In the late 1950's the like-new J Class 4-8-4's, owned by the Norfolk & Western, found themselves on their last duties hauling short passengers and local freights before finally being retired and eventually scrapped due to the advent and arrival of first generation diesels. Only one member of the iconic J Class avoided that fate, which is preserved and operated by the Virginia Museum of Transportation, and that's #611. Joined by her smaller and much older counterpart at the Strasburg Railroad, M Class 4-8-0 #475 is dressed up as sister engine #382, famous in O. Winston Link's photographs of the Abingdon Branch of the Norfolk & Western, as a part of Lerro Photography's Photo Extravaganza weekend. Both engines are hauling consists similar to the ones the Mighty J Class and the Venerable M Class might have pulled, such as the Virginia Creeper for the 382, or perhaps a short freight out of Crewe, VA for the 611. Enjoy the sights, sounds, and experience brought to you by Blue Comet Productions!
This video was filmed on October 6th, 2019.

Amazing trains👍👍👍
1. I like train Journey especially steam hauling Express & Passenger trains.
2. As my father was Station Master under Southern Railway (Madras),& during my childhood, on school holidays, I used to stay with my father in the Railway Station to which he was posted. I was enjoying all types of Steam hauling trains moving on up & down track enroute to the Railway Station.
3. I also had a chance to visit old Signal manual Cabins & also Computerised Electronic Signal cabins till my father got superannuation retirement.
4. As Railway employees are getting free Pass for travel we used to visit Tourist & Pilgrim spots on family tour during School holidays.
5. Nowadays, we could be able to see such different type of Steam Engines in Rail Museums in the country.

I'm not a big N&W 611 fan, but this video was badass!
Even though the actual locomotive seen here is #475, cosmetic changes were made to the locomotive to represent the original #382 including modifying the smoke arrestor and the whistle. The whistle used on the #475 actually came from the original #382. That whistle was made by an engineer named B.T. Nichols and was designed out of an old WWII bombshell and a Norfolk & Western Hooter style base. I ran across a Santa Train photo of a #382 consist from the early '50s in Green Cove Va. Nichols was in the photo as well as conductor Wilford.
#611 in Lionel O Gauge was presented on a plaque to Stuart Saunders, President of the N&W, ultimately the Penn Central by a Va. Chamber of Commerce in appreciation. My dad bought this piece at the end of the Penn Central Silver Auction in 1973. It went back to another collector in the late 2000s. My dad paid $100 for the piece.
Wonderful video.

I love steam locomotives with deep whistles like Big Boy and 611
That would be the Hancock Longbell 3 chime. 844, 3985, 4014, 611 and others all use this same whistle.
I've heard the Reading 6-chime called "God's whistle," and I agree. Today is Friday, October 11, 2019, and I will be there, hopefully to hear both whistles, as the Strasburg 90 has a RDG 6.

A streamlined passenger steam locomotive pulling a freight train? Never thought I'd see that.
Also, 475 just looks tiny by comparison to 611.
OwlEye2010 Southern Pacific 4449 has done it before, so has Union Pacific 844
@@robertbrotherton1375 844 seems to me the kind of 4-8-4 that can do both freight and passenger and look natural doing so.
With 611 and 4449, it just looks kind of odd. Cool, but odd. I guess knowing they were more geared towards passenger service is what kind of throws me off. (Also, I'm pretty sure I'd get a similar sentiment from others regarding UP 3985 and 4014 pulling passenger trains when they were more geared towards freight).
OwlEye2010 What's amazing is that 4449 has only 17,000 pounds of tractive effort less than Challenger despite having eight wheels and challenger having twelve. That means 4449 could pull almost as much as Challenger, which is a LOT.
Also, you’ll find it’s got nothing to do with gearing, as steam locomotives lack gears. It’s about three things - boiler pressure, stroke distance, and wheel diameter. 4449 has 80” wheels and operates at 300 PSI with a 32" stroke, which means that it starts slower, but can go faster and has more power. Challenger has 69” wheels and operates at 280 PSI with a 32” stroke. That means it starts faster, but can’t go as fast and loses power more rapidly as it speeds up.
Freight trains are designed to go slower, which is why locomotives like the challenger are good for it, though 4449 and 844 can do it just fine, as can any locomotive. The opposite is true of passenger trains - they go fast and should start smoothly, so 4449 and 844 are great for it, but challenger can do it as well. You can use almost any locomotive to move any load, it’s just a matter of doing it in the best way possible.
Interesting trivia - SP 4449 was used to pull freight a lot of times back when it was originally in use by Southern Pacific. It proved to be very effective at doing so.
@@robertbrotherton1375 Huh. That's interesting.
Also (and I feel *really* dumb for asking this), you know when I was saying "geared", I meant like "more suited for this-or-that", right?
The 611 was built both for freight and passengers
In 1959, the mainline steam has completed giveaway to diesel power on The N&W, However, the sole survivor of N&W J class 611 was selected to pull a "Farewell to Steam" Excursion, the trip ran from Roanoke, Virginia to Williamson, West Virginia and return.
