I've been an Arizona fan for almost 30 years so let me clarify that Arizona fans do not look at gabe York's college career as a failure. I always felt he should have played more than he did but he had a lot of talented guards ahead of him for most off his career. His Freshman year he backed up a future NBA SG (Nick johnson) and a talented senior transfer (mark lyons). Sophomore year he had another NBA level guard ahead of him in TJ McConnell, and still had johnson to compete with on a talented team that went to the elite 8. Junior year Nick Johnson went pro, but freshman Stanley johnson comes in and started. He ended up getting drafted 5th. Finally his senior year he gets minutes with McConnell and johnson gone, and he balls out. Second team all Pac 12 and arguably the best player on the team that year when he again shared the backcourt with 2 guys who did stints in the NBA (alonzo trier & kadeem allen). I give him credit for sticking it out when most guys would have transfers (and he strongly considered it). I get the blake comp because of the leaping ability but a better comp is another Arizona guard will Bynum who also had crazy bounce and transferred to georgia tech and took them to the final 4.
He went to the wrong college. It wasn’t that he wasn’t good or the coach wasn’t being fair but he was behind Nick Johnson for a year than behind T. J. McConnell until his senior year. If he just went to another school his career would have been better.
Crazy how your doing these “where they are now” with these studs from back in the day...Gives these kids motivation to grind & fuck the media cause it’s all a trap & Gabe York ain’t the only one from that class that was hyped thru the roof & now is overseas which isn’t bad tho
I used to love watching Gabe York highlights while I was in middle school and he was still in high school. The hype was obviously no cap worthy to the fullest.
gabe is from where im from ! he used to go to my high school & come practice w our team all the time in his early college days. granted he was in AZ but when he was in town he was in our gym every day💯💯💯 dude was fucking explosive.
Love your Content! I am a big fan of Josh Harrellson who played at Kentucky 2008-11 and had a cup of coffee in the NBA. Had an interesting high school and college career and now playing in Japan... i believe. Would love to see a video. Thanks!
I was at Arizona the same years Gabe was there, same class. His first 3 years we had STACKED teams and Sean Miller didn't think he was good enough on the defensive end the first year. The last year everyone was gone, Trier was a just a freshman so he was the go to guy.
He deserves to be in the league the NBA. In college the coach didn't make him a top priority although he should have been nevertheless he never complained about it and stayed the course.
This video could have easily been summed up, pointing out that he didn't develop as a PG. He did have an underwhelming NCAA career. I still route for him. He finally played in an NBA this season
People forget about my boy Gabe York, as much as I love the university of Arizona they didn’t make good as he could’ve been he shoulda went to Kansas or Louieville
"25ppg back then is insane" ........ You do realize HS ball players have been dropping 30+ or 40+ per game for decades right? Scoring a ton in HS isn't a "new" thing. Monta Ellis averaged 38 his Sr year in '05. OJ Mayo over 30 in '06. Teddy Dupay averaged 42ppg back in '98. Dajuan Wagner averaged 43 in '01. Anthony Pieper (who played at Marquette just before DWade got there) averaged 38 as a Sr in '93. I played at a mid-major D1 school, was only ranked 160th and I averaged 23 as a Sr with a career high of 56. (And that was in 1998) scoring in HS isn't something players "all of a sudden" started doing the last few years. In 3 years on Varsity, my career average was close to 20ppg and I still wasn't close to the conference all time leading scorer, I was #2 and about 600 points behind #1.......... current Virginia head coach Tony Bennett.
That's facts and now top high school players all team up at prep schools, meaning that they have to play a smaller role, which is why nowadays you don't see as many players averaging 30+ points.
Oh shit. I ain’t know Matt knew about gabe York. He was that dude at the time. It was really just his jumping ability. He had a Aite shot but his bunnies put him on another level. We definitely heard of him after hs tho, he just wasnt a superstar at Arizona
Went to the wrong school IMO seems like the Playing time was the issue He should’ve transferred if possible to a program that would’ve allowed him more mins sooner
I think his career was a case of a guy who had to play behind a bunch of pros. Also...there are many 4 and 5 star recruits that will never play in the NBA. He was a big recruit bit he wasn't even a Mcdonalds all American or a top flight 4 or 5 star so he didn't have one and done expectations. If you are playing pro ball anywhere you are still way better than the average guy...everybody on the roster at a place like Arizona was a big recruit
He was in the wrong system at Arizona at that time. And yes jumping dunking is cool but there are far greater players that made the NBA without having the ability to dunk. So athletically gifted is just that and still if he was on the right team he still would not have made it. If you watch his games his defense was not ver good and that is a serious detriment to whatever team he plus for.
Can u please do a dj Stephens video. Dude can jump out the gym. I'm subscribed so plz give my request higher consideration. I guarantee you will enjoy his story and has the potential to be one of your best videos.
