  • "And if we are to live together and not to die together, we must learn a kind of charity and a kind of tolerance, which is absolutely vital to the continuation of human life on this planet." Bertrand Russell in this capture
In 1959, Bertrand Russell (1872-1970), the Nobel Prize-winning philosopher, mathematician and peace activist was just short of his 87th birthday, when he gave wide-ranging interviews to the BBC and the CBC.
In this capture, Russell giving life lessons - lessons about critical thinking, love and tolerance - to a generation living 1,000 years in the future. Interviewer: John Freeman.
Excerpt from the video "Bertrand Russell - Interview ("Face to Face", 1959)". In full length here: • Bertrand Russell - Int...
Bertrand Russell was a British philosopher, logician, mathematician, historian, and social critic. At various points in his life he considered himself a liberal, a socialist, and a pacifist, but he also admitted that he had never been any of these in any profound sense.
    DEUTSCHE UNTERTITEL / SOUS-TITRES FRANCAIS
    TRANSCRIPT:
INTERVIEWER One last question: Suppose Lord Russell this film were to be looked at by our descendants, like a Dead Sea scroll in a thousand years time, what would you think it's worth telling that generation about the life you've lived and the lessons you've learned from it?
BERTRAND RUSSELL I should like to say two things, one intellectual and one moral: The intellectual thing, I should want to say to them, is this: When you are studying any matter, or considering any philosophy, ask yourself only "what are the facts, and what is the truth that the facts bear out?" Never let yourself be diverted, either by what you wish to believe, or by what you think could have beneficial social effects, if it were believed. But look only and solely at: "What are the facts?" That is the intellectual thing that I should wish to say. The moral thing I should wish to say to them is very simple. I should say: Love is wise, hatred is foolish. In this world, which is getting more and more closely interconnected, we have to learn to tolerate each other. We have to learn to put up with the fact, that some people say things that we don't like. We can only live together in that way. And if we are to live together and not to die together, we must learn a kind of charity and a kind of tolerance, which is absolutely vital to the continuation of human life on this planet.
“Three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, have governed my life: the longing for love, the search for knowledge, and unbearable pity for the suffering of mankind.”
    ― Bertrand Russell

There cannot be love without a strong hate towards the things that threaten what you love. Love without hate isn’t true love it’s just virtue signalling and being tolerant is not being one with love, for tolerance of that which is destructive/dysgenic is pathological altruism and being pathologically altruistic is not doing what’s best in your own self evolutionary interests and going against your self evolutionary interests is going against natural law and going against natural law is being against nature. Being against nature is being against God as God is nature so by being an overly tolerant hippie that blindly shouts “LOVE NOT HATE” you hate God, you are an agent of destruction with inverted values and will bring upon civilizational collapse and mass suffering all in the name of virtue signalling for social brownie points. I will never tolerate evil or anybody who is an agent of destruction or esoterically speaking a slave of Saturn. You are too much of an NPC to understand what that is though.

The problem with that idea is that it can't work. All peoples must abolish war, because if even one people choose not to then they will rule... or the others will be forced to make war to defend themselves.
Any goal which requires everyone to do something will never succeed. A world of peace makes the threat of war an effective weapon in and of itself. As Tolkien wrote, "“It needs but one foe to breed a war, not two, Master Warden,' answered Éowyn. 'And those who have not swords can still die upon them.”"

