Catching up, cygnets and a very nasty injury…

  • I’m sorry there was no video yesterday, I know some are keen to follow Syd and Wilma’s beautiful cygnets as they take their first steps, well swims, into the big world, but I work full time as well as being a rescuer and life sometimes gets in the way.
Yesterday morning I couldn’t check on the swan family as I had been asked to do a live radio interview about duckling rescues this year. I did get there after work and have footage to share, but ended up being out way too late on an unplanned rescue which had to take priority.
I’d been to do a swan feed pick up with Stacey but when we tried to get back home, the road was closed so I detoured, and the road on the detour was closed too, so I took another detour and ended up near a lake where one of my special swans lives. Couldn’t go past without saying hi so we parked up to look for her, and saw a swan on the bank opposite that didn’t look right and went to check it… OMG, it was horrendous! That poor bird, she was collapsed on the bank with a nasty puncture wound to her right side, the smell was horrific and the wound was full of maggots. She was in absolute agony and in desperate need of help so we called The Waterfowl Sanctuary to ask if we could take her straight in, but luckily for our poor swan, Graham and Rebecca were already in our area so headed straight to help.
We cleared the maggots out straight away to give the poor bird immediate relief and, after we had disinfected the whole affected area, the beautiful swan was transported to hospital where she is thankfully responding very well to treatment.
This morning and evening I’ve been able to visit Syd and Wilma so video updates on the cygnets are now available. The family was out swimming this morning so I took the opportunity to remove the body of the cygnet that sadly didn’t survive hatching, the smell was putrid, same as last nights rescue, so it will be much nicer for the swans to rest on their nest now.

Thank you so much for the update on Wilma, Sidney and their cignets. It's sad to know that one of them couldn't survive.😢 Thank you for taking care of them, so well, even though you have a full time job. That makes all your efforts even more valuable. I hope all the cute cygnets grow healthy, safe and well. Please, keep us informed on the progress of the injured swan. God bless you! 😊

I started watching your videos maybe a couple weeks ago. And thoroughly enjoy them! So happy for the swan family. So splendid. Wishing them well. Thank you for all you do to take care of these majestic beauties.

Any idea what made the wound on the other swan? Thanks for the videos whenever you can make them. 👍
