- Recently I bought a Rhino Heavy duty tiller, the Rhino SRM81V tiller because I use the tractor power till a lot on my land management projects between our Southern Illinois farm and our Western Kentucky farm. I did a LOT of research on deciding which Heavy Duty tiller brand that I wanted to purchase that would last a LONG time, and increase my productivity, so that I could Till ground a little faster than I have in the past with my last 6 foot tiller. So, after much research I bought the Rhino SRM81V, their heavy duty model power tiller. According to Rhino's literature you could run these tillers on a tractor with a PTO horsepower if between 40 and 70. I specifically bought this Kioti RX7320 tractor because it has a 63 HP PTO, which was plenty of power to run this Rhino tiller... OR WAS IT??? Join me on the first day of putting this tiller to use on our Kentucky farm. Needless to say, from the minute it hit the dirt I was not really impressed... WHY, you might ask? Well, my tractor was bogging down with the new tiller! Did I not have enough PTO power on my tractor?!! (63 hp pto). That is a nice system on the Rhino tiller to be able to easily change the gears to a different ratio depending on the PTO HP requirements.

Joe, That's a nice setup they have. I have a king kutter 7 footer. I'll be looking at those rhino's next time. Hoping to get my fall plots put in in the next few weeks.
Good luck with the plots! We got some planted in Kentucky! This thing really appears super heavy duty, but a lot more expensive! But I'm hoping this thing can withstand about anything!!

I have an AGERATOR. It is the heaviest duty made. It was the first one to have that gear changing option. I love it and it works great.

40 years ago my Dad had a Howard Rotovator, that had the changable gear ratio box. It was a 50 inch and our International 300 utility had no trouble operating it, even though it was on the lower end of the HP. rating for that tiller. The gear box cover was angled so you didn't have to drain the gear box. Changing the gears was a snap.
I like the angled box idea! I have to open this one up again for a new gasket, cause it leaks now since I've been in there. But I was able to tip it over so I didn't have to drain the box, but what a nice design on the one you had! Thanks

I like that set up on the tiller, I just got done tilling my food plot, I have a ck2510 HST, used a JD550 tiller. Worked great, even thru the grass. Was very surprised that my 25hp tractor ate it up and I could go pretty fast.
Exactly! I've had probably 5 tillers in my life now and never had any problem like this! I was worried that was for sure because this one wasn't cheap!! But they're forward thinking was awesome! Good luck man
I have a CX2510 and I use a 5 foot tiller behind it. I have sandy soil though.

@@kapperoutdoors That was generous of you to say, but inaccurate. My tiller is 65+ years old and has this exact same gearing system. Much more likely that you simply don't "get much" at minimum-wage(s)! Research "Howard Select-a-Tilth" for historical info. Curiosity is the "mother" of knowledge....
Hey Kapper. Nice! You'll probably have to write Rhino about the tiller, especially since their own support didn't even tell about switching out the gearing. Sort of similiar to my engineer father getting involved with Chrysler on a engine problem in the old Horizon/Omni. They couldn't fix it, and he figured it out. Of course they paid him for the work around.

Good video and good fix for the Rhino tiller. I ended up getting the RX 6620 which is the same machine and same engine as yours but set at a slightly lower hp.

@@kapperoutdoors Thanks for your reply. I'm going to add wheel weights. The beet juice would weigh more but I think that 600 pounds will be adequate for what I'm doing. If I need a bit more weight - I'll add a box blade. I'm looking at staying more compact for maneuverability, and not over loading the front end.

