I've had my new horse for almost 3 weeks and the most memorable moment would be the third day i was just out in the paddock with her and she rest her head over my shoulder and fell asleep on me, it was gorgeous. I am just starting to work her now as she was a bit underweight when i got her and she has put on a little bit so we are ready for work, it is my first time lunging a horse so i've been watching your videos to help me as she is quite lazy and has been a bit difficult to get her to move

Same here. This gave me a lot of confidence because that’s what I thought needed to happen and I’m getting commentary from other people that say I need to rush the groundwork etc. my new girl is 17 I don’t have much background on her that comes in two days yesterday after being here a week she fell asleep on my shoulder and it was the day I really started falling in love with her going to fall of you this is a great help to build my confidence

This video really had perfect timing. Although I do not have my own horse yet...I DO volunteer at a retired racehorse rescue here in Cave Creek Az. called After the Homestretch. Here we currently have 23 horses, so we’re always welcoming a new horse to the property. This can get tricky, because the horses are coming from pampered barns, strict training and a VERY different diet. We rehabilitate them for hunter, trail and dressage and adopt them out. I’ve been there over two years, and these videos and all the information you provide really make a difference in my behavior towards the horses and understanding their language so I can help make their transition calm and comfortable. For me, I need to work on patience with getting too close too fast because I love scratching on them and not all horses want to be touched right away. I also ride with friends with extra horses, so this is so valuable when meeting new horses of different riding styles, bits and saddles...thank you for sharing your passion. I truly appreciate you! When I’m ready for my first horse, I feel like I’ll be a much better owner.

I have been working with my first horse for about a month now. She was rescued by her previous owner, who had to give her up due to some health problems and needing to move out of state. So we don't have a lot of back history on her and my aunt has been teaching me how to ride. The most memorable moment for me was our first walk around the inside of the barn. She had responded well to weight in the stirrups and then in the saddle, but we were unsure of how she was going to respond to cues given from a rider as it had been a long time since she was ridden. She behaved wonderfully. She has gained some confidence since then and has some really stubborn moments that we are still working on, but this was the moment I knew we were going to be ok, that we could work through things together and that I could learn to be more confident and a better rider.

Very good advice Callie, I got my new horse last May. I didn't ride him straight away let him settle in for couple weeks, just did the basic ground work. Then lunged him eased him into the school and alternated with hacking. He is totally different from what the person I bought him from told me. Was out riding on a hack when he started jumping about like a bunny jump at first I laughed it off, then it was a bit bigger then it was like bronking. This has really un-nervered me. I had a trainer for a while, but didn't make him any better, so I now have a calmer to give him when we hack out, all natural from Hackup and he is better, we are getting there slowly, but will take time. Had everything checked teeth, saddle fitter, Physiotharapist all said he was fine, it's a mystery but not nice when he does this. So now he's just a naughty horse and stubborn like Hafflinger's are, think he must be crossed with a Welsh horse as well, they're well known for being a handful. But he's really good in the school. Thanks xx

My first memory of riding my horse when I first got her home (I ws 13 at the time- a few decades older now) was terrific apprehension getting on her alone (my parents bought her for me and just left me to it) and the first time riding out, terrific anxiety when she almost immediately tried to rub me off against a tree! In that minute, I knew, either I had to get control of the situation or it was going to be bad. After a fiew 'bumps' like that one, it turned out to be a great relationship. Becuase she was a good age (7) when I got her, I never had vet issues and she and I bonded as one being. I always try to recapture that feeling when riding now.

My new horse arrived in January - before him , I used to have a mare of 5 years old (appaloosa x SI), who was really really hard to manage and contributed to make me feel scared (too many bad falls from her, but I have to admit that she was for a way more experienced rider) about horses, and so I gave her away. I was heartbroken because I loved so much riding. And then I met Ice (a gelding paint of 4 years), and from the start he was really sweet to me, I don't even have to call him to make him come to me - now he has to be educated, but I know that with him, it will be a fantastic experience (: and he is helping me to gain trust on horses, again. BTW greetings from Italy!

i have a horse right now that wasn't here for over 10 years but was trailered and moved a lot. He bowed in pouring rain in the arena today, which was his first day here, I'm very excited about him and if he's settled i might ride him tomorrow after school, this is my first horse that wasn't a random green horse that wasn't touched for a few years or a old trained horse who wasn't ridden in a few years but always seems to be in season

Thank for your valuable advices, Callie! To my opinion your videos are the best. I am a ‚late rider‘, 46yo and started riding half a year ago. Now I am proud owner of a 8yo Oldenburger. Lucky to have experienced friends, but your advices in numerous videos about riding and horsemanship are a guiding light for a pleasurable experience for both of us, me and my horse. Best wishes from the ‚Münsterland‘ (Germany) Robert

At his age it could also be pain from arthritis. Either in bending the leg being picked up or not able to stand on the other. There are inexpensive anti inflammatories your vet can prescribe to try
      Good luck!

Hi Callie , my horse won't leave his paddock .. the minute that I try and walk him around the riding centre - he plants his hooves and won't move out of his yard
Eating and drinking fine , grazing well
He walked fine off the truck and when I first walked him into the yard
It's only been three days ..

