Oild paint was originally made with pastel pigment. Pastel is the best form for painting . I use it and create the most realistic paintings with Pastel.

Brilliant work, I’m gobsmacked and thank you for the information I have gone to many art classes where the teacher literally teaches you nothing. This is one of the best tutorials I’ve seen and most highly accomplished work 👏👏👏🙏
Thanks! Your demonstration & explanation of tone & temp to represent form at selected stages of the piece resulted in what I consider a unique lesson to help embed those important concepts
Hi the set is conte a Paris sketch set the colors are black sanguine sepia and Pierre noire which is a cool gray and white which is the most important, thanks for subscribing and the kind comments.
Joe, nice coloring job for sure. I see you laid in the features of the face with ahh, lightbox, or projector. That's how i do it as well. Saves a lot of time on commission work. Best regards.
Hi thanks for question. I drew the drawing by hand on a separate sheet of paper then transferred it by carbon paper , I used to luci for jobs I got but my eyesight’s not what it used to be . When I draw I erase a lot and this sanded board does not erase well.thanks again for watching
Hi, This was a really great tutorial. I don't know how you explain such complex theory so easily -you've a real gift for teaching. It's a stunning picture. And I've learned a lot. Because your approach is so detailed, and you make your choices really carefully, I'm just about brave enough to ask, were you happy with her left eye? -I have a mercilessly perfectionistic brain. It's an artistic nightmare. And It might just be a case of personal preference. But do you think one could get away with a tiny bit more light in the left eye - even though it's the far side of the face? Or does her eyebrow look a little high? Or is the dark line at the furthest edge of the eye just a smidge too dark? Or have you any other thoughts. I really hope you're not insulted by my questions. I've imagined that a person who enjoys detail as much as you do wouldn't mind. If you do mind, I'll take my comment down.
Thank you for your comment I really appreciate it . I don’t mind the questions at all . On the left eye I chose to keep the high light lower so that the left side would recede I didn’t want to give that side of the face to much importance. On the eye brow it may be a little high if you take in the perspective of the face. Again thanks for watching
This is a wonderful tutorial and I am so glad I found it. I would love to begin to work on people portraits in my pastel works soon. The information you shared is so informative. Thank you.
Joseph, I love this great work! How do you save your work you mentioned that it cant get wet, do you put it under glass? Do you use other types of paper that you can "fix" your pastels with and how long did this take? Thank you for posting new subscriber.
Thank you for the kind comment. I don’t fix the painting because it darkens the values. You can fix your painting if you use the paper called Clairefontain pastel mat a smooth board. If you’re going to hang the painting it must be behind glass . It took about 30 hours. Again thanks for watching
Hi thanks for watching , I’ll be glad to explain . First you lay down the darkest value then the mid tone values then the light and highlight. Then you cover the whole shape with white pastel. Next you blend the whole shape with a stomp or paint brush or finger , this will make it so the values you laid down will show thru giving you a translucent appearance. I hope this helped thanks again
Wow wow wow, I learned so much in this short video. What was that about the hair drawing, scalp, and the ant closer to or far away. Loved this. Have to watch this one a few times.
Hi Joseph, I've watched this several times now. I've learned so much. I know someone has asked you this before but I can't seem to bring up your reply (somehow I've deleted it? I don't know) but could you list the pencils you used again please. Apologies.
Hi don’t worry it’s always good to hear from a viewer. The pencils are Conte a Paris sketch pencils they come in a set of six pastel pencils ,I got these at Jerry’s Artarama or Dick Blicks . Thanks again for watching

Thank you very much for liking and subscribing I really appreciate it. I used the conte sketch set I believe it has five colors. Black white sanguine sepia and I added a yellow ocher. The portrait took about 15 hours there about. I hope that helps you. Thank again
Great art, thanks. It sounds like you're using a set of Conte pencils, containing white, Pierr Noir, And different Sanguines, which are waxy. Conte pastel pencils are not waxy, rather they are more chalky than other brands.

I don’t like to fix any of my pieces because, darkens the values so much no matter what surface I’m using . The best solution I’ve found is to put it under glass . You want to try the fixative on a scrap piece of the Sennelier board and see what happens. I’ve only had a bad experience with this board once and it was a tan color .i made the mistake of using the same board on a piece I’m working on now.
Thank you for this pleasant tutorial how to use this medium. I started to pick up my artwork again not so long ago and you're a wonderful artist and a very good teacher as well ❤ Thank you very much and good luck with your channel 👍🌷
Hi Caroline ,I use both this sanded board is difficult to draw and erase on . I’ve had problems of losing grit can’t be replaced so I draw on a separate piece of paper then I transfer it using carbon paper. From there I produce the finish piece . I’ll put in how I do this in the next video.

Even though it is pastel, it has the feeling of an oil painting. Absolutely sublime ❤❤❤
I used to paint in oils but became allergic to turpentine and had to work in pastel . But there both a lot of fun. Thanks for the kind comment.