I have an old Krone rotor tiller that's about 50 yrs old. no messing with gears. just push a handle on the gearbox to high or low. this Krone is very well built just what I expect from German-made. I have a smaller Kubota hydrostatic that cant lift it but I steer the tractor while the tiller pushes me. Whoever you got your tiller from they should have walked you thru the workings of that unit. I like your tractor. thank you.
I've heard of several older units like yours with changeable gears! Not sure if 'old tech' or 'new tech' wins the battle for toughness, but I have a feeling it is old tech! lol. Thanks

Right on, although I think the gears are a bit too high, because my 63 PTO hp really could not run the top 2 adjustments, but hey, at least they have a great set up to change it!!
Seems like soil condition would be bigger variable than tractor hp. Busting sod is going to more difficult than tilling last years garden. Sticky clay soils are going to be more difficult than loose sandy soils.
Wow that was tough . Oh just like the guick change on my sprint car , except on the sprint car it is vertical not horzontal if it gets tiped over than it is horzontal ...............
It does a nice job chopping it up. I wonder how it does with tree roots in the mix. They make the job much harder to do.
yeah I decided I'm going to try to avoid tree stumps/roots with this tiller! That's why I got the chisel disc, and it does a good job. Thank you

That gear selection process is virtually identical to the rotovators or tillers made by a company called Howard way back to as far as the 60s I think 🤔👍👍
I"ve heard something like that, but that recently their patent ran out. So maybe more of these will be coming out.
You're running reverse tillage. They dig down naturally and take more horsepower to run. On reverse tillage you have to make less passes. If you can run L1 and it never bog down to the point of having to push the cluch in to allow the engine to catch up, then its geared right. All of my pto tillers on both of my tractors have to be pulled in L1. 1983 massey 265 and 2019 kubota m5-111.
I personally think the first setting was better and will yield a better result
good points. I actually lowered it one more gear when I had to fix a gasket leak. I think it is preference if you want to get it done as fast as you can, or if you have more time to run it slow on L as you say. Much of the ground I till has to have 2 passes just because it has a lot of corn stalks or too many weeds (that is my fault as I get behind on the farm). Thanks and keep on tillin!

Weird, I had a Kubota L3430HSTC and a King Kutter 72 inch tiller. I can't recall any bogging issues, and that was in some really poor compacted soil that had a high stone content. Only 27 HP PTO, but it worked great.
yeah the gearing plays a large part. For the other tillers I have used that were not adjustable, I've never had bogging issues. I suspect this one can be changed up for more commercial applications, and bigger tractors. Either that, or different kinds of soil. We are pure red clay here, which it super hard on any kind of dirt cutting machine. Thanks
I run a Woods RTR 48.30 on my mini massey. Totally different tiller indeed but the only time it has ever bogged my tractor is when i had it burried up the the axle I guess you'd call it? Video on my page entitled Garden re till.

Sorry, I misspoke on the name. He was Sir Albert Howard (not "Alfred") For an interesting read look him up. He was the "godfather" of composting and one of the earliest proponents of high organic matter content in soils. I operate my tiller at the lowest tine-speed ratio for three reasons. 1. It completely buries everything at that speed. 2. Lower speed reduces (but does not eliminate...) destruction of the soil structure. and 3. The tractor I leave tiller on is a ("tired") 3-cylinder 40 h.p. Allis Chalmers 5040. No telling what the p.t.o. power is nowadays---surely not over 25 h.p. so I operate in the "creeper" gear. It does an excellent job! It has the "forward-rotation" tines and, being heavily-built, has no tendency to "climb out of" our sandy soils. Also useful to push you out of "trouble" should the 2-WD tractor have difficulty. A neighbor has a "reverse rotation" tiller (his tractor is 4-WD) but I didn't like the results as well as mine, which stands to reason: his is always trying to pull material to the surface while mine is trying to bury it. I would not consider reverse-rotation w/o 4WD!

