I agree with this completely. I like my farmertec saws. I have 3 and am ordering more. They're great fun saws. And I'm learning about porting and experimenting with it. I'd rather screw up a $30 cylinder than an OEM cylinder and I don't have to rely on it for a paycheck
I want the OEMs to compete on price. Even with labor price differences there's no way a Stihl should cost 5x the price of a clone. We shouldn't be paying 500% more for that last 10% of quality. The industry needs more competition to be healthy.

I have and use the G660 pro and the G111 top handle saw and they both work great and perform as expected. The only changes I’ve made to them was changing out the chain tighteners and using OEM parts and they’ve been good ever since. Also, changed out the pull cords but that’s because I have a certain rope I put on all my saws and to the length I like them at. They are great for back ups and well worth the price in my experience.
"Life is like a box of Farmertec, You never know whatcha gonna get" They're great for those who like to tinker and for personal use. You'd hate to build one of these "on the clock". Most of the parts are close to OEM and sometimes that's ok for non-critical moving parts. But it's a real pain trimming and tweaking pieces and parts to work smoothly when OEM works the first time, every time.
Yeah, best "training" kits possible. But some "models" better than others, can't make a statement that spans all of them. Some FT's are a crap shoot some predictable. ALL my hopped FT372 had the bottom ends fail in around 6 months in pro level use. But the 395 has been solid.
Like the channel, been watching several years. It'd be great to hear your in depth input on the 288 top ends and would love to see you finally dig into your 562
I picked up a G660 kit a few months ago to build and use it as a learning platform. The casting on the cylinder was so bad I had to clean up intake and exhaust ports just to use it. I also blended the bottom of the transfers to smooth out airflow. I pulled the baffle out of the muffler, match the gasket, and the muffler to the exhaust port, and opened up one of the two exhaust ports on the muffler a little. I put it together and fired it up and it ran fine for a few hours, and then it wouldn’t idle, was struggling off idle and it wouldn’t tune, I found the leak, split the case and put it back together with a highway gasket kit, I also put an OE keyway on the crank. I took it to a local builder to double check my work, it tested good but still wouldn’t run. It ended up being a bad carburetor. So I put an OE magnum carburetor on it, now it runs like a champ. It’s been a fun toy but I’m glad it only cost me about 250 to get the parts kit. Between tools and parts I’m in about $600. A few hundred more and I could’ve bought something OEM. But this isn’t a production saw, it’s more of a toy, so I’m happy to put a little money into it here in there to turn it into whatever I want it to be. But I wouldn’t want to rely on it to make me a paycheck.
It's a great learning experience if nothing else. I recently bought a g660 ready to run, because I had a big tree in the yard fall. I bought an actual stihl ms 271 I was going to use, but could of used a bar bigger than 20in. I put a 25in on the g660, I figure I'll just use the ms for limbing, and the 660 for anything with good size. If nothing else it will help my 271 last longer. The 660 was listed at $260 shipped, just couldn't say no.😂 we'll see how long it last.
I use farmertec body parts cuz there inexpensive but I find it's best to rip its guts out and replace it with o e m .I'm not a saw builder but I'm learning and I give credit to tinman and ironhorse for getting me started them 2 men have an endless amount of knowledge
I’ve had the Farmertec G372 for over a year with 6 cords of wood under its belt. No problems yet (cross your fingers). I’ve had the G660 for 4 + years now with countless milling hours on it with zero issues. Maybe I’ve been lucky, maybe I know how to run and take care of saws.
There are several folk on utube who run them and claim decent longevity bucking and chainsaw milling for the price point - they also know how to wrench on their own saws and maintain them, adjust the mixture correctly and run a sharp chain. I have only worked on a g372 clone and after some swaps to oem parts its a decent runner for the cash. Like Tinman said , I don’t think I’d recommend a built one to a tree-service or logging company other than as a backup saw. For those situations (running many hrs a day everyday) get a pro saw and “buy once cry once”
I love your honest. I bought a set of bare large200cc or 210cc runner"can't remember which" 60cc SBF China aluminum heads and after having everything set up and weak parts changed mainly valve guides. I had almost the same amount of money as buying the name brand heads but at least they're CNC machined
Perfect timing for a Tinman video lol I'm in the process of being distracted while I'm supposed to be reorganizing my work shed. I just finally got my mitts on a bench vise so I don't have to grow my belly to refnw my handfile skills....and I have have been heavily debating grabbing a farmertec saw
Based on my extremely limited experience with them and I've had no outright failures with farmertec yet, I completely agree with you. Absolutely great for learning saws, scratching that itch for a new toy or if you need that big saw a couple of times a year! They've treated me well so far but I wouldn't want my name on one that was built with all farmertec parts.
