  • Buckle up and get ready for ANOTHER never-before seen shop tour! (Check out the Tornos shop tour as well). This time, we're headed to Kern in Germany to tour their K1 AND K2 factory. I'd like to thank Simon Eickholt, CEO at Kern Microtechnik, for taking the group of us around the Kern K1 factory. He imparted so much knowledge on and off camera, and we were very grateful to get to spend a few hours with him and members of his team, including Marvin (who helped me make a knife in the day 1 video). Be sure to check out the rest of the videos created about this trip, they can be found in the cards of this video or on our TH-cam channel.

What you are seeing here is an example of doing business the non-american way. I guarantee you there is no CEO and board that are leeching millions and billions of dollars in profits out of this company, making decisions based on what will improve their stock price this quarter. This is illustrated by the comments about the dedicated workstations, quality of toilet paper, employee facilities, dedication to past customers and their old equipment and non-toxic work environment. It is obvious that they are not run by the mantra of "IF your not growing, your dying". You can see this through the comment the sales guy made about only producing 50 machines a year, so they can assure high quality for their customers and allowing for resources to be available if their customers need something special. There is an obvious vision for longevity and quality over massive growth and profit extraction. This way of doing business means that you company will be around, serving customers and employees for a millennia and more.

The 8:50 discussion ... yes you can make a machine out of Invar but in the end, aluminium gives you more control and in the end just slightly more precision (i mean ultra ultra precision) if you do the cooling right.. slightly unintuitive but we've made the most precise stuff with aluminium. Of course the ultimate material would be diamond and I wait for the day when we can make large structural parts out of big blocks of possibly monocrystalline diamond... unmatched heat conductivity and thermal expansion. There are composites being made with diamond that show some promise but I think it won't work out at the end.. you need the real thing :D

10:50 According to the numbers given, the cooling removes (4200 Joule/(K*kg))*(0.1K)*(1 kg/L)*(160 L/min) / (60 s/min) = 1120 Watts of heat. Since this keeps the temperature of the machine constant, that must be equal to the maximum electric power dissipated in the motors of the machine.

John, Switzerland and Germany are a little bit warmer in climate than Canada. Plus in the winter the sky lights might get completely covered by snow. On top of that the winter days are so short. Maybe extra efficient LED lighting might be a good alternative to the skylights. Have to say that sky lights are very nice when conditions are right.

It's flaked with an electric flaker which is odd for a machine bed as it is done to retain oil although sometimes done to give a scraped look to ground machinery. That's an EDM machine though so not one of theirs.

hey John, I feel your pain when you see those skylights in these factories in Europe but not here in USA. Buildings in USA were LEEDS certified without a single skylight. This is not new though. Look at the old photos of the early FORD Motor Co. and you will find hundreds of the roof windows. Something you should seriously look at that will blow your mind is the German PassivHaus or Swiss Minergie-P concept for you place.

16:50 The difference is that in NA the dollar is the bottom line, minimum in maximum out profit is the deciding factor in success. As for other places pride in ones work and longevity is the goal. Not to buy a new machine in 5 years but to keep that same machine top of the line for as long as possible. Na will eventually be nothing but idea makers for the rest of the world to execute due to sheer excessive profit mongering