My Horward Rotovator is built similar but allot heavier Horwards are built for easy gear change no need for draining the gear box This is very old, my Horward was built in the 70"s

They can handle it at least a heavy duty one. However, you're gonna love the new implement picking up this week. It's a custom made front row of cutting disks and rear of Spring loaded chisel plows. That should work perfect

Kapper Outdoors Really like them and the head. strap lights are so lite and blinding ! Kapper, I have several tool kits like that. I usually think it’s going to be a fast job. I grab the ratchet and then pry and pry on the couple of sockets that look close and it turns into a mess fast. They need to make a wedge shaped holder for sockets with a magnetic base so the sockets would hold in and the nut once off and have deep printed sizes on the sockets. Sure make clean up after a job faster. Unless I am the only person that has trouble pulling those tight fitting sockets out and have to kinda guess and take a couple.
This is just a thought you would think the manufacturer would've told you about everything to know about that rototiller as the gear ratios to work with your tractor. Just a thought

Not really, but it does really help you make adjustments on the fly that do affect how the tiller digs and cuts. Thanks.

My question- I am thinking about plowing first( tough root bound pasture) Tough rocky ground.
Do you think a older 60 h.p( pto) would be bogged down afterwards significantly?. This is not loamy soil at all. Any help is great. I just don't see these around here
Do you mean plowing with a chisel plow or disc harrow, or do you mean using a tiller like this? In such rough ground, I would say to get a chisel plow and/or a disc harrow. That kind of rough ground is really hard on a power tiller. Good luck, thank you.

having a tiller issue
king cutter 72 inch...3 years old shaft drive.
connected to John Deere 5075e plenty of power.
yesterday noticed some noise from behind the tractor.
saw some smoke from there the gear box is or the slip clutch location.
checked everything and started tilling again
noticed tiller tines will turn when I engage the tractor pto but when I drop tiller down tiines on tiller stop rotating under any resistance.
what could the issue be????
Definitely a slip clutch issue. You might just need to tighten the bolts on the clutch from the sounds of it. If you were tilling in pretty normal ground, and not like hardened clay or something, your bolts just need to be snugged a bit. But if you were in hardened ground, like very hard, then the clutch is doing it's job. Tighten them each down like one to two turns equally, then try again. good luck!

Did running the PTO Cruise control help any?
NOPE... Same thing. When the tiller would dig down just a little it would just bog the engine down.. IMO just TOO high of a gear ratio. So glad they gave the gear options, otherwise the thing would be useless!!
Why the heck they store the other gears in there? They just sitting in there making more friction??
I think it's genius! Don't think it is causing much friction by the way they have them in there.

I really don't think tillers are made to til sod. That's what a plow is for, breaking up sod. My dad actually tilled the driveway with his tiller and destroyed it. The dumb things people do when they get old...
Well I have never read anything in any of the manuals about not tilling sod? Been doing it for many years, no real issues if you take your time. I could see a light duty tiller might not last too long on sod, but I always use HD equipment whenever I can get it. Thanks.

I don't recall but being so heavy duty I think it was around 7k or so. But that was pre co vi d I think..

As far as I know, Yes, they are one of the few very HD manufacturers.
This Rinno tiller is the best tiller i have ever seen. A great unit that has duel side drives and a REAL gearbox. Doesen't look like any "SCRAPONEZ" parts on this "get what you pay for deluxe pure quallity unit". Thanks for this great vidio.

This gearing system was invented by Sir Alfred Howard. I have an ancient Howard "Select-A-Tilth" (P-50) tiller that utilizes this exact same system. I'd try the lowest ratio first and move "up" from there as power and soils permit. BTW, if your tiller were level the "spare" gear-set would stay on their busses. Gear lube doesn't need to be drained before gear change on the Howard tillers.

Howard had wing nuts on cover no need for spanners when switching gears.
I was expecting to see more gear oil.
Well I had it tipped all the way forward so the oil was pooled up at the 'front' of the gear box.

I guess I don't understand why you are trying to go so fast. I did a lot of tilling with my father when I was young. The speed of the tractor should be as slow as it will go. The engine should be run as fast as possible, permissible. I've watched so many of these things on TH-cam and everyone is going too fast.
Well I don't disagree with you. I just think that productivity is why people want to get it done as fast as possible, as there is usually not enough time and energy to go around these days. That's my take anyways. If I can get it done and save an hour here and there, that is the productivity that I strive for. Thanks.
