    Sometimes the most simple solutions are the hardest to come up with. To focus for a self portrait without an assistant, place your tripod where the camera is going to be, take your camera with you to where you are going to be, set your camera to manual focus and focus on the tripod. There you go. When you place the camera back on the tripod it will be focused to where you are going to be.

    I saw a neat trick to focus for a self portrait, which made me just say of course. Set up your tripod where you want to shoot from, take your camera out to where you will be standing and focus on the top of your tripod. If you are stand in a place where you can't mark the ground, just use some string to mark the distance. The distance won't change so your focus will be good, your only problem will be in getting yourself in the frame, but trial and error will fix that.

    Thanks for making this video. I always wonder how to make a good self portrait. As a photographer myself, I often find it hard to find someone who can take my picture the way I want. So I decide to take my own picture. The problem is with the focus and the aperture. You answered some of the questions through the video, so thanks! Can't wait to try it myself. :)

    Excellent. Some good tips there. I'm a bit of a selfie landscaper myself and I was at that spot in Buttermere at the end of April. Couldn't reach the tree in the lake as the area is fenced off for 6 months of the year as there are Sandpipers nesting in the surrounding tree roots. I went to the left and found some awesome stepping stone rocks as leading lines out into the lake and used them for my selfie by standing on the end two. Standing really still did a 76sec long exposure using a remote trigger in bulb mode. Worked out too.
    But total respect for getting in the water Louise!

    I use a Styrofoam head that I drew on, and gave it some glasses to use as a focus object. I also have a female head and a stand. The head can be bought at Walmart or hobby lobby for like $4 and the stand was about $10-$20 on Amazon. Dose wonders for my practicing and self portraits.

    What I like about my canon setup is that I can set up the canon app to remotely control my camera. I can set the countdown timer on my phone for the camera to say 10 seconds, put my phone away and wait for my shots, review them off the phone etc. Not sure if nikon have this for nikon users?

    cool video.. for focussing, i would suggest slightly a different approach.. take the camera off the tripod, go to the spot where you want to stand, focus on the tripod, lock the focus and then take from the tripod..

    • @googleprofiel6814
      @googleprofiel6814 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      But why do it this way and not choose the focus point and then orient yourself into the picture to have the focus point on you and use autofocus? That way, of you walk in in that place you can go closer/further while you're taking pictures with the camera always focusing on you...

  • @protaso7119
    @protaso7119 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Great self-portraits. I need to get out more and stop the excuses. Only one point to make - surely it was manual mode rather than aperture priority? You wanted to capture detail of self & landscape and freeze action of hair and dress hence f8+1/250th and in the second shoot again capture self detail and soften ripples in the water hence f5+1/30th. ISO could then be manual or auto depending how you want light & texture.

    Really love the channel and everything you guys at practical photography stand for, I've learnt so much., I'm not a great photographer, but I can't help but feel like your last shots are really quite underexposed... I know this is subjective. However, judging by the comments, I can only assume that I'm wrong.. could somebody explain why? Also, why do you guys always shoot scenic shots at the same bloody places, haha?