I bought one of the Holzfforma g660 Pro models and I've put a decent amount of use on it in the year I've had it, at first I was quite skeptical... But the more I run it the more I like it. I bought mine pre assembled, checked it over but didn't tear it down as I didn't see anything concerning. The only things I've changed is the muffler, and I deleted the decomp. Overall I have to admit, for someone like me who only needs a 90cc saw occasionally, this is about the best value you can find. I'm fairly certain by the time I break this one, it'll have made enough money to buy me a real 660 or 395...
I have 12 farmertec saws,9 kits n 3 pre-built, 5 years on ported milling saws, 3 saws go to work everyday for past 3 years, it all depends on who builds it..I've snapped n bent cranks, had some pistons explode, seal failure n the such..I've had the same failures in my oem saws..
That’s sad news about the 590. I have one for years now and like it. It’s just heavy with a long bar. I went to a smaller lighter saw with a smaller bar. But I was hoping you had good luck with echos so you’d do more
Here in Australia the Chinese saws make a bit more sense due to cost of new saws. Echo 7310, stihl 500i and husqvarna 572 are around $2000 here, which is a over the top for a firewood saw.
I rebuild and collect saws, I buy most of them off Facebook market place, pro saws that are blowen up. I rebuild them with good quality parts, I could build two pro saws for 400-500$. now where I live there is a lot of chainsaws, so I usally never pay much for a carcus saw, and sometimes people just drop saws off at my house.
Would love to see what you make of the numbers and how you'd port an Echo 7310 since it's a new saw, but still carburetor and more of an "old school" type construction. Seems like porters are getting good results, would love to see your take on it. Happy new year!
I’m planning to do a fair amount of slabbing. I don’t mind digging in to 2-stroke guts so figured the 660 clone would be ok for that with a little technical coercion.
I don't know if I would go with one of these. I think I'll stick to my 200 and 300 series Husqvarna saws. It's kinda novelty type stuff to me and not really worth my time. To each there own though. TC Mahalo Tinman 🤙🤙🤙
i got a 070 clone down here in new zealand we generally get sent the worst parts from the bunch were so far away were most likly not going to send them back make a long story short i replaced head to meteor 090 italy ingition tilitson carb and a bunch of hard ware 2 to 3 years later and ive milled some huge loggs macarcarprea and toatara still runs good
I think the farmer tec is the best option for milling you are using it extremely hard so you aren’t destroying a vintage saw and you aren’t blowing up a $1200 new saw you can build three for the price of a new saw. I built a 372 farmer tec with a OEM crank I had kicking around I replaced the bearings with ceramic bearings used a hyway piston and cylinder big bore 75cc and a OEM carburetor and it is a awesome saw I did a very mild port job opening the transfer and got the exhaust and intake duration a tiny bit better than stock and that saw is a work horse. For a serious build they are pretty much just a starting point and I use just the plastics fasteners and the cases
Yap agree on all what's said reason farmertec ones are so cheap is because not oem parts used which makes a difference now if u took and swapped out for oem parts u may or may not have one that will last it all depends on how saws are ran even oem can break
Been milling with a g660 for a few years now and for me its been awesome. But if I have a problem with a saw I just fix it, if your depending on one of these Chinese saws buy 2 and work on them yourself, its not really worth it to pay someone to do it.
I was obsessed with Farmertec/Holzfforma saws this fall. I so badly wanted a big blue monster saw. Fortunately I let the obsession go and it was probably a wise choice. Perhaps one day I'll buy one, if I have money and time to burn. I'm not a saw builder (yet). Mostly wannabe.
Who remembers Heathkit & Tandy radio & computer kits for hobbiests and tinkerers? And Volkswagen body kits that looked like expensive sports cars? Cheap Chinese saws & kits remind me of those.
I'm curious about the "pro" versions of the clone saws if they are actually any better. Claim to have a oem walbro carb, caber ring, quality piston and nikasil liner.
They get good reviews. I've been thinkin about getting the g660 pro to use as my big firewood saw. I could possibly hold out and save ti buy a genuine stihl, but I'd be a while waiting. I cut about 5 cord a year and only need a bigger saw occasionally. I'd say theyd be fine for what I do
I have a G444 for a couple years now,had to replace the oiler with a stock Stihl one but other than that lots of power in this saw.Imalso have a G372xp saw, oil leaks bad so an oiler is in its future. But lots of power, for how long we’ll see.
