to re-read the same ones if this is what the future of comics looks like.
I promise you not all in the now comics are like this, I'm a sophmore in highschool and I read recent comics such as the Moon Knight 2021 comic and Nightwing fear state and those and comics alike DO in fact have good stories. I'm going to my local comic book store to see what I find but I'm pretty sure this woke political snowflake tiktok influencer stuff was just a one time thing pumped put by Marvel.
I want to see a scene in these where some rando just grabs a shotgun, and goes downtown to start murdering drug dealers and users, and when the police yell at him to drop the weapon, he responds with: "It's OK, I'm over 21!"
Neffariousnyc My first thought as well. These comics already don’t understand or explore the concept of vigilantism, the pros and cons of it. This guy doesn’t even understand what it actually means.

To be honest, he could save the comic industry, but... ye, that is not happening, the sjw took over, What makes me also angry is that usually when they try the "fresh blood" they don't actually think of the agegroup they are representing. When I was going to highschool, we had an exam (english is not my first language so I dunno what is the correct term for that exam) where they had written slangs and we needed to match them with their correct meaning... My agegroup failed that part of the exam, because those slangs were not used by our agegroup. What I am trying to say is, theese people think that the new generation is stupid, or simply black and white when it comes to thinking and things they like or relate to, they insert politics, feminism and whatnot into the comics what were supposed to give people freedom from theese very problems.

Liam R3d I don’t care it is a graphic novel or not as long as a good story is written that what does matter. See how DC turned off the comments on twitter and TH-cam and it is just a graphic novel for teenagers. Can DC just think little bit before deciding to publish it.
@@talxxn the thing is that for these teenagers I can bet u rn they would rather read manga cuz it's free and they dont have to pay and its easily accessible. That's why I say that they are selling to the wrong crowd. Like if you want to gain a new audience then do that no one is hating but when your methods of gaining the new audience is gonna make you lose your current audience then there is a problem.
Mainstream writers don’t get it. “Female” isn’t a personality trait. “Tiktoker” isn’t a personality trait. Strong, proud, self centered, silly, forgetful those are personality traits. Why put so much focus on things we either can’t control or is so basic to modern people that it’s not even a thought in most peoples minds. He’s on social media. As is most people.
Ok I have some ideas Snowflake: they are loud, a bit self centered, but care deeply about other people and think it’s best to reclaim things before they come back to hurt us Safe space: he’s big, he’s strong, but he is a gentle gaint and thinks aggression is the worst course of action B negative: one of those classic “Tsundere” acts super negative and like nothing could get worse so she can save herself from feeling hurt in the future
This is just a high-level introduction to the hero concepts. I'm sure they have personalities and we'll find out more about those in the comics themselves.
"One of them is the Moderator to a Mutant Subreddit" Remember, if you ever feel down and bad, someone made this character thinking it was going to be great.
And the worst thing is, it could actually be a good premise with a little more thought put into it. Mutant Subreddit = Place where the "weird kids" go to feel less alone. Moderator of said Subreddit = "I really care about this place and want it to be a safe place for other kids like me". The thing is that for a good story this needs to be shown, not told. The latest writers seem to leave all the stories for the readers' interpretation - probably to truly "maximize the inclusivity".
That could actually be a really interesting element of characterization to explore. How having followers instead of friends impacts the character mentally and emotionally, how the need for likes and upvotes have corroded away the lines between the performative self and the real self leading to a sense of unfulfillment and desperate need to be accepted. Maybe that could be the motivation to be a hero, only to realize it's ultimately the same thing, a performance and mask to gain approval of people they don't have any meaningful connection to. Over the course of the story they make real connections and the motivation changes to a desire to protect their new found family. It could be a whole growth arc. But I doubt any of that will be in it.

