In loving memory of Mrs. Labreeska Hemphill(1940-2015). Mrs. Hemphill was born February 4,1940 in Flat Creek,Alabama,the daughter of Walter Erskine and Gussie Mae(nee’ Goodman) Rogers. She was raised in Alabama primarily by her mother as her father left her family when she was a young girl. She began her career in Gospel music as a teenager singing with her mother’s family,The Happy Goodman Family. Her mother was the younger sister of Howard,Rusty, and Sam Goodman. Her uncle,Dr. Howard Goodman,became a father figure to young Labreeska and her siblings and would be a great influence for Christ in her life. She remained very close to Dr. Howard and his wife,her aunt Vestal. She met her future husband,Dr. Joel Hemphill,in 1955,during a revival meeting that her family was holding at his father’s church in West Monroe,Louisiana. They began dating and eventually fell in love. They were married in 1957 and were blessed with three children; two sons,Joel Jr. and Trent,and one daughter Candy. Dr. and Mrs. Hemphill began traveling and singing with their children and for several years were traveling evangelist. In 1971, they returned to Louisiana and started a Pentecostal church in the town of Bastrop. They would pastor this church for 22 years before retiring from pastoral service. They then began recording music once again full time in 1993. They relocated to the Nashville, Tennessee area,settling in the suburb of Joelton, Tennessee where they worked and lived until her passing in 2015 at the age of 75. While in Nashville,Joel along with their two sons began The Hemphill Brothers Coach Bus Company,buying, selling and building custom buses for traveling artists and musicians,bus companies and transportation operators. Famous customers of their’s included The Happy Goodmans,Dolly Parton,The Inspirations, The Kingsmen Quartet,Barbara Mandrel,Pam Tillis, and many others. It has become one of the most successful bus companies in the South. Their daughter,Candy,married Dr. Kent Christmas,a pastor from the Nashville area, and became a pastor’s wife and the founder of The Bridge Ministries, a nonprofit organization that helps provide services,food, shelter and basic needs for the homeless in the Nashville area. After nearly 50 years of service in churches and Gospel music,Mrs. Hemphill went Home to be with the Lord at the age of 75 on December 9th,2015. She is buried in the Hasley Cemetery in West Monroe,Louisiana. There were two funeral services held for Mrs, Hemphill,one at Christ Church in Nashville, Tennessee and the other at The Living Way Apostlistic Church in West Monroe,Louisiana.

All three of them have died. I knew Roger McDuff fairly well. On more than one occasion I helped carry equipment, etc.
