I was honestly willing to (and did) overlook almost all of its faults for the subject matter alone. I'm a huge history buff and ESPECIALLY crazy about all things Rome, so it was very refreshing to see a new take on the time period.
Don't get me wrong there are many Rome themed games and some great mods, but most of them are either city builders, grand strategy or RTS. To truly get a story based Roman hack and slash was a breath of pure fresh air. I would be willing to throw ungodly amounts of money at "Skyrim in Rome" or "GTA: Rome (lol)" style games. And you know what, I don't think I'm alone in that.
It's such a fascinating time period with sooooo much potential that its honestly heartbreaking how underused it is. It genuinely makes me wish I was either filthy rich or a developer so I could make my own projects happen, so many great ideas there. Imagine this: A Roman era RPG, where you can choose your character's social class, skills, personality traits, and then go be the next Caesar or see what life was for the average legionary, trade, wage campaigns, build your family's name. All that is easily, EASILY 100s of hours of gameplay.

    • @Tewlipz
      @Tewlipz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

So about your last paragraph, Expeditions: Rome does come pretty close to all of that. It has very solid mechanics, it doesn't have AS much freedom in creating your character as you put forth here, but it's a solid party-based and turn-based RPG title that doesn't have magic.
It also lets you command a legion and take it into battle to conquer territory.
I can highly recommend it, even if the story at times annoyed me.

I wouldn't be surprised if the devs of god of war 2018 took a lot of inspiration from this game, the tight and close up views like the camera angles especially during cut scenes, the linear but vast scale of levels, the gameplay elements, the quick time events, the conveniently marked and placed climbable spots, and visual style of the graphics. It's just my thoughts though.

It was SOOO inceribly short but sweet.
A very good flagship that was terribly marketed.
The whole Damoceles thing should have been Pushed a lot more.
The magic of a mythic figure come to life felt so intriguing when you did get there.
The game was very much missing a great anatagonist as well as protagonist.
Often felt like the set piece was the main character which will often turn into "now that it's on fire, what is my motivation? "

Was it historically accurate? Marginally, honestly, no, not at all. Was it fun and did I somehow still feel like like a Roman Legionnaire? Hell yeah. Not every game needs to be a 10/10 with a massive story that challenges my philosophical and ethical beliefs, sometimes I just want to swing a sword at groups of enemies. It's the same reason Space Marine 2 is a good game to me, I don't always need eSports level multiplayer games or expansive RPGs with 100s of hours of content. Sometimes a 5-8 hour story is great.

I‘m literally playing it now (for the first time). Yes, 10 years after release 😂. My verdict so far - for a 10yo game it‘s still very beautiful and cinematic. The gameplay is kinda simple, yes. Though I‘m kinda glad they didn‘t try to turn it into a „God of Dark Souls War“ xbox edition with absurd epic dark fantasy components. They kept it kinda historically and physically accurate, where the majority of warriors, including yourself, do not have a health pool of like three thousand tons (even the beefiest berserker would go down after like 3-4 accurate sword strikes IRL, right?). Also, while having a fighting system which is kept fairly simple, it does not overstay its welcome in terms of length, so it doesn‘t really get old as its quite short for that. Bottomline - it is fun, which is the main goal of any video game. And yes, sometimes short and relatively uncomplicated video games with simple but flashy and gory action is exactly what you need after a hard day, without having to commit yourself to a Darksoul-Witcherish open world behemoth with complex inventories, craftings, side quests, decision trees and like 150+ hour long main campaigns… :)
PS: funnily, the gold ingame currency, as I found out, can be „bought“ for absolutely zero point nil real life currency in the Xbox store nowadays! Was kinda fun to get all the executions right away 😅
PSS: it is a bummer though, that they haven‘t fixed the bug with executions still going through if you hit yellow Y instead of blue X or vice versa during the execution Animation. Would have brought at least some challenge in the fighting system :) still fun though

I completely understand the points you are making but often times I look in gaming for an immersive experience with a great setting and a good story and I think Ryse checks these boxes fairly well. I enjoy good gameplay and I wouldn't say its exactly bad, just a bit repetitive, which is a fine lining but they made it work. I may be easily impressed but I never could wait for next badass brutal execution to make these barbarians fall like dominos. Always felt like an overpowered roman warmachine sent by the gods, so good.

Yo the MP is fun as hell! You really gotta find dedicated people to get games, because some can last for 40 mins and it has great gimmicks. I would especially recommend playing on PC, where it’s easier to organize lobbies. It’s regularly on sale for $2.50.

Oh absolutely I personally would love to see a sequel, the thing is thankfully it is not up to Microsoft here as they do not own the IP, it is up to Crytek and it is theirs. Whether they bring it on or not will be on them. One I personally want to see more though is a Quantum Break 2, that one is unfortunately owned by Xbox and it looks like they don't have any intention on making a second one which is a huge bummer.

In a lot of ways though it's so refreshing. For a game that came out almost ten years ago it has many things that most games don't have now. Its a hybrid of both new and old school. Beautiful graphics and awesome cinematics and sequences that modern games have and they honestly hold up, combined with old school hack and slash fun. I like that it's short and linear too, that's so rare these days that you can get a pick up and play game that doesn't need endless consumption. This game still feels fresh compared to many other games now funny enough. Not everything gotta be open world imo

I remember there were a couple random things you could do with the Kinect in this game. It was pretty cool, but I remember thinking there was going to be a lot more to it lol. Like I wanted to be half fighting with the controller and half fighting with my hands and the Kinect. Maybe one day we will have such games friends.
And the multiplayer in Ryse was awesome at launch when there were a lot of people playing the game.

I like your videos and I usually agree with you, or see were you're coming from, but not on this one my man. All my friends that actually game have really different styles compared to me, but Ryse is the one game we can all say is just wildly fun. It makes you feel like a total badass, the other modes are awesome, and it's just an all around good time. If you want to ignore the colors you can, it just doesn't give you as good a score or look, and I mean there are only two colors... so it's not like hard to memorize. I just feel like the story was chill, but I've played it time, and time again, because of how fun it is, how simple it is to get, but a little tricky to master, online coop is fun n alive, and again, it just totally immerses you, and makes you feel like a total badass.

I think Ryse is underrated. It has a solid story, unique combat, and great graphics for an XB1 launch title. The multiplayer is a lot of fun too, I've been playing the multiplayer mode the last few days trying to get the rest of the achievements and reach Rank 150. Now is Ryse a Game of the Year worthy title...no, but I still think it's a game that's highly underrated. With that being said, Ryse imo is one of the most underrated Xbox exclusives of all-time.
