Building awesome resetting air rifle practice targets from scraps with basic tools!

  • Today I'm building a new resetting target for my long range sub12 air rifle shooting.
    This style of practice target is perfect for honing our skills and is incredibly simple to build from readily available scraps. Its likely a good option for airsoft too...
    obviously the saw blade is completely dull and i removed any last sharp edges on the teeth. it sure looks mad and it is incredibly stout. it was surprisingly easy to rework and drilled nicely. i was expecting it to be tougher that it was. Table saw blades are easily found if you have any friendly tradesmen you should be able to find dull ones very easily.
    the 30mm bore of this disc will be sub moa at 100 yards, which is the next challenge ive set myself. The reset paddle will be incredibly challenging to hit at the longer ranges. Its only 22.5 mm in diameter so will be a real challenge.
    I built this with some very basic tools, just a drill and a hacksaw as well as maybe a file is about all you really need.
    i will build some more advanced targets over the winter and weld up some cool stuff but this just shows you really don't need anything too fancy to make your own targets.
    This style of target is perfect for hft and field target practice as well as some of the new prs / ARL based air rifle target shooting disciplines. I will be optimising one of my rigs to suit some of the prs based disciplines in some future videos
    this rifle is an Air arms xti50
    the scope is a falcon endura 34mm tubed ffp beast running tier1 mounts

    I’ve made spinning targets in the past. Same as you I bought spinners online and I bolted them to a wooden post. I also bought 5mm to 20mm. X3mm Steel and cut to length and twisted and drilled. I made loads of spinners. Very satisfying making your own targets

    As another option, you could turn the blade 90 degrees and shoot/flip the paddle from side to side. That would give you gravity free resetting and you can still use different sized holes for precision shooting. 😉

    I’m a chippy and have looked at all those different sized bore holes on my scrap blades and wondered how to make targets that will work simply. Amazon for a cheap tap and die set me thinks.well done.

      Ah yeah ,I should have stuck some on the plate.. it's quite a nice dull thud though.. the paddle smacking the back is louder than a hit to the face plate😉

      Morning Arken.. it's turned out great and will be a real challenge at the extreme sub12 ranges.
      If you have a scope in the range that would suit my shooting I'll give it a good thrashing. I'll shortly be building a new rig for some of the PRS based sub12 disciplines so something along the lines of what I use now might work..

    Great work. I am new to this and was looking to get into airgun shooting and saw the video on the led ban , the problem with the pellets skirt needing to expand slightly and led replacements not doing this as well, would a soft rubber skirt press fit into a steel head work ? like i said im new to this and it could just be a silly idea .

    • @tillysgunstocks

  • @TophatOrange
    @TophatOrange 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Lol like the idea, specially when resetting is a harder/ smaller target :) , after many shots i can imagin the thread you made wears out and the spinner wil hit the saw blade from the back and wont "stick" any more?

    • @tillysgunstocks
      @tillysgunstocks  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi mate. The key thing is to have the thread grab just as the paddle hits the back of the face plate/blade... So far it's holding up well but if it was adjusted badly,it would, as you say strip the threads eventually 😉

    • @tillysgunstocks
      @tillysgunstocks  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm running sub12 but I'd imagine these spinners would be ok for a magnum springer maybe 16-18ftlb. Can't imagine they would hold up well to a 40+ ft-lb .25 PCP mind...
      The cutting discs appear to be pretty stout though 😉

  • @cjnev9618
    @cjnev9618 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    awesome idea , any chance of making a quiet version 🤔 as with many back garden shooters neighbours and noise can be an issue , maybe lead facing the saw blade or a wooden back to dull the ringing sound of the blade 🤔.
    also just a quick question , I'm looking for a beginners ( budget ) single shot pcp for ft and maybe benchrest , I was thinking a AA s 400

    • @tillysgunstocks
      @tillysgunstocks  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If you can find an old s400 mpr it would be perfect. They do hold their money as they are still very sought after but worth looking at.
      Funny enough I was just thinking about putting some of them thick felt like pads (that go on furniture feet) on some spinners to see how quiet they are🤔
