Orientation and mobility teachers are called specialists for a reason. Trainees log at least 100 hours blindfolded on city streets to walk miles in their students’ shoes - and teach from experience

I find it so perplexing that there is such negativity surround one having or using a long cane. i am grateful and have a peace of mind having one. i have been asked by relatives ,in laws and people why? My husband strongly despises them and looks at them as a crutch. I tell him like you said the very good point of confidence ,self esteem I think if you have confidence in your self prior to having the need for one helps. trusting in yourself. my instructors didn't allow me to go out on the street blindfolded.i think they knew of my basic anxiety and depression.
    i was diagnosed years ago.
I also have Retinopathy of prematurity.
I was on the bus recently and I have functioning vision blurred but only in one eye. i am nearsighted and farsighted light sensitive too. i had a panic attack crossing streets here in southern Arizona prior to using a cone.
well getting back to the bus. i was sitting on the bench we have horrible buses which face the aisles. instead of forward. When facing forward i feel like I am in my. own bit of space.
This lady grabbed my cane apparently looking for a pole instead.
Anyone smart would know of the ball tip.
She used it like a support cane.
I thought she could have used me for falling into my lap.
I asked her if she was ok?
i wish I knew how to do TH-cam videos.
let me know what you think
i did notify my O&M instructor too.
she said hold it at a angle approximately 45% angle.
    from toes to back.
    it was a rigid.
a public service message would be fantastic. i went to a Bernie Sanders event in the fall and it was evening . the park i went to I had never been to before. I was by myself. it was getting dusk . i worked with following the crowd we appeared to be walking in a roundabout sense. there was only some sidewalks and lighting was poor. the ground was gradually becoming very hilly and many slopes.
believe it or not I kept up with the crowd and enjoyed the event and was needing to find.my way to the bus route and I got out of the park fine and only needed help finding the bus stop. i hadn't been on that line before. The people were very polite and nice ,civil and helpful. later I found I was with a crowd of 1300. Travel in Europe paid off as a kid.
    😃😃😃😃😃

What is the education required to become an o&m instructor? I'm hearing conflicting requirements. Some are saying bachelor's and certification others are saying Masters and certification.

it probably varies but so far, I know Wmu offers a Master'ss degree in OM with an internship followed by a national certification test to be come an OM. I am currently working on the distance ed program but I'll have to be in-person for six weeks summer 25. I just finished my first semester where I took braille and OM Children. BRL was my favorite! but OM Children was very interesting as well.

How does an orientation mobility specialist instructor teach and help a partually sighted adult person with cataracts that is unsure and scared to be around traffic and on the buses when she or he is using a white cane like myself who has had to rely on family or a friend throughout the last three months in 2022?

I totally understand your fear of traffic, I am VI due to Stargardt disease. I am currently studying at WMU in the O&M program and I can't wait to finish thee program and begin working with the BVI community..
