the Datsun 120y. . it was the best car I ever had I had it with 38.000 on the clock . never had any troubles with it. it had done 140 .000 miles on the clock when I dearly parted with it only few to rust .I would have a new one if they made them again 😢 .

As a young boy in the late seventies, I remember our neighbour across the road had one of these parked in his driveway, and to my young eyes it looked like sporty as hell. I imagined it would go like stink compared to my Dad's car (Opel Kadett). Illusions well and truly shattered :-)

I read a review once that the exhaust note was similar to an unsatisfying fart. But this still sounds better then modern cars of its kind
You must have read the same review I did! Each new generation of cars only makes the baby Dato sound better.
0-100 is more like a challenge in itself for this
Indeed bruh. My grandma used to drive these and often did a power slide every time coming out of a junction. What a legend car tho. But now it has gone missing. Wth
Yep! Don't forget these class of cars were introduced during and after the Oil Crisis in the 70s and they served a purpose!

They are more refined than it though & still lighter & more economical that Carolla or Escorts. But the Civic was a better, newer design.
@@peterdanharding6041 Shows us how terrible engines were back then. Even budget cars these days would use less fuel (or at most, the same level of fuel) and be twice as quick.

That little 120Y is still going strong. Very healthy engine for one of those cars.

Cool video, mate. It's a surprisingly original car. I love the kerb alarm next to the nearside rear wheel lol. I haven't driven a Datto 120 WHY in ages. I fondly remember the lacklustre performance, speedo needle slop, woeful handling, toxic smelling vinyl upholstery when hot, and the way the clutch used to slap onto the firewall when fully disengaged-the carpet was worn out lol.
Your video made me reminisce of driving my mate's old car, back in 92. Thank you.

I drove mine for 200,000km over 11 years.
Lacklustre performance was improved by opening out the main jet a tad...no faster top speed..just got there quicker.
Mechanic said "Bury boot into the carpet in top and when it stops accelerating...just cruise there.
Spent hours at 5,000 rpm.....never broke the engine.
New Japanese rings and a deglaze of the bores @180,000km...and a replacement clutch because it was 2/3 worn....
The speedo needle slop was from not lubricating the cable drive.
The woeful handling was not bothering to overhaul the front shocks and refilling with Tellus oil; not replacing sway bar bushes; and not keeping up with replacing worn rear shocks.
Vinyl upholstery smell could be overcome by full sheepskin seatcovers...ah, wet wool.
Clutch needed adjustment and better carpet to stop that slap and "boing" sound.....
Driving that car allowed me to save enough for my first house...and I sold the 120Y for 65% of what I had paid for it 11 years before.

Great video! Fantastic example of a late model 120y (1978 I think). I remember this actual car being for sale at a dealership in the Blue Mountains, Blackheath I think, several years back. Glad someone bought it and is enjoying this. great little classic!

I had a 120y with an A15, 32/36 Weber (off my Escort), hot air intake. Extractors, exhaust, ported head and intake, running 11:1 compression and a mild cam.
On the old G-Tech it did 0-100 in 9.12 and the 1/4 mile in 16.4.
Was so much fun though.
Sold it after blowing the 3rd 4sp and about the 5th diff.
Wish I still had it.
Much like the RS2000.

The EL XR8 and the EF XR6.
The WK LS statesman…
All worth 5-20x what I sold them for.
None of them sold for more than $3000.
The pre 90’s ones though… none sold for more than $2000.

Excelentes carros tuve uno 1981 Coupe.
Bought my girlfriend a shit-brown coloured Datto 120y for her first car for $400 in the early 90s.
She had to carry a FM radio on the front seat and a massive screw driver to belt the starter motor once in a while.
So sorry that I gave it away afew years later...would have loved it as a project car these days.

just remember that this thing is actually perfectly fast enough for most purposes. Imagine the huge reduction in consumption of resources if we all actuallly just drove cars that were only big enough and fast enough for what we need

Hi, I love the econometer in this vid too. I'm not an expert on how it works but I always noticed them in cars that had them. It runs off a vacuum/air intake tube, so it's related to air intake increasing when you give it more welly, and hence fuel consumption increases. That's why the needle flails about so fast between gear changes. Cars I remember having them were the first gen Fiat Uno 45/60S and Polo Formel E. Actually most BMWs, come to think of it. A few manufacturers paired the suction to a pressure switch instead making it turn on or off lights on the dash instead of moving a needle - Toyota Corolla GL (1987-1990 models), Peugeot 505 'Econoscope', high spec Renault 18s. Fiat in Brazil, which was still making the Fiat Uno 10 years ago, badged the 'Mille', reintroduced this gauge and called the model the Mille Economy. You can also add your own to your car with a pressure switch and two or three bulb set up (green for good, yellow/alright, red for burn rubber etc) if you want to 'game-ify' your driving for economy.

HI Helen, never get rid of it. I had an orange one with a white vinyl roof, my first car from 1997-1999. It hadn't even done 100K but rusted badly. I couldn't afford to store it. Only one wreckers back then would take it and they gave me nothing for it. Hopefully the engine lives on in someone's else's car. I kept the rear badge from the boot. It's great hearing the engine start and rev in this video.

My Suzuki LJ 50 will take a minute, and is lathargic and strained above 70. Nor can it corner like this Datsun

Wrong. They were a 1071cc engine. They fit into the 1200 class.
An A series Morris motor that was licensed to Nissan commonly found in a Morris Minor and Morris Mini, the latter in a transverse setup. Many other BMC iterations sported this engine. What I loved about Nissan is that they built an alloy head for this motor.

LOL. I owned one of these as my first car but mine had a lot more rust and was even slower. I don't think mine could make 100 kph as it was too flogged out. 4 on the floor, very little go.
