  • I finally got sick and tired of my Hanna refractometer losing its calibration and decided to bite the bullet and get the Milwaukee. I should have done this sooner. It is way better than my Hanna, and easier to calibrate.

    I was always tempted to buy the Hanna heard to many horror stories about them from my customers about their lack of reliability to hold a calibration for longer than a few days in some cases.
    I bought the old bright green Milwaukee years ago but in the end I just found it quicker & easier to use a good old fashioned refractometer, especially when testing multiple systems regularly so rarely use it anymore but it's just personal pref. Also I seem to remember being told to fill the cupped reader part all the way up but this may have changed on the new ones 👍

      The good old refractometer has been around forever. And for a good reason. It just works.

      I made the big mistake too buying the Hanna checker. Garbage. I might get this Milwaukee one

    Hanna refractometer is brilliant and accurate as long as you recalibrate it before each daily use at the correct temperature. Never used Milwaukee but have heard good things only.

      If you have to spend almost a buck to recalibrate it before you use it…. Is it really worth it?

    • @northeastcorals
      @northeastcorals ปีที่แล้ว

      @@shallowreefing Nope it's not worth it at all.

    The hanna Salinity checker I think does ok with new water but a bad choice for checking a tank with organics. The Hanna Digital Refractometer is supposed to be nice but cost more then the Milwaukee. After the initial calibration my tap doesn’t have salt in it and I have a good idea what the tank is at… but yes it works way better then plastic hydrometers and I think easier then manual one.

      Hanna was great for years for me. Then it just went out of calibration no matter what I did. I think there may be a life expectancy on how accurate they can measure.

    I missed it. Did you calibrate the handheld refractometer with distilled water?

    • @shallowreefing
      @shallowreefing  ปีที่แล้ว

      They give you distilled water to calibrate and a reference solution for saltwater

      It would give you insight in troubleshooting by testing your RO, it could be old filters before jumping into salinity probs.

    • @shallowreefing
      @shallowreefing  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Jel0XD I changed my filters about 2 months ago. It was in my other video when I was trouble shooting where some zinc was coming from. I think it was the witch hazel and ICP video.

      Thanks again for the tip on the Milwaukee!

    Fancy. I recently got the tropic marin glass hydrometer because I couldn't trust my refractometer. I just kill all the pumps and float it directly in the tank to sanity check the salinity!

      Haha yeah no USB charging. I think it might be to stop water from getting into it.

    Honestly i've had my milwaukee ditital refract for about 4 months now. I used to use one of the water drop prisms. Never going back.

    I had both and when it still was color green. Both are great but latter is bulky.

    Your instrument shows 1.024 but should be 1.025. Any defect?

    • @shallowreefing
      @shallowreefing  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Nah. There is a .001 margin of error. So if it is 1.025 it could read 1.024 or 1.026. I find it acceptable.
