Hot Weather Wilderness Survival Kit In Your Pants Pockets

  • Theres a big difference between winter survival kits and summer survival kits. Also a big difference in how large a kit is and if youre willing to carry that kit. How about a full kit that you dont have to carry in a pack but all in your pants pockets? Lets explore that possibility.

    I can attest to the utility of the mesh hammock. It literally saved my life in 1992. We were at St. Joseph’s peninsula in Florida with a Boy Scout Troop where they were earning their snorkeling badge. August, hot, humid and no potable water. We had carry every drop to where we camped after hiking two miles down the peninsula. We camped on the bay side but hiked over to the Gulf side one day, about a mile through coastal pines and palmettos. I got over heated on the way back. I strung up that mesh hammock in the shade where there was a breeze off of the bay. Having the air able to cool me all over plus having an MRE grape beverage powder with sugar brought me back. Living in coastal Alabama a kit like this is as or more important than a cold weather one. It’s been 100+ here for 13 straight days. Thanks for confirming things I already carry and adding ideas for new ones.

      Fantastic to hear you used that Steve! Purist hammock hangers hate them things but they are true piece of hot weather survival gear. If you hadn't had that net hammock and grape powder the outcome would have been vastly different. Thanks for sharing that and thanks for watching Steve

      @@MasterOfTheWeirdingWay I suffered a severe heat exhaustion in July 1978 working in an underground pit at a railcar unloading site. The pit was metal lined and exposed to the sun. I was behind the metal walls essentially in an oven. Wood chips were unloaded there’s and the only way to do the cleanup I was doing was with the system running so I could throw material on the running conveyor. With the system running there was steam coming off the chips. Super hot and humid conditions. They had removed the old salt tablet dispensers and electrolyte replacement wasn’t a thing yet. When I went to the medical center (this was a large paper mill) they told me to take a couple of extra breaks and drink more water. When you’re 20 in 1978 and want to keep your job you do as you’re told. My private physician told me I came a whisker from full heat stroke. Took me over 30 years for my hypothalamus to reset and not cause me to be so heat sensitive. On the snorkeling trip due to our location my only option for recovery was back at camp where the hammock was. I didn’t ignore the signs, I knew them all too well 14 years later.

    Hi Dave! When you started pulling gear from those britches, it reminded me of my late wife's handbag. I think if I had asked her for a chain saw she would have produced one from that bag! As always, great content. Blessings to you and Nick.

      3:47 i saw a guy who had a black walnut tree in his garden. He picked up a bunch of the whole fruits piled them in tin bucket kinda thing (but bigger) and started a fire under the container to heat up the water real good. After a while the water became black'ish. Then he puts his grey'ish looking camo stuff into the water and let the stuff in the water for many hours…until it cooled down like cold. Then he washed everything real good…and boy o boy…after that everything (also the nylon parts) turned out in a very nice earthy brown looking camo whitch worked fantastic in the woods.
      Sadly I don’t know his TH-cam Channel anymore :(
      …just a short tip for this grey'ish looking camo stuff🫡

    Another awesome vid, Dave! One thing I might add: Do not, I repeat, do NOT wear any type of cargo pants to a music concert or the table next to their metal detectors / frisk area will look exactly like your table did when you were pulling all of your survival stuff out of your pockets, with many groans from the people behind you! Pockets always end up getting filled no matter how hard you try not to fill them! Ask me how I know this...

    Great video with lots of well thought out planning. I particularly like this topic, since I'm in south Florida and heat and bugs are the majority of the year here. The only thing I disagreed with here is the importance of fire for any survival situation. It might not be needed for warmth, but it is the best way to signal a position at night or during the day if you make it smoky. A smoky fire also runs off the bugs and keeps bigger critters away from your immediate area. I have a life straw with the bag in my pack, but I still carry a stainless water bottle to boil water. Fire is a great source of comfort, almost like a companion if you are alone, and it gives you something to focus on to keep your mind from going the wrong way in a bad situation. Then again, I may just be a pyromaniac.

    • @Reallybigmonkey1
      @Reallybigmonkey1  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I did include a fire kit. It is important but to me should be avoided in extreme heat situations unless absolutely necessary. Thanks for the input and thanks for watching

      Here in Puerto Rico we find real camouflage new military pants in the flea markets. People buy them to use them here in our so called “jungle” with a real machete to clear the jungle land to grow bananas and fruit trees. It’s tropical hot here and we wear them to work outside in our jungle farm land. They’re lightweight and cool to wear. Of course we spray ourselves down with especially the boots to prevent stepping on fire ants mole hills! We carry bottle spray in the cargo pants plus water thermos full of ice cube packed water; and gloves and cold wet water bandana around our neck to cool us down.

