I cannot believe this moment was 13 years ago already. The city of New Orleans was tore apart and just a few years later was brought back to life and together again. New Orleans will always be special to me, but the Saints are my favorite thing in the world. I will never forget watching Tracy take this ball to the house and secure the trophy for the Saints. How this is only 3 will never make sense to me. This is the best and most important INT in history, you could argue we had the game won but not when Peyton Manning is on the field.
This was one of the worst plays of Manning's career. He never should have thrown that ball. Reggie Wayne: “Let me tell you something about that. We ran that play about four times that game. He (Porter) was waiting on it. He was waiting on it. He sat on it. He sat on it and he waited. He broke before I did. I didn’t help, I slipped a little bit. But he got there before I did. If I would have run the perfect route, I think he still would have got there before me.” Tracy Porter: “We went to man-to-man coverage, and the formation that the Colts came out in is one that we had been studying the majority of the week. With the inverted split end, [Austin] Collie, we knew was going to motion down and they were going to run a stick route. The point guy, Reggie Wayne, was in the slot, and he was going to try to wide the part and out-leverage the corner and cut back across his face. Once I saw Collie motion in, I was like, ‘OK, here comes the stick route,’ and once I saw him try to wide the part, I just stepped inside and when he went to make the break to come back in I was already in front of him and I picked the ball off.” Manning, the great defense-dissector and "coach on the field", never saw Porter and LOST the Super Bowl with ONE ERRANT THROW. But somehow, the guy who actually threw the pass - and who ran the offense with the ability to make whatever adjustments he thought he needed to make at the line of scrimmage - is never blamed for calling the play (or allowing the play to remain the call) and making the throw. This is why people are known as "Manning apologists".
To be fair, there was a heavy blitz coming his way; including at least one free rusher. He had to get rid of it in a hurry. Throwing it to Wayne wasn't a bad idea. Porter had shut him down for the first three quarters, but Wayne was making plays in the fourth. So there wasn't much wrong with the play call; besides the fact they ran it before that game. Porter knew it was coming and jumped the route when Manning couldn't go thru his reads, from there it was just pure speed to the endzone and a victory for the team I grew up cheering for.
This deserves to be third all time. Tracy Porter made a great play and it will forever go down as the greatest play in Saints history, but stop hating on Peyton Manning. He gets more criticism for this game then Brady does for scoring 14 points against a middle-of-the-road Giants team.
The big thing I told everyone going into this game was that the colts offense who never turns the ball over was going against the defense that had the most turnovers in the league that year, and that this game would be decided by a saints takeaway just like the NFC championship game...and I spent the whole night yelling I called it

Manning didn't really do anything wrong on this one. It's just that Porter knew what was coming and jumped the pattern, just like Malcolm Butler did against Seattle. The real problem is that in both cases, the play shouldn't have been called in the first place. Porter had already been beaten on that exact pattern several times before, so he jumped it knowing he had nothing to lose.

One thing these talking heads keep saying is PM was trying to take his team down the field to "win the game". Not accurate. Saints were up by 7 at that point. He was trying to tie it up. And if he had tied it up Drew Brees and the Saints would've had the final possession to win it. But Porter's Pick 6 put the Saints up by 14. So that Int. wrapped it all up.
Yeah, the Saints likely would've won this game anyway. They had scored on every possession in the second half, for 18 points. The onside kick was a real killer. People would've recycled the same narratives anyway, but Manning did make it easy for them even though this was the first time he'd ever thrown an INT in a playoff comeback situation.

Tracy Porter: “We went to man-to-man coverage, and the formation that the Colts came out in is one that we had been studying the majority of the week. With the inverted split end, [Austin] Collie, we knew was going to motion down and they were going to run a stick route. The point guy, Reggie Wayne, was in the slot, and he was going to try to wide the part and out-leverage the corner and cut back across his face. Once I saw Collie motion in, I was like, ‘OK, here comes the stick route,’ and once I saw him try to wide the part, I just stepped inside and when he went to make the break to come back in I was already in front of him and I picked the ball off.” Manning, the great defense-dissector and "coach on the field", never saw Porter and LOST the Super Bowl with ONE ERRANT THROW. But somehow, the guy who actually threw the pass - and who ran the offense with the ability to make whatever adjustments he thought he needed to make at the line of scrimmage - is never blamed for calling the play (or allowing the play to remain the call) and making the throw. This is why people are known as "Manning apologists".

To be fair, there was a heavy blitz coming his way; including at least one free rusher. He had to get rid of it in a hurry. Throwing it to Wayne wasn't a bad idea. Porter had shut him down for the first three quarters, but Wayne was making plays in the fourth. So there wasn't much wrong with the play call; besides the fact they ran it before that game. Porter knew it was coming and jumped the route when Manning couldn't go thru his reads, from there it was just pure speed to the endzone and a victory for the team I grew up cheering for.
I love how it starts off with Manning, takes 2 and a half minutes to give the Saints any positive mention, and then goes right back to Peyton.

As a Saints fan my whole life, born in New Orleans 1984, this play was the biggest play of my life. It was unbelievable.
This deserves to be third all time. Tracy Porter made a great play and it will forever go down as the greatest play in Saints history, but stop hating on Peyton Manning. He gets more criticism for this game then Brady does for scoring 14 points against a middle-of-the-road Giants team.

Manning didn't really do anything wrong on this one. It's just that Porter knew what was coming and jumped the pattern, just like Malcolm Butler did against Seattle. The real problem is that in both cases, the play shouldn't have been called in the first place. Porter had already been beaten on that exact pattern several times before, so he jumped it knowing he had nothing to lose.

All these professional sports analysts talking about how they thought Peyton was going drive down the field and win the game. IT WAS A 7 POINT GAME.
One thing these talking heads keep saying is PM was trying to take his team down the field to "win the game". Not accurate. Saints were up by 7 at that point. He was trying to tie it up. And if he had tied it up Drew Brees and the Saints would've had the final possession to win it. But Porter's Pick 6 put the Saints up by 14. So that Int. wrapped it all up.
Yeah, the Saints likely would've won this game anyway. They had scored on every possession in the second half, for 18 points. The onside kick was a real killer. People would've recycled the same narratives anyway, but Manning did make it easy for them even though this was the first time he'd ever thrown an INT in a playoff comeback situation.