Just bought one of these, the third gen g372xp Would you pull it down and inspect it before pulling that handle? I really want to port it but you say they nickel chips for memory. Tossing weather to just buy a hyway pop up bid bore kit for it and run that? I would probably only use it a few hours a month
Took a quick look at vaguely comparative prices today. The Husky (and I love my Husky) needs to outlive the Farmertec saw by at least three times to be a bargain ;) I wouldn't recommend Farmertec for someone that's living off their saw, but hobby level, homesteader? Probably worth buying, imo.
I can agree with you that farmertec is a lower quality but for the price hard to beat, i dont care for the prebuillt, like anything the operator determines how long it will last
I have a g888 with maybe 6 tanks of gas through it. Had to replace the pull handle, the gas cap, and no a stihl cap didnt fit. The coil was bad out of the box... it seems like every time i run it something breaks, so far its been little stuff but a bad coil out of the box?
I built one of these, the only part I added was a Caber piston ring. It runs great but it has less power than my OEM 372xp. So if you want a 20lb saw with less power than a 72cc saw this is the saw for you.
What is your opinion of putting an OEM top and bottom end in a farmtek case? My 181 got dropped and put a big crack through the oil tank and finding a good OEM frame for such an old saw is really difficult.
Honestly they are perfect for that. I did the same to a 660 I got a good deal on because the frame was broken. Kept the saw out of the landfill and I got a great deal!
Hey Tinman. How’s it going brother. Do you have any interest in porting my stihl 362 C-M? I clear cut cedars, on steep side hills, for prescribed burns.
The metal the chinese used is muck cheaper than OEM. I have a Husky 50 I bought in about 1985. The only non original motor parts are the plug and fuel line. It’s on bar number 4 and about chain number 45-50. There will never be a Holtzfforma that lasts that long. Now if you want to change the rotating assy and carb with OEM it will last a lot longer.
I just got a husqvarna 266 I think. Everything shows its a 266xp by what I've learned from your videos on the 200s series. It has a s224 tiltson. Does that sound right for the saw?
@@fabzacres-blackcat ..yeah...and covers, maybe muffler, and who knows what else..when you go to putting 268 or 272 parts on 61's/66's/266's, you start having a lot of clearance issues with external parts and stuff not fitting right, so you have to make a Frankensaw with mixed parts or hack up your existing parts..better to just find a good 266 cylinder and a new piston/rings, maybe port it, IMHO..if you want a big-bore, find a blown 268 or 272 to build...
@@dyer2cycle the 272xp covers go right on a 266se/xp - all you need do is drill and tap (2) 10-32 holes. If you put a meteor or oem 272xp top end kit on a 266 You WILL need a complete 272xp intake and muffler. The beauty of using the 272xp cover is that now you can utilize an aftermarket 395xp style hose clamp air filter. The 61, 266, 268 and 272 all share the same bottom end afaik. The 272 will simply WALK all over a 266 (almost 6cc more at 66.7 vs 72.2) the way I build / mod them - in fact they will beat a stock STIHL 400c and just about run with a stock 462c. Not bad for an almost 40yr old chassis! Your mileage may vary
@@fabzacres-blackcat ..yes, exactly what I was talking about..lots of modding...if I was wanting a big bore 266, I would want it to be a "sleeper", and look like a 266..using the 266 covers..if you have to mod everything to make it work, better to just hunt down a 268 or 272 and build it as such, rather than making a Frankensaw out of a 266, which is actually a nice running saw in stock form..
so in my hot little hands i have a 288 cylinder and a 395 big bore cylinder ( 58 mm ) ...... the deck height may be different on these saws ( but that shouldn't be a big deal ) , but it appears to be a dam near direct bolt on , the 58mm , 395 cylinder onto a 288 chassis , which would turn the 288 into just over a 100 cc saw ...... i still need to go outside and find a 288 chassis carcass and degrease it , to bring it inside to start taking some measurements .
The only aftermarket part I use Internally is Meteor pistons. I had great luck with these. The only time I use Meteor is when OEM is not available though like a husky 254. I dont use aftermarket cranks, or cylinders. If I cant find OEM it will be parted out or go to the scrap pile. I cut 300+ face chords of firewood a year.
