- BAFTA-winning writer Sally Wainwright (Last Tango in Halifax, Happy Valley) and star Suranne Jones (Doctor Foster) talk about the true story behind their new BBC drama that revolves around a remarkable and unlikely love affair, and takes place in the turbulent world of Britain’s industrial revolution.
Set in 1832 in West Yorkshire, Gentleman Jack is based on the diaries of Anne Lister, a landowner and industrialist who is often described as ’the first modern lesbian’. After years of exotic travel, Anne returns to Halifax, determined to transform the fate of her family and their faded ancestral home Shibden Hall - and to find herself a wife.

Breaking the 4th wall in a period drama series is a bold and fantastic idea, the best way to put Anne Lister's diaries to good use. Also the bouncy music choice and witty lines are so refreshing. S02 plzzzzzz
Yes, this. They did the 4th wall breaks very well. I'm not a fan of them normally, but it works perfectly in this, especially in ep.3, hilarious.
I actually think it’s becoming rather cliché. I first became aware of this device being used again in television during the first season of “House of Cards“ on HBO. I think we will see, in the future, this dead horse being beaten much more.
4th wall breakage in this case is a tip of the hat to the Anne Lister Diaries. She shared her life in those words and now she's sharing her life on the screen. I think it is a perfect use of the convention. Also, the 4th wall breakage is not over-used, and that makes each instance quite special and often, when appropriate, even funnier. Isn't it! Just absolutely wonderful! After just watching both seasons the last three days I am overwhelmed with awe too. I walked into a store this morning and the first clerk I saw had a name plate on, 'Anne L.'....OMG....she found me! My heart was filled with joy for the day. Sounds crazy but it was truly breathtaking. May Anne Lister live forever!!!
I so hope for a Gentleman Jack Series 3. Series 2 was wonderful as it delved further into her character.
I've only just saw the series. I am trying to recover from being riveted to the screen. I bought the series from Amazon in full thus did not have to wait for an episode. OH MY! Suranne had me all the way, she channeled what I thought Anne Lister was: confident, strong, a woman who loved women. I have replayed many scenes but one that I cannot not view often enough is the scene in Ep. 8 and the dialog that takes place between Walker & Lister near the pit. As a lesbian who desires this quality of acting, I was totally convinced the acting of both took me into reality of life. It was tender love and both actors expressions caught by the camera/director simply swept me into nostalgia. Suranne's face when she said 'Don't hurt me.' Gosh. The words coming from Ann Walker was such loving dialog. Her character shone even more so, came alive more deeply. I loved seeing that happen. The entire cast were outstanding. Never a dull moment, so I think very much like Lister's life. Thank you for your vision Sally Wainwright. I am one happy lesbian watching Suranne become Lister. Wish I had series like this growing up but better late than never... hugs to all. Suranne's expression as Lister will linger for a long time. Please as the series advances do not take us to Lister's death, let us know her life, end it with love and not sadness so I can enjoy rewatching this series for years to come. To restate: I can handle the reality of Lister and her passing, make S3.

People who watch shows want to identify with a certain character (the main character would be the best of course) and people, who are straight can not really identify with Anne Lister because this show is mainly about a love stroy between two women. I think that's absolutely understandable. I'm a lesbian myself and I don't really like watching movies/shows,where there are only straight couples just because I can't identify with them. I think that's what the person behind this comment meant - that this show is so great that even people who think "Meh, this is about a lesbian maybe this series is nothing for me" should watch it!
There's NO other person who could have played Anne better! We're totally HOOKED! Have watched series 1 many many times! LOVE IT! :-) bring on series 2

I agree with all the comments about this show. My husband and I are hooked and are watching each episode the minute it's available. We were describing it to some friends and I said, "We're both in love with Anne." And my husband said, "We don't know if we want to 'be her' or 'do her'", and it's true! This show comes together on every level. Brilliant acting, writing, music... everything!

I watched Gentleman Jack bc I love Suranne Jones as an actress. I was so surprised at her ability of acting. I enjoyed the quirky attitude, educated and very savvy Anne and I laughed so much especially the ballroom scene, her walking and that headdress and had such a good time watching Gentleman Jack.. Great job for Suranne!!