    I always enjoy your videos Dave, plenty of ideas! My personal survival kit is predicated on a system I was taught during my escape and evasion training and is meant to take advantage of the time I have to put the kit together. The term used is a "run suit", and its designed exactly for that, it's in case you are fired upon and have to leave your kit and run. The pockets are filled with minimal or small items that will not be bulky in any way and the idea is that you never use the items during normal everyday activities, they are only there should you need to run. I have also sewn a huge pocket to the inside of my jacket with the entrance at the top. It is important to sew a cord of some sort across the opening as you can "hang" your tarp in there without it sliding down and bunching up. Keep the ideas coming, great show.

    Oh, Lord, as He knows - the old fatigue pants made me happy when they came out with the lighter rip stop!!! Tried some of these in W. Tex. Love the things you are saying! Years back in VA spent some nights near the James river. Those skeeters bit through the sleeping bag - didn't worry about suffocating. Never slept however many days it was! had no nets back then! Nets, yes!!! Great bug hat! You have a store there! I hope folks take you seriously about this kit - like the sack, and such. Been stung by scorpions twice. I the south securing yourself if not the ground is essential! 'Course, then I immediately have to pee... Southwest deserts - mountains CAN be a little different - Trauma - 'cause Im down if I'm in trouble, shelter 'cause first shock and sun, then signals. Even before water. might not find or be abler to hunt water. I NEED to be found in two days. Three is miracle territory. [Smiley face goes here]. Carry on. Good stuff.

    Just a little tip for my fellow outdoorsmen: regarding the Sawyer squeeze, another option (instead of force filters) is to prefilter your water through a Milbank bag before running it through the Sawyer, it will greatly enhance the life of the Sawyer. Besides, the Milbank bag can be repurposed for many other things and weighs practically nothing. For example, it can be used to gather tinder or wild edibles with it walking distance if your camp.

    • @Reallybigmonkey1
      @Reallybigmonkey1  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Good point. For those that don't have a milbank bag then at least prefilter really dirty water through any kind of cloth to get the sediments out

    You're correct on the first thing you need is a workin brain. THINK about what you're doing, what you need, and go from there. Again correct, better to have it and not need than need and not have it. Sound sage advice.

    I have to have lots of pockets and military surplus BDU is all I wear, spring thru summer plus a boonie hat. I really liked that kitchen, gonna shops around for one of those. I have a pair of those OCP pants and did not know bout those knee pockets! Just put together a pocket kit using a light weight waterproof roll down snug pak bag, fits just right in my BDU pocket holding my essential gear, I also use my other pockets. I have a fire kit in a tin just like yours, first aid kit with a quick clot dressing in it, I also have duct tape lighter with chapstick, I use my saw from my SAN or muti tool, also chain from a chainsaw with handles, it packs up real small, I do like to carry a machete but a short one, recently purchased the Old Hickory 9” machete, really like it, nice and light weight for hiking. Then I carry a belt knife with bout 4-5 inch blade, I believe that headlamp lite is a must, I use a small one, I have one of those towels, their great. Also a light weight poncho. I have a head net to, really enjoyed this video Dave, keep ‘‘em coming brother

    One thing I would like in survival pants is to make them convertible. For hot weather I would convert them from long pants to shorts. But I wouldn’t stop there. I would sew in drawstrings top and bottom. Now I’ve converted the bottom sections of the legs into two large carry bags on the fly. Add an attachment point in the bottom and top so that I could attach an old luggage strap to them. Now if I come across a resource in the wild I’ve got a great way of carrying it around. In hot weather survival we’ve got to keep in mind that NOAA puts out when they post a hot weather warning. You should wear clothing that’s light weight, lose fitting, and light colored. Anytime during the summer in the Deep South you should have the mindset that the heat index is going to be from 110 or better.

    As you said, people can add or take away from it. For me, being in the big and tall section, it’s hard finding cargo pants, lol. Also, I don’t know if I’d want to carry that much stuff in my pockets, I’d feel and look like Bozo the clown, so I just use a Maxpedition sling bag.