Buy a $150 Echo CS-620 piston/cylinder and send him that Timberwolf, it will be a good saw that will take a beat down!! Haven’t had luck with any of the china junk, won’t work on them.
Thanks for this and all your videos, I'm learning a lot! Question: What fuel mix ratio do you recommend on these? On these Farmertech/Holzfforma saws I see they call for 25:1 fuel/oil mix ratio. Everything else I have that is 2-stroke is 50:1. 25:1 seems strange to me. I'm considering the 660 Holzfforma just for homeowner-use. Probably use 3-5 times a year only for large logs for firewood (36" bar).
The 25:1 they call for is for break-in, after that, 50:1, 40:1, or whatever you normally run. I've been running 40:1 caster 927 with good results with mine.
@alexandercopeland2849 thanks for the tip. Why do you say this? Was that your experience with this saw and bar combo? Why would they sell it with a bar it can't fully oil?
Hi Tinman, love from the UK, am learning so much from you, thanks for all the effort you put in for us all. Have a neotec 660 on order from a guy in the States I found on eBay - he puts big cylinders on them and does a bit of work on the piston, intake and exhaust but not the transfers or muffler - I will open up muffler to 60-70% but not do anything else. Hope I end up with a good one!! Have a load of 4-5 foot dead ash to cut for next years firewood stock. After watching your channel I wonder if I should change the cylinder before even running it for smaller bore/higher quality? Or just run it and see what happens!
@@tinmanssaws i was thinking more in terms of building a stroker crank , rather than replacing a bad one ...... it would be nice to take a crank with a failed big end bearing ( that would normally be regarded as trash ) experiment on it and then assemble it it with a fresh rod and bearings
They are cheap hp. I just snagged a 660. Will help keep some wear off my smaller saws on the real big stuff. Also a great opportunity for someone to really learn the ins and outs of small engine repair and have cheap parts to fix mistakes. I think anyone whos making a living with a saw would know enough that these arent for them.

I love most of your videos, but I hate hearing you telling people to support Chinese junk. Those saws always have problems, and are poorly built, probably by some 4 year old. Go buy a used, reputable branded saw. At least when you fix it, you’ll have a quality saw, manufactured by a reputable company. Stop supporting these Chinese knockoff companies. Edit* that’s awesome how you go through the parts of the saw and basically call them garbage haha.
I have 2 farmertec a 365 and I bought the g372 just recently my 365 I have used for five years and cut a lot of wood with I live in wyoming and the only good wood here is different pines it burns fast so I need alot of wood every year

But if I have a problem with a saw I just fix it, if your depending on one of these Chinese saws buy 2 and work on them yourself, its not really worth it to pay someone to do it.
it looks a little warmer in the shop today buddy
Fires roaring today for sure
@@tinmanssaws I can usually tell when I can't see your breath. check out my snowstorm videos, we got hit hard
Crankcase volume is a big reason for short blow down . I found that oud with my 590 so the case got stuffed and it screams like a wild ape now .
I'd say theyd be fine for what I do
How are the aftermarket rear handles for the 288. I found one running for cheep with a broken handle
Arnt power saws just fun to work on,collect and buck with? Nice video thanks brother
I have a G444 for a couple years now,had to replace the oiler with a stock Stihl one but other than that lots of power in this saw.Imalso have a G372xp saw, oil leaks bad so an oiler is in its future. But lots of power, for how long we’ll see.
Just bought one of these, the third gen g372xp
Would you pull it down and inspect it before pulling that handle?
I really want to port it but you say they nickel chips for memory.
Tossing weather to just buy a hyway pop up bid bore kit for it and run that?
I would probably only use it a few hours a month
👍👍👍👍 thanks for the video
Great Vid!! Take er' Easy!!
Hey just looking for some info I recently got my hands on a john Deere CS 71 but I think the compression is shot is there a rebuild kit available
I built one of these, the only part I added was a Caber piston ring. It runs great but it has less power than my OEM 372xp. So if you want a 20lb saw with less power than a 72cc saw this is the saw for you.
My buddy bought a g372xp pro version. We are going to do a side by side tear of it compared to my built 365. I have no doubt my 365 will kill it!
Have you checked into the offshore OEM Husqvarna 288 machines that are still sold in the Philippines, Thailand, etc?
We have 4 or 5 Farmertec saw, just like you said fun toys, but can not hold up to 8-10 hours a day 5 -6 days a week of cutting.
👍
Hi tinman I'm waiting on blown up 570xp what do you think of 575 build, kit from wolfcreek ?
