A million thanks, Jeff, for this superb interview with the incomparable Fred Conrad. Fred is not only extremely talented, he's also generous, genuine and modest.
Thanks for letting Fred Conrad talk. When it was over I thought only 10 minutes had passed. The stories of the photographers who inspired him are unique and moving.
I didn't know Fred Conrad, but I do now! I also know of a few of the photographers he selected, especially Frank Hurley, Bill Burke and Jeff Bridges. Not familiar with the others, but I am impressed with them too. Another wonderful, and historical (can we separate photography from history?) , episode. Thanks, Jeff.
It's Li Zhensheng - Chinese surnames come before given names (although, bizarrely, often adapted for a Europhone audiences; in which case, Zhensheng Li). As for Simon Norfolk, a key point relevant here is that the Taliban had also banned cameras and photography, so there’s some kind of symmetry between photographer and balloon seller in this case. I recall a documentary circa 2000-2001, “Langan behind the lines”, in which - ironically - some Taliban soldiers appreciated having their photos (or video) taken by journalist Sean Langan, because it was such a novelty (if I remember the details correctly). Anyway, a really fascinating “My five” discussion, as usual. Thanks.
Great interview. A catalyst that will get me off my chair and out on the streets with my camera. Thank you.
You are so welcome. It's always good to be moving.

Thank you. We were so honored to have him be a part of our channel.
Love this line so much: "He is an important photographer, because he understands the importance of photography"
I know. I'm glad that resonated with you. It did with me too.
