I'm going to have to get into this soon as the threads for the top bearing and backing nut at the top of the column are partially stripped on my 35x so this is very helpful.
I saw an interesting video where a guy got the balls into the fully assembled nut by holding the shaft upside down with the top of the nut held about one turn above the end of the shaft. He then just dropped the balls into the top of the nut and with a little jiggling the balls ran down into place. He then just threaded the nut down a turn and the balls couldn't escape.

Sounds good, there is usually many ways to get to a good end result.

@@BundyBearsShed Many thanks for the reply! The replacement shaft arrived today with a few of the balls rolling around in the packaging so I got a chance to try feeding them in which worked OK. Thanks for the zip strap tip - hopefully that should save me repeating the exercise again. Interesting that you had an issue feeding a new nut onto the top of the shaft. I have bumped into some "good enough for government work" metrication in some spares I have bought here in the UK - like chrome nuts that are actually M16 x 1.5 rather than 5/8 x 18tpi - nasty!
Thankfully the shaft I have is still good old imperial so happy with that.

I have a Massey Ferguson 165 and I'm trying to rebuild the steering box. I cant find a single video showing how to do it. Mine doesnt have the same set up at this 135. I dont have the ball bearings that go around the shaft like this one either. Any where someone could point me to see how to do it?

Similar to the one I did on the MF65 if that helps.

Do you have a hide face or plastic hammer? I shudder sometimes when you pull out your knockometer. lol

Is this steering box setup the same for an old MF65 non power steering model? On my 65 when you turn the steering wheel left, the steering shaft rises up until it locks and then it will turn the front wheels. The same turning right, the shaft goes down until it hits the bottom and the the front wheels turn right. It does take an effort to turn the tractor though.

With 1 shim out and it being a fraction to tight could you have ground a tiny amount of the end of the bolt to give the little bit more play that you required?