The whole point of the X-men was to represent other groups through the story. EVERYBODY can relate to them. So in order for mutants to exist with the narrative they need to be hated and endure to show that throughout the trials and tribulation, the X-Men are a representation of human bigotry. Or freaking Spy x Family and the promised Neverland? All of these series are different because guess what shōnen is not a genere is a target demographic, and it's sure as hell way more diverse that anything DC or Marvel have release in the last decade, like just show one comic book that isn't about a superhero or that culminates in a big event like secret wars or the 15th time the multiverse gets rebooted, show me a marvel or DC comic that's pure comedy or a romcom and then I would believe your statement......
Yes, it becomes even more jarring when you look at manga's like "Kimetsu no Yaiba" and that is IMHO not even the gold standard. Western comics have lost everything that used to make them so cool. That would be stories like "Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood"
@@goofball5182 Well it really depends on what you think of when you generalize manga. Unlike comics, there's pretty much a manga for EVERYTHING. I don't read manga too much myself, but it's crazy how much they vary from laid back high school comedies to incredibly violent revenge stories.
Comic Characters then: A young boy loses his parents in front of his eyes and donates his life to fighting crime to keep anyone from feeling his pain ever again An alien is taken in by a goodwilled couple and becomes a god with more humanity than those he fights A scientist is struck by lightning and gains the ability to run faster than ever thought possible, them finds out that he can reverse time but has to come to terms with the fact that he can't save his mother. Comic characters now: A tiktoker A reddit mod An Instagram fitness page Upgrades?
@@HiBuddyyyyyy of course they don't. But you can't make a character whose entire personality is 'She's a tiktoker'. Also, willing to bet that one of the 'villains' these guys fight will be some variation of a school brainwashing kids into not thinking independently.
Mangas meanwhile: The first male in the bible fights the king of Olympus in a fight to decide if humanity should be wiped out or not. Marvel: EXPERIMENTAL INTERNET GAS
"We don't care about being dated, we care about being now" that's why these comics are failing. Stan Lee created characters that are timeless and are loved by millions. they stay relevant because they appeal to the imagination and are well developed characters people can relate to with unique super powers. this new team of creators only cares for appealing to the current generation, using whatever is popular at the moment Seriously? Experimental Internet Gas and now he can look up any google fact in an instant with his mind? oh boy, Galactus and Thanos must be shaking in their boots now
You know i will stay with what you said STAN LEE cared about his work and how he shaped them for people to understand what they are thats why we remember his creations, nowadays if you ask for the new characters like the new warrios and other they dont remember then, they just appeard on videos beign criticized and the only thing that make them important are the movies simple.
My favorite quote from Stan Lee when ridiculed for not making more diverse character was that it shouldn't matter if they're male female black white yellow all that should matter is that they are doing the right thing and helping people
@@VaughanRoderick Care to elaborate? I'm interested in your opinion. I sort of understand, but not quite... what do you mean when you say "manga has no chill"? (not a native English speaker).
@@VaughanRoderick Uh-huh now I get it, yes indeed that makes sense. It is also true that they tackle ideas in a different and in some many cases bizarre/blunt ways. (closest examples in mind are: Berzerk, Baki, Re: Zero, and any manga by Junji Ito).
@@VaughanRoderick This dude doesn't read enough american comics and it shows, there's a lot of American titles that are just as worse sometimes even worse than Manga. I can even name 10 off the top of my head. Manga is just gaining popularity in the west will it stand the test of time? That remains to be seen because Japanese culture is currently a trend. I've been reading manga and watching anime since the 90's and while it's at the biggest in popularity it's been in recent history it's a bit of a stretch to say it will stand the test time. Outside of DBZ Manga/Anime has no iconic characters known globally. There's also more to horror manga than just junji Ito.
Imagine introducing wolverine to an audience and the only thing you tell them is "he's straight, identifies as he /him" and expecting them to give you money to read that comic.
Maybe if you read the comic you'll see their growth and purpose explained further. Hulk was just a guy who turns big and green when mad and Peter parker is a college nerd who got bitten by a spider. I'm sorry that gender, sexuality bothers you, but this is the beginning of a new era where it's becoming a norm, give them a chance.
Getting super powers from "Experimental Internet Gas" is probably the stupidest origin story I've ever heard. If I had an entire lifetime to brainstorm, I don't even think I could think up something lamer than that.
While it's dumb it's probably just technopathy and they wanted to make it sound different. Most heroes get powers from dumb things so as long as it's done well it's not that bad. The important thing is their character and actions. Wally west was somehow struck by lightning near the same chemicals that made the flash by complete accident. Spiderman was bit by a radioactive spider. Batman was made because he couldn't get over his parents deaths like a normal person. If they spin it as nanobots that were designed to create wider coverage but his body somehow integrated them into his body then it would be slightly less lame but still one of the weirder ones.
appeling to zoomer ideology is not a bad thing, but this is no the way. You can take some movies or books or even webtoons and realize that the last thing zoomers want is characters to be like them. They dont care about characters who have tiktok or instagram.

