  • From poaching endangered shellfish to smoking quaaludes, this is the wild origin story of how meth took over South Africa.
The use of meth, known as Tik, has skyrocketed across South Africa. It's thought that the country might have one of the highest per-capita rates of crystal meth use on earth.
But the wildest twist in the tale is that this may have been ultimately caused by a secret weapons program run by the old apartheid regime itself.

Enjoying VICE marathon today. Your shows are amazing!
If you have interest, I would like to see interviews of people who use wheelchairs and what it is like. How do they get treated, what are the plusses and roadblocks of being disabled. There is a large variety of people who use wheelchairs and I think there is a need for people to know the challenges and the attitudes of people who do not using wheelchairs.
      Thank you VIce!

I was horrifically depressed since childhood. It was relentless. I assumed it would ultimately end me somehow. About twelve years ago I randomly accepted the offer from a friend of a few doses of mushrooms. I did them two consecutive nights alone. First night was pretty mild. The second night? Wow. I saw my depression from every angle, realized much. Next day: depression totally gone. Never came back, never coming back. It's like it's a forest far away I can remember, and could probably find again with enough effort, but it has zero impact on anything in my life or mind. They honestly saved my life and improved it immensely. I never did them
again, either. I wish there was a good,
organized way to administer them to people who would benefit from them.

Used to take Mandrax and Quaaludes a lot in my teens and 20s (I'm 54) and tbh methaqualone is infinitely more pleasurable than alcohol. Not hard to see why they were so popular - you'd get this warm, euphoric relaxation - like being drunk but without the unpleasant effects of drunkenness. They lasted maybe four to six hours with no hangover.
Mandrax was the trade name for Quaalude in the UK, South Africa, Australia, Asia. After Methaqualone was banned there was Doriden, (Glutetimide) which had the exact same effects but was banned by the late 1980s. Nowadays the closest thing is probably GHB, which feels very similar (except GHB makes people a lot hornier than Quaaludes ever did)
Interesting origin story: Quaalude was developed to allow doctors in wartime to get short periods of sleep but to be able to function if they had to be woken up, which was not remotely possible with barbiturates, chloral hydrate, or bromides - the other sleep drugs around at the time.

@@basilbyers5066 you should be able to figure out the difference between amphetamine salts and methamphetamine. No one treats ADHD with methamphetamine. There's a brand name methamphetamine tablet called Desoxyn which is rare and mainly prescribed for narcolepsy. Changing a molecule on a chain to create an entirely different compound is not a "different formulation." That being said, ADHD meds are also not to be trifled with and have led more than one person (hand raised) to eventually try meth.

Just remember to moderate, don't slam it, preferably eat it, and do regularly timed dosages.
Like a doctor's script. 15 mg 3x a day worked for me. But that was Desoxyn. Street meth is a little more tricky to regulate dosage, but its doable.
But, if you can't moderate, (you CAN, you're just not applying yourself) then I guess a lifetime without it is your lot.
And you will have to go to a shrink and get properly diagnosed for the undiagnosed ADHD you have, and get a legal script for the much less effective Adderall or Vyvanse, etc.
(Hold out for Desoxyn) But don't get your hopes up. Settle for modafinil.
      You'll be fine.

I love this series, this was another informative video but since you mentioned the gray area market of precursors from China, why not making a video digging deeper into that topic? Also another topic: why is Europe getting more and more shipments of very cheap and very potent ketamine in solid form (crystals) and the liquid medical grade ketamine is not as easy to come as in the past? Those are both topics that deserve to be investigated deeper, people want to know! :)

Ketamine now comes from China more often than not, the potent stuff around is usually research chemicals (2-FCDK, DCK, MXP etc etc). There are no liquid vials really anymore because India clamped down on it.

    • @constantlylearnandgrow3487
      @constantlylearnandgrow3487 ปีที่แล้ว +2

liquid ketamine is nothing else than solved ketamine crystals in a solvent. if you have it as a liquid it takes up a multitude of the space of just pure crystals and is therefore harder and more expensive to smuggle. Also the medicinal bottles are fragile and hard to transport in big quantity.

If you have something that you really want in your life, spend lots of time thinking about it. The more you think the more ideas will pop up the more creative your gonna start to get. Your subconscious mind doesn't care if your vision is crazy. It doesnt care if you dont know how to do it.
When you see a thing clearly in your mind, your creative "success mechanism" within you takes over and does the job much better than you could do it by conscious effort or willpower.
A different psychedelic from a different planet every nanosecond.
All sorts of dreams are possible.
The human nervous system cannot tell the difference between an "actual" experience and an experience imagined vividly and in detail.
Synthesize "experience," to literally create experience, and control it, in the laboratory of our minds.
A vision is a very emotional image, the most powerful image that you can come up with for yourself at this time. This vision will become like a hallucination in other peoples mind and this could be the cause of them creating extraordinary things.

Very interesting, and also quite shocking. I'm used to these type of news and documents, as may many others but it still gets hard to watch sometimes. I wish these people get help. People use drugs but nobody chooses addiction.

If twas all uncomplicated and legal still, everywhere there'd be no problems addiction, eah to ones own and it would still be but someone's little habit.

Have a friend who, in mid ‘00, spent a lot of time in first Amsterdam, where he did so much of what he called “Thai meth” that his heart now works at a small fraction of what it should. Apparently, that’s how he ended up in South Africa, by way of Asian meth in Amsterdam. He caught an infection in South Africa off the tik and mandrix and his arm swelled 4x its size and he had to be flown to a U.S. ICU for weeks to save his life. Don’t do Asian meth, and don’t go to South Africa and maybe Amsterdam you’ve been warned

As a Canadian, I wish our news networks would provide this type of info. At the very least, they could have reports such as these in the late night news programs, so kids and adolescents are not seeing them. I mean, War clips are on news programs ffs. Which is likely why there is soo much murders, mass shootings and other violent crimes nowadays. People are shown violence in the news day in and day out since the 90's, operation Desert Storm, first time live action war was televised. Before that we only seen recorded clips or documentaries...

Counterinsurgency doctrine has gone hand in hand with organized crime since even before the Cold War. The famous radical Tamil journalist Sivaram deeply researched and wrote about this for years. Check out the excellent biography, "Learning Politics from Sivaram", by Mark Whitaker. Also see Cockburn and St Clair's history of CIA covert operations, "Whiteout", and Alfred McCoy's magnum opus, "Politics of Heroin in Southeast Asia", among others on this subject.

'Ludes (methaqualone) were banned in USA in 1984 and illicit methaqualone in the states had essentially halted in the late '80s. "Lemmon 714"-stamped tablets popped up occasionally in the '90s but they almost certainly contained no methaqualone.

Me too. It's kinda surprising that we don't have any illicit methaqualone in the states. I knew someone that kept a little tin of 'ludes for over thirty years after the ban & wouldn't let me buy even one at any price. Must be some pretty great stuff.

When i was young i did most drugs and the one i held onto the most was cannabis. I loved getting stoned, had an encounter with God, but i still could not let go of the cannabis. One day God manifested like a skunk spliff, and showed me that you can be filled beyond the temporal fix of substance abuse just by seeking him out. He is the ultimate drug. Praise and prayer, hoping you would try this Jesus drug.
