    I'd say you did pretty well. You have to thank VV for not charging you wifi, that's where crew spent most on unless they've become alcoholics which is often the case. I no longer work for ships today. I did enjoy it a lot and drinking less.

    I thought that was very low 😂 $190 a month isn't too bad when you think how much you would spend on land in a month.

    When it breaks down it’s like $6.28 a day for 6 months. Don’t be hard on yourself that’s like buying yourself lunch everyday on land.

  • @PotrovNivanski

    That amount for a 6 month contract isn't that much, although I think you can safe a bit on the coffee. But the alcohol isn't that much! I think you will be spending more in UK pubs ;)

    IMO you advertised for the Spa on your channel they should have given u that FREE.
    Also IMO for allllll the advertisment u gave this ship....they should have picked that tab up as a "thank you!"

    Something I had never thought about. We went on a Hawaiian cruise 7 years ago (on Norwegian). At every port, there were shuttle buses for the local K-Mart and the local Wal-Mart. One day, I happened to bump into the social director, and I asked her why shuttles, and she told me that first, the local stores like that often sell different souvenir items than the shops around the ship, and second, that is how the crew members are able to restock their supplies of stuff like laundry detergent, bleach, shampoo, deodorant, snacks, etc.
    Never occurred to me.

So we will always be following the guideline of having to be 21 when drinking alcohol. If I wanted to just go there socially would I be allowed?

    $1140 over 6 months is only $190 per month. That's not too bad. Yeah, you could eliminate the alcohol, and drink the free crew coffee. But hey, there's absolutely nothing wrong with treating yourself. I find it interesting that things are charged in US Dollars. Are you paid in dollars, and convert it to GBP? Or does it just show up as Pounds in your account. I'm curious about how it works with a multinational crew.

  • @icecoldprincess2009
    @icecoldprincess2009 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Be reasonable with yourself here. Yes, your final expenses might have been lower on previous cruises ... but, once you cater for whatever you spent in ports with your bank statements - how much were you really saving??? I'm going to stab at it not being that much different if you were to make a spreadsheet and add those purchases to the ones you made onboard the ship.
    Fair enough, you spent more at the bars and coffee shops, but you did have to isolate, too... maybe you didn't handle isolation and being on your own as well as you thought you did. You're not an introvert and you had a cabin to yourself, too - that's going to have some influence because you had to go out to socialise. You couldn't exactly have a soda and a show in your cabin with your friends.

    I mean roughly $200 a month on coffee and drinks in reality (for the average person, or American at least we'll say since I'm from the US) is not that much. I mean you figure those people that buy a Starbucks coffee for $5 a day during the work wee (so 20 days per month basically), there is $100 a month right there JUST on a coffee and doesn't even scratch the surface on what else they might pay for for eating out ,etc. Of course, I'm not sure how much your intake is in terms of income but I would imagine this in reality, compared to someone who was working a normal job and didn't quite have the perks that crew have (ie. reduced priced drinks and minimal surcharges for meals -- if any -- and essentially free coffee) is not very much when considering income to expenses. I mean most people would probably blow $200 on gas alone going to and from work, for which you probably don't have to worry about being on a cruise ship (so there's pluses and minuses to each type of lifestyle I guess). But on the bright side, you are on a cruise ship (not something that everyone gets to do) and basically get to travel for almost free (not sure how much port time you get that is "Free" time but still probably a rewarding job).
    It is nice to hear that Virgin is taking care of their staff and crew. I have heard that people (both sailors and crew) can pay $5-$6 per day for wi-fi on cruise ships which can really add up, if you think about it and is probably more than what most people would pay at home when added together (although it doesn't seem like much on a day-to-day basis).

    That's just about $200 per month, or around $40 per week. That's not very much at all, especially when you consider that's all the expenses you have. Look at it this way....if I go out for a pretty mediocre dinner and have one beer, it'll cost me $40. You made that same amount of money last an entire week. You've got to live a little and enjoy the experience. I think you did well!

    Honestly in Ireland some people just pay 1,000 euro or more just on rent per month so the fact that you spent that figure in a 6 month contract is good in my opinion! Is there anything you can do about the wifi situation on other ships ? Having no way to contact people is my biggest worry, I'm so used to checking my phone throughout the day I can't imagine not being able to :( Any tips ?

    You're being way too hard on yourself. You spent $43 a week and I would suspect, as a single woman, that you would easily spend that on entertainment (drinks, food, movies, etc) if you were living at home. If you really want to budget your money my suggestion is you decide how much you are going to put into your account on the first of each month and you have to make it last for the month. Monitor your spending and if your account is running low and it's only the middle of the month you'll need to cut back on the drinking, message or other activity until next month. Good luck!