"One of them is the Moderator to a Mutant Subreddit"
Remember, if you ever feel down and bad, someone made this character thinking it was going to be great.
Next superhero is a discord mod on an anime hangout
Reddit would probably hate this character
The mod's lifelong foe is Mr. Jailbait
The average Reddit mod’s special superpower is rolling at the enemy like the boulder from Indiana Jones.
"He doesn't have friends,he has followers"
that cringed me
That's incredibly depressive
look how they massacred my boy

So Zoomers liking them makes no sense. This would mean they themselves are self aware in there own universe. An alien is taken in by a goodwilled couple and becomes a god with more humanity than those he fights
A scientist is struck by lightning and gains the ability to run faster than ever thought possible, them finds out that he can reverse time but has to come to terms with the fact that he can't save his mother.
Comic characters now:
A tiktoker
A reddit mod
An Instagram fitness page
Upgrades?
And Americans wonder why manga is mopping the floor with them in sales
They don’t even have to have a tragic backstory, if that’s what they’re going for but that still means they need to be well written.
@@HiBuddyyyyyy of course they don't. But you can't make a character whose entire personality is 'She's a tiktoker'.
Also, willing to bet that one of the 'villains' these guys fight will be some variation of a school brainwashing kids into not thinking independently.
@Azrael agreed.
Mangas meanwhile:
The first male in the bible fights the king of Olympus in a fight to decide if humanity should be wiped out or not.
Marvel:
EXPERIMENTAL INTERNET GAS
Imagine thinking "colourful characters" means literally making them neon pink and green.
Superheroes in general are already pretty colorful in general too😂
"We don't care about being dated, we care about being now" that's why these comics are failing. Stan Lee created characters that are timeless and are loved by millions. they stay relevant because they appeal to the imagination and are well developed characters people can relate to with unique super powers. this new team of creators only cares for appealing to the current generation, using whatever is popular at the moment
Seriously? Experimental Internet Gas and now he can look up any google fact in an instant with his mind? oh boy, Galactus and Thanos must be shaking in their boots now
You know i will stay with what you said STAN LEE cared about his work and how he shaped them for people to understand what they are thats why we remember his creations, nowadays if you ask for the new characters like the new warrios and other they dont remember then, they just appeard on videos beign criticized and the only thing that make them important are the movies simple.
Love this comment right here.
So, if he has access to the internet anytime, what did he find in the Deep Web?
@@user-ir1xo9jp8w Get out of my head! I was thinking the same thing! XD
My favorite quote from Stan Lee when ridiculed for not making more diverse character was that it shouldn't matter if they're male female black white yellow all that should matter is that they are doing the right thing and helping people
I agree with you 💯%!!! I’m sick of businesses pushing their political agendas.
How do you feel about the owners of gun shops?
This is why Manga and Indie Comic is the future.
Manga will stand the test of time because when you get down to it, manga has no chill. None whatsoever.
@@VaughanRoderick Goodnight Punpun is ridiculously good, that manga is life itself and that hurts.
Imagine introducing wolverine to an audience and the only thing you tell them is "he's straight, identifies as he /him" and expecting them to give you money to read that comic.
That sentence about Triangles being the hottest
had me cringe so hard i almost died.
"he's short with anger issues and regeneration power"
sounds much better and actually makes you wonder where will it go
"This is Scott Summers. He wears some pretty cool sunglasses."
**moves on to next character**
“And that Gambit... Oh God... I want him dead.”
2 words. Radioactive spider.
@@yturieowpq at least a spider can be radioactive... But Internet gas? Wtf is that?
im sorry, internet gas????🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Im wheezing....coz wtfff mahnnn
@@yturieowpq not as dumb
appeling to zoomer ideology is not a bad thing, but this is no the way. You can take some movies or books or even webtoons and realize that the last thing zoomers want is characters to be like them. They dont care about characters who have tiktok or instagram.
