A few helpful tips. If you are using the pencils first, approach it as a colored pencil drawing vs a watercolor painting. Unless you are specifically trying to get directional strokes (such as for the flower center for example) use very short or circular movements, back and forth, burnishing the color into the paper. It should be an even layer. Use plenty of pigment, you want to fill the tooth of the paper. For color transitions use additional colors, including white if necessary, don't try to "fade" darker colors across large stretches of white paper. Remember color theory, if you need a shadow use blue or purple not a darker shade of the same color. You can blend by applying light layers over each other until the tooth of the paper is full. All of this is done dry. Once it's on, use as little water as possible to stroke the colors to life, how much depends on your pencils and brush.. you may need to blot a good watercolor brush which holds a lot of liquid. Nice long strokes with a light hand, as few as possible. Puddles tend to push the pigment out and give you that "naked center" look to an area, stroking back and forth does the same.. or wipes it right off...since the pigment is dry it does not sink into the paper until AFTER you wet it so it's easy to push it , make sure any pushing is intentional. Clean/wipe your brush often, if necessary after every stroke. Be aware of adjoining areas for crisper edges, dry between sections if necessary. If you wish to go with a more watercolor technique, use the created palette option and simply paint as usual. You can mix colors on your palette or as you apply the pencil to the palette.

Absolutely beautiful! Can’t wait to try this - I can already see where I’m going wrong with this medium (pressing too hard and having the pencil too sharp) getting immovable lines. Thank you so much. I would love to share my work but don’t do social media. If you ever set up a private forum I would love to join.

Wonderful tutorial as usual. I’m looking forward to using my new set of watercolour pencils. Do you ever mix them with paints in your pictures? Ie. Applying a wash with the paints and using the pencils for finer details?