Hi! I need advice....I'm 29 and for a year now I get back to horse ridding ( I was ridding in my teens, jumping etc for about 5 years)- I think I'm quite advanced but I have some problems and my instructor is not helping me much. I'm ridding in a private stable but not on the school horses, there is 6 years old horse (he is owned by someone, but this person is living far away and didn't care to much about this horse) So basicaly only me and my instructor are ridding on him. But he is very unstable and maybe not used to ridder on his back. Sometimes is ok but most of the time he is shaking his head a lot and this is totally distraction for me, I'm trying to do everything right but I feel that he don't understand my requests for most of the time. Most of the time I'm feeling tensed ridding on him. I don't know how to relase this tension, how to not getting distracted when he is shaking head and bumping sometimes.....I really want to ride him cause its giving me experience in ridding, but I'm not sure of my abilites when ridding him, althought when I was ridding more framed horse I didn't have any dificulties. Sorry for my english if I made a mistakes. Can anyone give me some advices how to handle myself and this horse?

First love your weekly videos! I started horse back riding last August once a week and I have the opportunity to adopt/buy a Ditch warm blood 3 year old named Oslo. My coach discourages me as she said that he is too young. I lunged him with no problem and the owner and other boarders said he was very calm. One of the boarders coach saddled him and rode him 5 times and said he was good! Should I take a chance to take him or wait to find a horse that is all trained and older like 12-15 years old?

I need your help. My horse named Jaxi (she is a Quarter Horse) tends to leap in the air when we go into a lope. What I have been trying to do to correct that is make her go into a tight Circle and kick her a little bit and say no then I will make her go into a lope again but she keeps doing the same thing and I have no idea how to correct her. I also lunge her every time before I ride to make sure I get a little bit of her excitement out of her. So I dont know what to do can you help me??

No hate to CRKtraining, this is a great video to educate yourself with if you're planning on getting a horse like months to a year from now. BUT, If you're watching this like a couple days to a week before getting a horse because you don't know what to do, you are NOT prepared to own one.Go back to taking lessons. I don't own a horse yet, but I did tons of research, took lessons, read books, and leased. I know exactly what to do with a new horse because of real experiences, not from a video

Do you have any videos on how to deal with a horse who has started bucking? I’m having the chiro and the vet out but over the last 3 weeks he’s started bucking and kicking out when asked to canter. I’ve lunged him and he doesn’t do it on the line and I’ve also readjust tack and had the saddle fit checked. Just wondering if you have any tips on how to stop this behavior

my arab ive had seince march and shes crazy and unpredictable she acts up saddled, but fine bareback , sold as western/english show horse/trail horse, idk if she has something wrong with her, shes 17 and should know to behave. my five yr old has been started but not backed , needs to get finnished out , have not got on him yet. and m,y ten yr old pony ois half blind missing one eye. he just needs some desensitizing so i can show him (told he was shown before he lost his eye, got him from a rescue that got him from a killpen. think the killbuyer the rescue got him from is how he lost his eye as his coggins he came with at the auction look's like he still had eye before the auction. then the one the rescue did he didnt have the eye. think the person got mad a rescue outbid them , but cant prove it , rescue only cared about getting him better , he had overgrown feet when they rescued him in march and i had to wait till july when he was well to adopt him ..... just need tips on getting him used to other horses and things moving in his blind side.

Sorry, yes beginners do need videos like this when they have no instructor type person living in their area. Also, there can be plenty of instructor types all around, but do they know how to teach someone like me who has many learning difficulties. In my experience the ordinary instructor has no patience for people like me who needs out-of-the-box instruction, and very basic advice and guidelines.

@@anncantrell648 same im autistic ands cant find much help in my area to help me work with my rescue horses, i think ive only been on my rescues five to eight times each , one ive had seince march, the other seince july and my five yr old isnt yet been backed but did all the ground work so far .... i used to ride and show a lot till i lost my saddlebred in nov. 2018 . and aprehensive riding on my own withought help . loosing ceasar messed me up for awile, so ive only been on my 17 yr old arabian six to eight times first time she just wanted to rear and speed reverse and not walk forward ion western tack, when i first got her march 2020. then i waited a month see if she needed to settle more, tried again and she doesnt want to stand still to get on her, my father has to hold her, but second time she did ok but wasnt listening as good as id would have liked her to. third time did fine bareback ( but has shark fin withers cuase of how shes built so uncomfortable trying to sit her without it being uncomfortable ( considering bareback pad first one i ordered was to big so still looking for a good one) fourth time she rode well on lungeline in english tack. and did ok the fifth time in english tack had one small buck but got her listening on the lunge . but then sixth time in english tack she was acting nutty couldnt even get on and she tried to bolt and run my dad over wouldnt stand to get on her. and i also had a friend ride her literly the day before and she did fine bareback . and just not sure what to do keep trying saddled or get a good bareback pad with sturrups , its like any saddle even well fitted hurts her or something and all her nutty moments are when saddled. but shes fine bareback and dont even have to ask and she goes forward willingly bareback but only acts a fool saddled. i last rode her oct 22nd. and gave her a bit of time seince in case she was sore. but not sure what to do with her and idk how to get her to ride the way i want to be able to