This is possibly the best new show I've watched... Anytime anyone asks me what they should watch, I say "Gentleman Jack." I think I'm a little bit in love with Suranne Jones... (please don't tell my husband.)
The first episode was like a punch in the gut for me, the scene where she was kneeling and crying to the lady, damn! that was too relatable for me.
This show and Anne Lister have become my newest obsession!

Hands down, one of the best TV series around. Sally Wainwright’s obvious passion for this woman’s story is amazing and inspiring. The episodes never seem long enough, and the acting is all on point and so perfectly cast. Suranne Jones is a remarkable actress who brings Anne Lister gloriously to life. And Gemma Whalen was already an favorite actress...

This show is awesome, I've watched all 3 episodes 4 times now. Suranne Jones and Sophie Rundell are out of this world the whole cast is amazing. Thank you Sally Wainwright for bringing this project to life. I hope there is a green light for a second season. The whole production is absolute quality, well done.

I came to this series after seeing Suranne play "Idris"/The Tardis in Doctor Who (in a wonderful story written by Neil Gaiman). I quickly realised that an actor who can so perfectly play the role of an alien pan-dimensional space-time vehicle with a complex, possessive-but-not-jealous love for its pilot/"thief", can play just about *anybody*, and I would lap it all up, utterly convinced! =:o}
I loved that first season of Gentleman Jack to bits, and am delighted it's finally back for a 2nd season (and damn and blast Covid-19 for all the delays!).
Also, I can't help noticing that Suranne's portrayal of Anne Lister is more than just a little bit "Doctorish"... Could she be our Doctor Number 14, perhaps? ... As soon as she's got recording the 3rd (and probably final) season of Gentleman Jack done, of course! =:o]

I just saw season 2 episode 7 or 8 its fantastic!!! Love following Anne in her life and love the look into life of that time. I hope it goes for many more seasons. LOVE IT!!!!!

The introduction of *Anne Lister* was filmed in *Little Germany, Bradford.*
Those same streets have been used in at least 20 different productions in the last 10 years alone with the some of the most recent ones being *Downton Abbey* (2019), *Peaky Blinders* and *The ABC Murders.*
She parks the stagecoach on *Cater Street* which is around the back of:
Tommy's factory in *Peaky Blinders,*
The theatre exterior in *The ABC Murders,* and
The place where the Beligians are hiding out in the flashback scenes of *The ABC Murders.*
Brillant drama and acting Most certainly deserves an award. Suranne definately deserves recognition . Loved the theme tune too.
Wonderful series. In this interview, I appreciate the sympathy for younger sibling, Marian. Her story is that of many of us, and ought to be told as well.

Season 2 is a must already!! Great show in all aspects but especially that it is a brilliant dramatisation which is finally doing justice to an extraordinary character like Anne Lister. She had to become an icon decades ago. Very fine acting from the actors' side, and such delicate precision at every detail. Every single episode of this production is a treasure :)

I, absolutely, LOVE how Sally becomes tongue-tied with excitement about this project, about the journals, about Anne Lister, about the filmed series....She is doing a brilliant job and I am equally impressed with Suranne Jones for "getting it" even though she is a non-gay woman......HBO could have several years of this series if they so choose, BUT in my opinion, some sort of continuance needs to happen, either by video or the written diaries so we know all of Anne Lister that there is to know. The only thing I worry about in the written or video continuance would be to "keep it honest".....

In love with this production. Just binge-watched it this past weekend. Brilliant piece! First time I've seen Suranne and she is mesmerizing (perfect choice...PERFECT I tell you). Anne Lister was an amazing woman and so glad that her journals were decoded and her life brought to life, and in such a relevant time in our history. And the music......................love love love the jaunty theme. I rather think I'd like this as my theme music as I purposely make my way thru the office LOL :) So nice to see Gemma (formerly Yara Gregjoy in GOT)...the sister dynamic is quite hilarious. And I think the use of Suranne looking into the camera directly at times is quite engaging. I've heard there will be a second season and I am delighted. Well done!