@@daddylee4216 An extremely valid and poignant point you make, as his statements are contradictory really. The main point is that only when mankind embrace a universal way of living according to genuine truths can we become a peaceful, harmonious global society. Thus, only genuine truth will do, which is always embodied in and out of the Diviner Will, for Love is Truth and Wisdom, for Love is the flip side of Justice. My second point is that to be tolerant, and agree with, or coerce with people's opinions, and thereby become accommodating to falsehood, are two things entirely divorced from one another, for is it not said that when we judge, we are judged, and rightly so. However, it is our right, and responsibility to discern what we meet upon our paths, and choose the right and truthful options, even if it leads to your death, for only the deepest commitment and loyalty to Truth and Justice connect us to real Love, which then leads us spiritually and morally upwards to the eternal fields that we all sense within exist, so why sell yourself short, and follow another man's beliefs? For Truth is both Love and Freedom, which do not come easy, due to the fact that so many people are lost, scared, arrogant, and full of hate; and so attack those who have the courage and audacity to aspire genuine Truth and Freedom. In fact a moral compass I find is that those who aspire to Truth will always be hated and severely harassed by the bound masses, who cannot bear true freedom, nor the inner contentment that comes with the attainment of real knowledge. Finally, might I suggest that true knowledge comes to our spirit through the longing to be virtuous, and being true to your intuition and inner voice, which forms part of our conscience, if it is not dead and buried, and warns us of false and wrong paths. So man just has to listen within for wisdom and truth, rather than use his intellect as the speaker suggested, for the intellect applies only to a pure earthly fact, but not matters of the heart, so I stress one last time, the distinction between the earthly world, and that of the spirit, the latter of which cannot be seen, for it is of a different density, but we can sense it, and the guidance that comes from it, if we remain open and pure to its admonitions and urgings, which are always intuitive, not intellectual.

@@nialloneill5097 He was also making those points 60-70 years ago, well before any of this illogical bs started happening. The broader point to take away is, should we all try to come together on points we agree and vote on other points where we disagree? Obviously the answer is yes. Unless you are on the "far" left, in which case it is mandatory to shout down anyyone who may disagree with you.

    • @nialloneill5097

@@colebyrnes7889 True harmony will only come when all agree to agree, which will come, after the terrible storms caused by all these disharmonious energies and opinions, which are all fear-based. Only that which stems from genuine love is truly sustainable, and liberating, for love is at the same time justice, perfect justice. First men must become pure, hence the purifying storms that are coming with increasing intensity, until there are no impurities left. And then, true love will flood the earth, and bring true happiness and harmony.

May I just say I love how intellectual and respectful this conversation is? I personally have liberal leanings, and would like to contribute some food for thought. First of all, as far as saying the “far left” shout down anyone who disagrees with them I think holds a cornel of truth but would also like to add that the right do this too, and both need to be more open to the others philosophies for the sake of better decisions. As far as the issues of transgenderism, I agree and disagree. I think that people are beginning to take things too far, with trans-racial and trans-abled and things like that, and while I do wholeheartedly agree in the science of there being two biological sexes, I also think we need to face the fact, as Russell would want, that some people are born with extra chromosomes (approximately 1/600) considering that roughly .3% of the US population identifies as transgender, it’s not unreasonable to assume there is a correlation. Another thing to consider is that gender is a social construct in a different way, sex, race, and age are. Gender is not two sides of a (rough) coin, it’s a spectrum and a representation of yourself. That being said I think there is a line at which the science of this matter stops. Ze/Zir and other pronouns/identifications I don’t think are necessarily accurate. What I do think, though, is like Neil de Grasse Tyson, one of the greatest scientists of our time has said, is that regardless, we should still respect others and as Russell said, tolerate them. I understand it’s getting a little out of control and I don’t believe it, but I’m willing to support it, the same I don’t believe some of these opinions on transgenderism to be accurate but support the freedom of speech to voice it and applaud the respectful debate that pursues. On a side note I’d like to ask how everyone here feels about vaccines? If we’re going to be scientific here, I’d like expect everyone to be vaccinated considering the extensive research done. Looking at the facts, we had just shy of 700 mass shootings last year, AR-15’s were present in 26% of them, and guns like that and other Assault Rifles (im aware of the difference between AR15s and other assault weapons) are designed to be able to kill the most amount of people in the shortest amount of time. That’s simply the fact of the matter, so why don’t we recognize that these weapons are not meant for civilian life, that countries who don’t have them don’t have these major mass shootings, and that there is no real gun control in America, at least not sufficient. I have friends who go to completely different schools that both were victims of school shootings, it is a problem and a lot of people don’t want to admit it or do anything about it. I’m not trying to be a raging leftist, but let’s not be hypocrites here, I admit the left has a problem with facing facts and accepting others views but we had a president who denied losing an election with no grounds, who never had approval ratings of above 50% and lost by a landslide in the popular vote, create an insurrection, because YES that is what it was that ended with 6 people dead. And 98% of Trump supports said they’d vote for him again after that, and a lot of people just want to ignore the gravity of January 6th, even though at the time, even republicans were talking about how crazy it was. Governors are running and claiming Joe Biden lost the election and is a pedofile? And say nothing about Matt Gaetz who’s under federal investigation for sex trafficking? Ted Cruz’s porn addiction? Trump who’s been married three times, insulted women, had an affair with a porn star and talked about getting away with looking at women topless and grabbing them? I’ll admit, the Biden campaign has been a disaster, but can you admit to the hypocrisy of the right and the drastic affects of that hypocrisy? I’m sorry I’m not trying to rant, I want to keep this conversation respectful, I’m just a 15 year old who’s looking to find his own political opinions. Heated topics but let’s keep good vibes.