How do you feel about the farmmac/Neotec saws?
How would the saw stand up running an Alaskan mill?
Hey Tinman. How’s it going brother. Do you have any interest in porting my stihl 362 C-M? I clear cut cedars, on steep side hills, for prescribed burns.
Good vid man
Let's hear more about blowdown on the 288. Check out Neotec. The Neotec cylinders look better than Farmertec on the 2 I've seen.
Would you use farmertec cases for a husky 395xp?
If that's all I could afford sure why not? There cases seem to be ok from what I've seen and experienced.
What says the Tinman about Farmertec carbs
The metal the chinese used is muck cheaper than OEM. I have a Husky 50 I bought in about 1985. The only non original motor parts are the plug and fuel line. It’s on bar number 4 and about chain number 45-50.
There will never be a Holtzfforma that lasts that long.
Now if you want to change the rotating assy and carb with OEM it will last a lot longer.
I just got a husqvarna 266 I think. Everything shows its a 266xp by what I've learned from your videos on the 200s series. It has a s224 tiltson. Does that sound right for the saw?
Enjoy your videos. I have an older 266, can you recommend the parts for a big bore conversion? Looking for a little more power than stock.
Meteor or Hyway is what I usually run on those.
You can bolt on a 272xp jug and slug on that chassis - you’ll need the 272xp intake though
I like Husqvarna and Stihl
Those kits are great for what they are but if you’re going to run the snot out of one I would go OEM
How do you feel about the New West cylinder kits from Wolf Creek? I only ask because that's all I can really find for my old 262xp. Thanks.
Haven't tried one of those yet. Their cranks are good.
You are your name. Thanks for the honesty.
Are the ones already built any better? Stihl 034 and ms 460, are what I run,
Buy a $150 Echo CS-620 piston/cylinder and send him that Timberwolf, it will be a good saw that will take a beat down!!
I run 40:1 on everything.
If you got the 660 go with a 32" bar. Would run out of bar oil to fast.
@alexandercopeland2849 thanks for the tip.
Why do you say this? Was that your experience with this saw and bar combo? Why would they sell it with a bar it can't fully oil?
How is that baby girl and mom doing Tinman.
I hate watching those cookie cutting saws. I agree work saws are what it’s all about not how fast or how hard it pulls
Or just run it and see what happens!
even the big boys get it wrong my oem 372xp lasted 3 days
any idea who else is manufacturing cranks besides farmertek and husky ? might be worthwhile trying to source someone else .
NWP are good cranks. You can get them from Wolf Creek
@@tinmanssaws do you know of a source of new connecting rods and big end bearings for husky cranks ?
@@charlesboston1 that stuff isn't really sold separate.
Usually you'd just replace the whole crank if the bearing and rod are bad
@@tinmanssaws i was thinking more in terms of building a stroker crank , rather than replacing a bad one ...... it would be nice to take a crank with a failed big end bearing ( that would normally be regarded as trash ) experiment on it and then assemble it it with a fresh rod and bearings
If I had a dollar for every time he picked up that rag and wiped his hands, I could almost afford a name brand powerhead.
It’s like the old saying go’s-you only cry quietly once and don’t wast your hard earned money on cheep knock off stuff

Worst thing to happen to the industry, the amount of times I've been and seen others screwed with China parts on saws sold as OE is unreal.
$60 new motor for these clones so i feed it the beans from a cold start 😆
These are for guys just sarting out needing a okish saws until they can afford a much nicer saw.
They are great learning tools for sure
I built a g372xp for a guy and he wanted to use it to make enuff $$$ to get himself a new Husqvarner 572xp. So far so good 😊
It seems like a liability for you to put your name on them. It makes a lot of sense to put your name, your time into something into that is gonna work well for the customer
I bought a 365 clone it was absolutely junk sold it at a loss would hardly run once it was got it was useless
The dumb thing is my 372 holes farmer runs harder and faster than my 372 husky
Well I didn’t want you porting my saw anyway
OEM has QUALITY CONTROL, Unnamed Parts can be a ???, because of the Unknown!!! OEM QC has testing, extreme and has the 3 F's = Form, Fit and Function!!! To alter a Clones could have the 3 F's but I wont spell it out the same on you friends @Tinman's saws channel, ha ha ha!!!
I have 2 farmertec a 365 and I bought the g372 just recently my 365 I have used for five years and cut a lot of wood with I live in wyoming and the only good wood here is different pines it burns fast so I need alot of wood every year
👍
