First tip for playing black metal guitar: every dial on your amp set to 10, except for gain and reverb, that you set to 11. Second tip: when your ready to track your guitar, use a walkman in the next room.
In Freezing Moon you are missing that D string note (on the second second fret) on the run down in the intro. It starts with the chord as you play but there are 4 notes after that (the open strings as you play plus that 4th note)..
You can't play it like Euronymous, because Euronymous had no concept. He just played by instinct. So you can't copy guitarists like Euronymous, Kurt Cobain or Onielar, who play 100% intuitive, at least not 1:1 I think, Simon plays it like Blasphemer played the song live at Wacken, anno 2004. Sounds and looks quite right to me.
I think it's subjective. I would have agreed with you a couple years ago, but personally Emperor is not challenging enough for me anymore. To me Immortal and Dissection is more difficult but they can be child's play to someone else.
This is soo amazing - my fav songs it would be so wonderful to be able to play them- just got a guitar - ready to blast off - thank you for your time and for sharing your talent.
Thanks for the video. I definitely needed this. You and Sablast are a blessing for new guitar players who specifically want to learn Black Metal. Also, not sure if you're a fan of Drowning the Light, but I'd love to see a tutorial or two on some of their stuff.
Thank you so much for this, i just ordered my first guitar a les paul full black you made it so clear to understand and the songs you chose are absolutely amazing i cannot thank you enough ❤
This channel inspired me to get a guitar after playing bass for about a decade, love this video. The tone is amazing. Question for anyone reading, I don't have a guitar amp, I'm playing through a bass amp[lol]. I'm on a real tight budget and was wondering if anyone knew if buying a Distortion pedal would be more economical than buying let's say one of those $100 micro amps. Thanks for the lesson. MGLA brought me here
It could go either way really. I'm not really familiar with the sound of a guitar through a bass amp but if it's got a good clean channel and you can boost the treble and knock off some of the low end you can get a good distortion pedal like a Pro Co Rat 2 for about $70 or the Mooer Black Secret, which is a clone of the Rat, for $40 and it sounds pretty damn close. Or you can get an amp like the Orange Crush 12 for $100, which it isn't big but I wouldn't call it a micro amp. Simon showed one of those in a video about the best amp for recording black metal and I though it sounded pretty damn good. Honestly, if it were me, I'd go for the distortion pedal because you can't go wrong with having a good distortion pedal.
@@HateMyself247 thanks for mentioning to get a rat. I just found out the rat like clones sound good through solid state and that other distortion pedal types are for tube amps
Love the short riffs. Picked these up in no time thanks to your help. Would love if you expanded on some of these and put together a song video. Thanks!
Thank you for this video, simon. I am new to guitar still(1 year), and have struggled finding metal i like to learn. I have been using your "seven tears"(this was the absolute first song i started to learn) videos alot, and can do about 5 minutes of the song, and much prefer it on my acoustic. I appreciate the vid geared for beginners. Question; Could you do more videos of acoustic black metal? maybe something similar to this vid? I really appreciate your channel. You have really pushed and encouraged me to push myself; thank you.
Is that the singer from advent sorrow on your picture?? And I wish there was vids like this when I started playing guitar, trying to get a jehovas witness guitar tutor to teach me in league with satan was interesting...
They just play things that aren't power chords sometimes. Something I wish all metal guitarists would do, but they don't. A lot of it is just standard harmony writing that you learn in basic music theory classes (and more of it only bothers with that when it's convenient). Not all of it is that simple, of course, but a lot of it is. It would get you started at least.
Nice one, Simon, but I think THE easiest, Black metal(ish) riff for beginners would be Dunkelheit by burzum. Maybe It's my nostalgia kickin' in, or something, but if memory doesn't fool me - that was one of your first video tutorials, back in like...2015 or 14 ? xD And yeah, if it wasn't for you - I would never blew the dust from that guitar I bought some 10 years ago, and start to actually learn how to play it. Nowadays - I compose on guitar, and only then - transpose what I wrote to other instruments (when before, it used to be keyboards). Keep up the great job, Simon, and thank you! P.S. MORE EMPEROR!!!!1111
In Mayhem's Freezing Moon Intro Riff, I believe there is a 4th note, an Open D String, after the 1st 3 Open Strings. So, Em Chord, E, B, G, & D Upstrokes, then repeat. There's a 4th note (5th if you include the opening Em Power Chord) in there. 😎
I was hoping to hear the Snu Mikrokosmos Tegn riff at the end of the song that Varg recorded unplugged in his garage. That one is sooooo good and teaches beginners alternate picking. Still love the video!
Great to see more beginner level videos, was hard learning stuff like this when I first picked up a guitar... Keep up the good work, how about something like DSBM for beginners?
I have a question/suggestion. Would you make a video on Inquisition riffs? I am a beginner at guitar but would really like to learn how to play like Dagon from Inquisition. Thanks so much for the helpful videos you make.
Freezing moon is correctly in standard tuning in the De Mysteriis dom Sathanas album. During the early live albums with Dead, it was a little more down tuned

I'd like to mention an even easier song to play in Black Metal. Ghoul by Mayhem. Easiest BM song I've ever learned (cover up on my page if you want to see how easy it is). The only issue is that it feels more like an 80's Punk song (think like Misfits) rather than a BM song.