    This is going to be good. Sorry I’m late brother. As always your videos have something new a person can learn or think about when preparing. Your full of wisdom brother!
    At the end of the video, you made a statement about not having much of a fire in summer time. This is what I thought of that will probably make you laugh. For instance, in different forests , they don’t let you make a fire during certain times of the year. I was just thinking if you were in California & you were lost and you wanted to be found in the mountains. You just simply need to get a good campfire going and you’ll have your self found in no time flat. Once you are rescued and back at home, you’ll probably get a big fat bill in the form of a fine in the mailbox within a week from California for violating the no campfire ban. Lol.

    Dave your a wealth of information but I really love the gear you come up with.
    Gotta say being from Maryland when I moved to Florida. When I went into the wild I always carried a bag. Depending on what we were doing would dictate what day we took. I have a shoulder medic type bag. But most likely a camelback day pack.
    Many don’t know water isn’t enough in hot humid climate. Nowadays they make Pedialyte tablets to add to water. Another great thing is beef jerky. I’m 54 I go back to the salt tablet days.
    Bugs do make life miserable. Let me also tell you about the water filter I’ve found. It’s called memory solution. It’s a 6liter bag hose an filter. What makes it useful is it’s able to be rebuilt. It also has charcoal filters. It saves you from having to buy a whole new setup. It’s on Amazon. I love it.
    Another great video

    Love Friday’s when I hear - “hey everybody”
    Yes, your kit (as shown) is overkill, but having options is great. It seems like we have two seasons, hot/dry (burn bans) and rain with occasional snow. All kidding aside, know before you go, plan for the worst hope for the best. Always let someone know where you’re going and when you’re coming back. I think you could save weight by leaving the Silky saw and multitool, and bringing a SAK with a saw, probably not going to need it but you know the saying.
    I was thinking about you last night and thought it was time to make the steamed cheeseburger. (yum, yum 😂)

    As a former firefighter/EMT and Search and Rescue member, I've always suggested a person carry an emergency space blanket even in summer, as when placed shiny side OUT, and positioned between an injured, sick, or "surival-situation" person and the hot sun, it can provide life-saving SHADE, when natural shade is insufficient or not available. (helped save my husband's life that way, when he suffered VERY serious injuries/trauma on hot pavement in full sun) I was glad to see you include a packet of electrolyte/hydration mix as well. Carrying TWO packets, or similar products like the electrolyte drink tabs that can also be added to a water bottle/canteen could be a huge benefit, especially for those prone to cramping. :D Nice video! :D As you indicated, survival gear can't help you if you don't have it with you, so alternate methods of carrying them is timely and helpful! :D

The kit you selected covered most things vital for the given situation, a couple of useful items I would add would be a small mirror, and good tweezers, and a few wet wipes to clean up whith, also if you need daily med's, take at least 3days supply whith you. Great thinking Dave as usual! I have a couple suggestions as usual...A wet bandana goes a long way when wet, cooling you off. Also a Thermocell would fit in a pocket and would keep you from getting eaten alive but the main thing I wanted to suggest is a Shannon's Bug Tamer Jacket and gloves. They work way better than single net jackets and... You can dip it in the creek and put it back on for a swamp cooler sensation. I've been wearing Shannon's for many years bowhunting in Florida it is my Go to along with Permethrin treated clothes. I prefer a fabric hammock, barely bigger than your net, that can also be treated with Permethrin or they'll bite your back and butt and you'll look like you got bird shotted! Love your show man .

    Hello Dave. This was a wonderful video. Even way up here in Nova Scotia, it has been a very hot, muggy and buggy summer. I love it when I learn something from a video, and I always learn something from one of yours. All the best to you and Nick. Take care, Ben

    As always, your show is very educational, logical and functional. We will try out your kit & give it a field test when it's summertime in Australia. Mum & Dad encouraged us to go outdoors and enjoy what's given by mother nature. We love doing bushcraft & survival procedures, it strengthen our mind, body & soul even though where we live there are poisonous snakes & spiders. What doesn't kill you, make you stronger and what would really kill you, makes you more aware of your surroundings. We have learned so much from watching your vids & also Mors Kochanski ( a legend's quote - The more you know, the less you carry. ). Thank you Mr. Reallybigmonkey1 & a big hug for Nick too. Cheers from Australia.

    I especially liked the reflected mesh vest idea. Great if the car breaks down and you need to be seen changing a tire.
