  • This locomotive UP 1067 was left idling on a siding in St. Paul Minnesota for 5 days. I have seen trains sit around for a day or so waiting on a crew change but never a lone locomotive left to sit and idle for such a long period of time.

    I used to fuel locomotives in a couple of large rail yards. It wasn't unusual for some of them to not move for weeks or even months at times. They would automatically start and shut off to keep the engine from freezing and possibly for other reasons, but none of them were abandoned, and neither is this one!

    I'd be so tempted to take it for a quick back-and-forth run... Hence why they remove the reverser and train brake handles. 😂

    I've seen locomotives idling for far longer than just a few days. I was told that it's easier than to try restarting after sitting for a while. I figured who am I to dispute the reasoning?

    They don't put anti-freeze in the radiators, and I seriously doubt they put winterized diesel in the tanks. They probably don't need it this moment. It's an old unit, but they certainly don't want it to gel up or the water to freeze in the block

  • @delamaize
    @delamaize 9 ปีที่แล้ว +41

    They probably only have a switching job once a week or so, and it probably takes less time and fuel to leave the locomotive there, and bus/drive the crew in, than taking it back to a major yard/facility. Also, it takes a quite a bit of time, and effort to restart a locomotive, not to mention the fuel. Also, I noticed the snow on the ground. Unlike your car, locomotives do not have anti-freeze in their coolant systems, only water that has been dyed green to make leaks easier to identify. So it will be left running to prevent freezing. That, and keeping the air pressure up is probably why it keeps throttling up and down.
    I doubt it's "abandoned." It's probably just tied down there. Crews are required to take the reverser handle, and disable to the power to the traction motors when leaving a locomotive unattended. And, even if the doors are unlocked, without a reverser handle, or the knowledge on how to restore power to the traction motors, it aint going anywhere. Don't get caught walking around on UP property, they like to go after trespassers pretty aggressively, and it's a pretty steep fine.

    • @chrism9277
      @chrism9277  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      delamaize They really don't tun antifreeze in these things ? That must waste such a colossal amount of fuel having every locomotive idle all winter long.

    • @delamaize
      @delamaize 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      ***** Yep, they don't run anti-freeze in them, Or at least BNSF doesn't. I'm a firefighter, and we had a BNSF representative come down and give us a class on Hazmat with locomotives and trains. He told us if we got called out to a locomotive leaking fluid somewhere, and it appeared to be leaking green fluid, it was only water with green dye from the coolant system. He didn't say why they don't use anti-freeze.
      As for wasted fuel, unless the locomotive is having some kind of maintenance, they leave them run. Two main reasons, one is it takes such a long time for them to warm up to operating temp, and it takes a significant amount diesel to start these beasts.

    As a UP employee, I can tell you locomotives freeze up in the winter really easy. They have Guru valves that will drain the water if the water temperature drops below 40, the amount of steel in a loco will maintain a given temperature for an extended amount of time. Secondly for this reason the units are equipped with Smart Start. which is designed to start up and shut down unit to maintain water temps above 40 in the winter. After a loco drops its water it takes two days at 60 degrees to safely bring the temperature back up to be able to refill the water.

    I stayed at Izaak Walton Inn at Essex, Montana during September about 5 years ago. Izaak Walton Inn sits in the middle of Marias Pass on the BNSF Railway, the lowest crossing of the Rockies yet trains still require helpers over the pass. There is a small yard about 200 yards from the hotel. During the 5 days I was there a couple of Dash-944CW's sat and idled the entire time. On the morning I left I walked over and asked the mechanics how much fuel a GE burned per hour in idle. They said about 2 gallons depending on how cold it was. That's 240 gallons each which wouldn't make much of a difference in the 5K gallon fuel tanks on those locomotives. Anyone know how much a railroad pays for diesel?

    It's there probably to work that yard or work a local train. They simply don't have traffic in that area rn so they leave it. It's a relatively old, and by the looks of it only decently maintained locomotive. It's not hardly any use on the mainlines of today, so they leave it there because why not. That yard probably has to have an engine on the ready to work customers as they ask for cars. The engine is NOT running idling all day every day. It automatically turns on and off as it needs to to maintain proper interior temperature of its fluids. Seeing as it's cold out there, it probably does spend a fair amount of time running. Also, trespassing railroad property is super not cool. A good way to get yourself arrested or killed.

    Seems like this locomotive is running to stay warm. Ironically I saw a GP60 sitting in Mesa near the junction of the UP Phoenix Sub and Chandler Industral Lead. The locomotive had no crew, and was sitting there running. If you've lived in Arizona then you know the Phoenix area rarely gets below 35 F in the winter and almost always gets above 100 in the summer, so I was wondering why this locomotive was running without any work to do. It was over 100 degrees that day, so part of me thought they were trying to keep the air conditioning on so it isnt hot as hell when the crew works in the locomotive after sitting out for days, if the GP60s even have an A/C.

    Ahhhhh listen to that 710 idling.... Anyway what the hell is a foamer? Railbuffs probably know more than the people working on the railroad. They just look at it as a job while railfans I hope at least in America look at it as American history and paying Homage to America's inventors and men who made it easier for the workers today. These operators today have it easy compared to feeding a steamer coal in sub-zero temps with no radios, phones, shitters nothing! But thanks to smart guys working for EMD all they have to to today is bitch about us railfans

    I believe it was because the deisel hadn't been started for a long time. These engines need to run to stay working. They were working out the kinks.

    Cold outside. Keep it warm

    The only reason why it's Still running is because they do that when it's cold and the Groo will also be back sometime soon

    If you ever find a running locomotive with no one in it, maybe the engineers live near by, and it uses more fuel shutting it off and restarting it then just leaving it running

    cheaper to run it then on and off. believe me if it moved they'd know. the brake and idle key are taken out. sucker isn't moving a inch.

    We do the same thing with our engines on Middletown & Hummelstown. It's simply to keep the cylinders warm and not freeze up, especially in the winter.

    Looks like it might be a tad cold. Diesel fuel gels at 32 degrees and freezes at 15 degrees. They just leave them running. keeps the recirculating fuel heaters running. Ever tried thawing out every fuel line on an engine this big???

  • @bobpaulino4714
    @bobpaulino4714 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Far from abandoned. Many have auto start to keep them from freezing. If it gets too cold many are set up to dump their coolant.

    I have seen them idling an awful lot, supposedly there has to be a problem with a start up from a cold start. Railroaders have told me they idle to save money on diesel fuel. I always believed they were wasting money by letting the engines idle too long.

    EMD locos tend to piss oil out the stack if they idle too long.. a quick 20 minute load once a week keeps them running decent though..

    How many gallons of fuel do these things use up?

    • @krakenwoodfloorservicemcma5975
      @krakenwoodfloorservicemcma5975 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      4500 gallon tank will last 3-4 weeks at idle.. autostart obviously will save a lot.. many older units have automatic shutdown/restart niw.