I’ve watched and then rewatched this first season a few times. I like period pieces-and then seeing the story of a brilliant woman, way ahead of her time, in the past is quite intriguing. I’m completely taken with Suranne’s portrayal of Anne Lister.
I just love how the character engages with the camera - a touch of "Alfie" perhaps - with a saucy conspiritorial wink !
When I see these interviews and can feel the excitement about Anne Lister through Sally and Suranne, if I ever got to actually SEE the diaries, I think I wouldn't quite know how to pay homage to my lesbian sister.....I think I would be tempted to genuflect or something like that.....What a BRILLIANT piece of work by Sally and an AMAZING find at this time in our history...
Even as the straight testosteron monster that i am, i can not other but love this show. Very engaging. Her theme melody alone makes me rock my feet and get anxious to see what happens next. The breaking of the barrier to the viewer i also like, it isn't too much and quite different still to how it is done in f.e. Deadpool :) aaah so very different genres, well then again she is a super hero.
I couldn’t agree more. At first I only came for the gay but the storyline is getting ReAlLy interesting after Monday’s episode. Can’t wait!

A fascinating story and fortunate that Anne Lister was such an interesting character to carry 8 episodes.
Another excellent BBC costume drama with a lead character beautifully played by Suranne Jones and an excellent supporting cast.
Anne Lister wasn’t the only famous Lesbian in history - Lady Hestor Stanhope and the Ladies of Llangollen deserve more recognition for their place in Lesbian history.

This is an amazing expose' of a life condition to which I was exposed in the late 60's / early 70's. As a man and father of a teen daughter, her peer group included a few unsure young ladies some of whom came out to me because parents would probably have not approved. I am totally enjoying the character and feel her unrequited sexual need as if it were me. Rock on the character, Ann Lister, a true pioneer.
Watched the first episode after not knowing who the show was about. The lead actress does an amazing job! I’m sure the next episodes will be just as strong...if not more.

Love the show! We live in the U.S., and I stumbled upon the show on HBO. I've watched the entire series twice, in a matter of a week ! Amazing storyline, out-of-this-world acting...chomping at the bit for Season 2!!
The staff at Shibden are superb, had the most wonderful day there recently. Please visit, 4 quid it's a bargain. The Bankfield museum just down the road houses all the costumes from the show. There's a wonderful cafe on site in the park as well.
My dad and I went there last Christmas on the 24th! They were so kind and gracious. The estate is so stunning!
A terrific story, beautifully researched and adapted. Full of admiration for actresses who don't mind adopting an ungainly walk, ridiculous hairstyle or severe outfit. Season 2? Yes please!
I just love the way Sally "lights up" whilst speaking of Anne Lister. I think she has a great crush! She is so respectful of women, in general. I respect her greatly for that!

@@michcookies The scene where Lister is dressed to the nines, in a different sort of way from other scenes, and is strolling up the hillside, where she then views Ann Walker painting the historic ruins in the distance and ponders Ann, I believe, is a nod to Mr. Darcy's infamous wet shirt scene when he is strolling across the grounds before seeing Lizzie.
It's a really beautiful show. I love the relationships--all of them, quite frankly, but the relationship between Anne and Ann is so real and touching! It becomes just another love story, which is brilliant because it's as it should be. Though of course, the relationship, for its time, is extraordinary because the women are, but I love the writing and the acting is brilliant!

I'm sure that *HBO* won't give you anything without the *BBC's* permission.
It's funny how many American networks like *HBO* (who will try to claim at least 9 British shows as their own in 2019) will upload a trailer advertising a British show as their own, and then it will suddenly disappear a few weeks later.
I'm almost certain that the ones which get taken down have been threatened with legal action from the actual owners of the show, like the *BBC* in this case.
It’s a money thing, do you think Gentleman Jack just showed up on HBO without permission and a deal? I love British shows, wish we got more here in the States.

My problem with them is that they try to claim all the credit for those shows, when it's the British networks who actually commissioned, funded, produced, and own the show.
There's at least 13 American companies who are constantly trying to claim British shows as their own, when their only involvement with those shows was to throw a bit of money at the British networks who produced the show so they can be labelled as co-producers, or simply pay to distribute the show outside the UK.
Is it a coincidence that the *HBO* trailer for this show got removed from TH-cam?
Or do you think my theory is correct, that they were forced to remove it by the *BBC* who actually commissioned, funded, and produced the show, as they were taking all the *BBC's* credit?
Daniel Gardecki I’m not sure of all that’s going on with the business end of HBO and the BBC. I’m just glad we’re able to view your shows here. The production quality is first rate on both Gentlemen Jack and Jamestown, the two shows I like at the moment. Will Jamestown get another season? In no way was I trying to claim that HBO created Gentleman Jack, it’s just so happens to be the channel we get it on here in the States. And if it goes into another season here or there I will be looking forward to watching it.