I think the allegations are rarely false, but it's important to not let our emotions come before our assumptions. That's exactly what Russel was talking about in his other point.

Plot twist: 1) there is never just one black and white "truth" , 2) Love and Hatred are the same thing, not opposite things. Hatred just happens to be Love contamined by Anger. Anger is ephemeral, but when it sickens the Love, it turns it into Hatred. The opposite of Love is actualy indiference/apathy, and that is the sickness that rot the society. People cut out Love to avoid reaching Hatred. But they only do that because as they fail to cut out Anger. Sadly he isnt alive anymore to hear my answer but oh well, at least future generations seems to be

Never let yourself be diverted either by what you wish to believe, or by what you think would have beneficent social effects if it were believed. But look only, and solely, at what are the facts. That is the intellectual thing that I should wish to say.

He summed up the most important things of the last 70+ years in a single sentence......then he summed up the more complex issue of tollerance without even knowing what kind of tollerance would be needed in his or our futures! That is a special skill with a special kind of mind!

I doubt he would be so devastated. The human race has been ignoring advice like this for centuries, and we have never learned, and we probably will be for centuries beyond. The only thing that would have been unexpected or bizarre is if we finally listened to reason.
Not to be so cynical mind you, we are continually improving everything as a civilization towards betterment, and things will get better by gradual step by step. We already have so much less hatred than we did at the time he spoke, but it is still a problem, and it probably always will be.

Well speak for yourself. I don't remember humanity ever making you the spokesperson of us. Facts don't matter to you, but it does to me as an individual and if I may be bold enough to speak for humanity, facts matter to them as well. Morality has almost never been considered a weakness so as to say. A good morale is the strength of an individual and a community without a sense of moralism won't be able to stand where it is today.

Theres a thread in this comment section which started as “did he just say facts dont care about your feelings?” And of course the answer was yes, but then a whole bunch of people were arguing about a bunch of different things. And one of the things i saw the most was people disagreeing with “facts dont care about your feelings” I personally dont care if you agree with that statement or not, but disagreeing and saying its wrong is literally proving it right

Like me. I permanently deleted Facebook back in 2011 and I don’t have Instagram, Snapchat or Tik Tok. And in 2009 I was allergic to conversations about Twitter and MySpace was the last straw for me. My girlfriend’s brother and sister on law just moved in their new home and as they were taking pictures they immediately post them online. They were using social media lingo that lost me in translation. I was genuinely happy for them and celebrated them without any social media. It’s a poor excuse to feel that you matter in the world. And with no genuine connection
